Waterfowl Shotgun Recommendations

Hello - 

I'm in the market for a shotgun geared towards waterfowl hunting. I am new to hunting and female, so I don't want a macho gun that'll give me such kickback that I'll fly backwards upon firing or spend too much $, my budget is $500 tops and I'm guessing I need a 20 gauge. I was considering a Remington 870 (the low end model) or even a Benelli Nova. I read that for duck hunting in LI or NYS whatever, the gun can not have more than 3 rounds in it, I'm not sure how or if that impacts what kind of gun I need to get. Also what kind of action is best? 

Any and all model recommendations are welcomed. Thanks for your help.

P.S. If anyone knows of a good gun store in Manhattan (yeah I know), or LI let me know. Aside from looking for a gun, I need to know where to buy one!

A 12 gauge will better suit ur waterfowl hunting desire, but will kick more. Especially if u get some heavy waterfowl rounds in a 870. I would highly recommend a semiautomatic due to less recoil.

I have to agree with this. The 12ga in semi will have no more recoil then a 20ga pump. Less actually IMO. It's also easier for follow up shots as wing shooting is pretty hard at first. Seeing you are a female will a standard gun fit or are you small framed and need a shorter stock?

We can all offer suggestions and advice, but in the end, get what fits you and your wallet.

I totally meant to say 12 and not 20! I like pump actions rather than semi's, almost feel like driving manual vs automatic, u have more control of the "machine."

I'm not sure if I need a smaller stock I'm 5'6, 5'7 between 125-130. I think I'd prob be okay with standard.

agree to this but semi auto may/probably take her out of the price she'd like too. If you're a smaller lady in stature maybe look into a youth model . Added a Sims shock relief to my daughters 20 gauge youth and it reduced turkey load/deer slug shooting a lot

Good point about the price, should have added a decent used semi.

I just sighted in my 870 with slugs yesterday, I will say I would never want to shoot a box of shells at ducks with that thing. Maybe I'm a wussie I guess. I would definitely check out a used gun rack for a semi auto.
