New York Bill Would Require Gun Registration

Recommended Posts

From the US Sportsman's Alliance    New York Bill Would Require Gun Registration  2/17/11

A bill in New York would require all gun owners to register their firearms and pay yearly gun ownership fees.

Senate Bill 2994, introduced by Senator Eric Adams (D- Brooklyn), requires gun owners to register each firearm currently owned with their local county clerk’s office or local precinct station.  The bill also requires that any firearms acquired in the future also be registered with the state, including such information as to where and how the gun was acquired.

Take Action!  New York sportsmen should contact their state senator and urge them to oppose Senate Bill 2994.  To find your state senator’s contact information, please visit www.ussportsmen.org/LAC.

Under the measure, gun owners would be required to provide the serial number of each firearm owned, in addition to their name, address, phone number, and the location where the firearm will be located when not in use.

The bill also calls for a fee of $15 for each initial gun registration.  In addition, gun owners would face a $10 per year renewal fee for each gun owned.

“Not only is this bill an attack on gun ownership rights, it’s a blatant tax on gun ownership,” said Jeremy Rine, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance associate director of state services.  “It’s outrageous that the state would try to make citizens register their guns and then make money off of this process.”

They're awake, but many of them are in denial.

Registration is the first step towards confiscation.

That's a saying I've been hearing for decades and if you don't think it's true you are wrong.

The first place I heard it was Pensacola, Fl in 1979.  A good friend of mine is a retired Lt. Col USMC living there and was told he needed to register his sidearm when he moved there.

Upon visiting the local PD to look into it, he was actually told that phrase, twice, by the Chief of Police.  The Chief was actually trying to warn him not to do it.  He didn't do it, and the Chief bid him a good day.

I think I need a new bumper sticker:

Molōn labe!

per wikipedia.org - The Greek phrase Molōn labe! (Μολὼν λαβέ; approximate Ancient Greek pronunciation [molɔ̀ːn labé], Modern Greek [moˈlon laˈve]), meaning "Come and take them" is a classical expression of defiance reportedly by King Leonidas I in response to the Persian army's demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons at the Battle of Thermopylae. It corresponds roughly to the modern equivalent English phrase "over my dead body", "bring it on" or, most closely, "come and get it".  It is an exemplary use of a laconic phrase.

I get a kick out of the "we need more gun laws" guys on here that don't show up on the thread where they can actually see how we're being attacked as gun owners... their heads really are in the sand.

A bill is a lot different than a law.

There are many ridiculous bills floated every year that do not have any realistic chance of becoming law.  It is how politicians pander to their constituency.

Anti-hunting bills are one example.  Crossbow bills are another.

And gun control bills fit the same mold.

Should we remain vigilant?  Absolutely.

Is it realistic to state that just because a bill is floated that it is a dire threat to our guns? Absolutely not.

I believe it is a dire threat when an elected official has so little regard for the Constitution , he swore to uphold, would even author such a bill. It speaks to the mentality of those holding those positions. THey should start taking the gun posession of criminals more seriously and quit focusing on the law abiding owners.

This is not to say that calls shouldn't be made, but that every year the assembly members propose anti-gun bills which ar passed, but never make it thru a committee in the senate. I wold concentate my calls  in the senate, not the Assembly, but it's always nice to tie up the lines of anti-gun assembly people like Eric Adams, and Amy Paulin.

Really?  A "dire threat?"

Stupid bills are put forth by the dozens, every year.

Ever hear the parable about the boy who cried wolf?

Yes I have heard it, but I think all of these politicians need to understand people are watching them...and I don't mean on just gun legislation. They are our rep's and if they are not doing what we want...I belive it is our duty to let them know.

It is important to understand the only reason these bills are not passed into law is because they know how many votes they will lose if it does.

The point being, if we do not make our voices heard each and every time one of these anti-gun or anti-hunting bills is proposed, they will begin to actually pass into law.

If you sit on the sidelines smugly assuming they will never pass, you are going to be very upset when one of them does.  No bill should ever be ignored, no matter how sure you are they're just stupid.  These are legislative trail balloons floated to see if anyone complains, not so much to pander to constituents.

A bill is only different from a law in the fact that it can be killed, where as a law is hard to reverse.

They are both.

It is no different than the Republican house passing a bill to repeal Health Care, even though they knew it would die in Senate.  It was more important to show their constituency that they are serious about cutting spending than to actually repeal the Health Care law.

The lefties from downstate know where their bread is buttered, and they must appear to be promoting their constituents' agenda...even if it is unrealistic to expect it to gain any traction.

It is political posturing.

I do not think it makes us look particularly strong when gun owners overreact to every little piece of legislation that it is submitted.  Especially when you are preaching to the choir....

You hit it on the head. If your not involved then don't complain when one of these bills passes. Not voicing your opinion is the same as not having one. You think its a pain fighting these things now then wait till one is on the books.

Took the words right out of my mouth guys.... this is the part that guys like arrowflinger and virgil aren't understanding... the noise we have made over the years is the reason why these bills die early and don't make their way to become law... that may not be true if we were to discontinue the fight
