landtracdeerhunter
Thinking I might be plowing soon, if the rains hold off. I did plant a few early potatoes in on the sandy flats. Hope to get in an acre of pumpkins and squash, in June for the deer. I have a flat on the front of one of my tractors; only a 13.6 x 28 though. Pump calcium, retube and good to go. landtracdeerhunter
Im in a potato growing contest with my neighbors. I welcome your mockery, laughter, but also any tips you may have Potatoes like soils around 5.5 ph.. Five hundred pounds of 10-20-20 to the acre min.. If you want a giant, hollow free verity; try Kennebec, in the white rounds Long french fries, LOL. Chippawa makes a great tasting potato. Looking for red rounds; try Norland or Pontiac. Watch your damp cool nights; as grow said, blight is your enemy. Dam weeds also. Last on my like too do list. Well drained ground is a must. One wet year, we grew potatoes on top of the ground under mulching hay. One last thing, avoid manure; causes scab on the skin. Good luck and happy spuds! Do you plan on harvesting it for sale?...I ask because I do not understand guys paying those prices for field corn just for deer....When 8.00 feed corn is just as good... It is my first time planting field corn, i was not under the impression that the seed was the same as feed corn. lol. kinda bummed because i could have saved the money and went to the local feed shop. but i paid 42$ for 25# they did give me an extra 5# with my purchase which was nice.. we learn from our mistakes, or trial and error i should say. I planted the screen last night, an 8-10" path around the outside edge of my soybean plot.. i till it up several times in the last a couple weeks so the dirt was perfect, i broadcast the seed just a tad on the heavy side, and adjusted my tiller to 2" depth and skimmed the top of soil to put the seed in around 2" deep as they suggested 1.5-2" and no less than 1".. see how it comes out, got a good hour long down pour immediately after planting. should be good. The majority of the seed was under the soil.. Next year ill purchase feed corn to plant knowing this lol..

This is a one pot deal, we were all issued a potato a few weeks ago. I cut it into three pieces with eyes on them and planted them in a bin in about 6" of Miracle Grow potting mix. Hopefully it will work but if not a still get to drink beer at the reveal/judging party.

LET EM GROW
Planted a big patch of sweet corn Saturday, about 500 Stalks in case some fail... lol Cant wait to see how it turns out, First time trying it..
growalot
Was it sugar enhanced and did you separate it far from the field corn? Corn is wind pollinated. If you plant different breeds of corn in your garden, the resulting crop will be undesirable. Sweet corn, popcorn, field corn, and the new super and sugar enhanced varieties all will cross pollinate. If you plant them too close, you will end up with starchy, very un-sweet corn. http://www.gardensmart.tv/?p=articles&title=Growing_Sweet_Corn
LET EM GROW
One plot might be starchy and un sweetened corn then lol.. planted it along the edge of the field corn in one spot. ill try it but i used it more for a screen as well and to test winter hardiness and deer preference for future sites.. and of course if anything is left ill taste it lol The other plot is a few hundred yards from here... ill look for better more desirable results for my taste buds there
growalot
I still may be OK if you have an early season sweet corn and a long season field....they may tassel out at different times.
tater
alright we've got some action! What are you judging for on your potatoes? Yield, biggest, appearance? What variety? Feed them nitrogen up until the blossom's fall off them, after that they like potassium. Trust me speaking from lots of experience.
