growalot
So this being the start of rack growing season and they haven't put on their summer weight...could you accurately conclude how old this buck will be come Oct.? Just an exercise in judging body references to age.
BizCT
2 right now, 2.5 in November Edited May 17, 2016 by Biz-R-OWorld
landtracdeerhunter
Tough call with the pose. I'll say 4 1/2 years and a 140" rack. He's going to walk right by your stand for a nice broadside shot. Hope to see you with the harvest pics.
growalot
Your right Biz and hopefully I'll get better pics..but as I see it now ...knowing the weight gains that will happen and his condition now...trying to figure out how the neck really sets to the brisket, hip and shoulder definition. I agree with you. Though I wonder what the summer weight gain will do to that opinion? Landtrac...wouldn't that be nice...with one exception...I prefer the meat not to taste like a billy goat smells! Even chili doesn't mask it...and we've gone through a lot of milk! http://www.fieldandstream.com/articles/2014/10/young-buck-vs-mature-buck-how-to-tell-the-difference

Bowguy 1
I don't think real old, his body isn't showing age. Racks btw can never be used to determine age. The face has not yet appeared to fill out, no jowls, back has not started to even remotely sway. All indicators of age. growalot
Racks btw can never be used to determine age. Sorta my point, though....... yes they can help as an indicator..for a good example click on the link I provided... it clearly demonstrates the amount of mass not points an older buck (not too old ) can put on as time goes by...even on poorer NYS soils It's good to get guys look at the body over racks so I thought it would be a good exercise
landtracdeerhunter
I was just being nice. Something this site could use a lot more of!
growalot
aaahhh, that's what I assumed.... It would be nice if this thread wasn't stalled and perhaps others posted pics now, through season ...sorta like the QDM site does. The state wants to educate hunters on mature bucks... The AR proponents want young bucks safe, so why not have some practice and discussion.... Maybe if someone other than I started a thread on the subject, it would garner interest... moog5050
Best guess 2yr old. Still rump heavy. But agree its not the best angle.
wooly
I would guess a 2.5 yo by season as well. Be nice to have a known 200" spring buck beside him for comparison but it doesn't always work out that way for us!
dbHunterNY
i'll say 2.5 or 3.5 yrs old but tough to tell during late winter and spring months at times. the angle skews things versus closer and perfectly broadsided. depends a lot on how much browse or crops carrying deer later into the season. bucks around here make big swings on some properties due to the lack of winter habitat around. we're working on that though. check out this link....https://www.qdma.com/articles/see-one-bucks-amazing-post-rut-decline-and-recovery?utm_source=Ntl+Newsletter+5%2F19%2F2016&utm_campaign=Ntl+Newsletter+5%2F19%2F16&utm_medium=email
growalot
So QDM sent me this..and I thought ...What perfect timing! This ties right in to what I was saying about it being difficult to judge due to being spring and not having summer weight and conditioning on them yet. This is a really excellent example to take a close look at... https://www.qdma.com/articles/see-one-bucks-amazing-post-rut-decline-and-recovery Edited May 20, 2016 by growalot
