So what will the DEC do now!???

Recommended Posts

Here's the regulations in simple terms... water is never mentioned. I provide watering tanks all over our place where there is no natural water.  Have for years many are right out in plain sight of the road so I'm not hiding it. No regulations that I have ever known on watering holes or tubs...I have mentioned them many times.

Now they have this liquid deer minerals specifically for watering tank. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and was going to make this post but ,life happened...Now I can't find where I saw the darn thing..but it's out there... I'm not sure how healthy such an additive would be, could it cause the water to go rancid? How could the DEC keep up with managing that? It's not on the ground it's not over food. I have never seen where they list water as food....not thinking I'd want to risk tainting the tanks...I have enough going on cleaning  when there is an algae bloom in hot weather. and managing skeeters... So what are your thoughts on it....

Q: What types of attractants are legal for deer hunting?
A: You may use cover scents and lures, such as doe urine, for deer hunting. However, it is illegal to place a salt block or mineral lick on lands inhabited by deer at any time of year. It is also illegal to feed deer. Some attractants that are marketed for deer are liquids or dissolving powders which deer may not directly consume, but the attractants may entice deer to feed on the material which absorbed the attractant. These types of produces would not be legal.

This is copy and paste out of page 18 of the 2016-2017 Hunting Regulations... So the way I read it, as long as that liquid mineral doesn't have any salt in it you should be fine.

Manner of Taking
You may use decoys, calls and attractant scents
to hunt big game. It is unlawful to:
• Take big game while the deer or bear is in
water
• Possess a firearm of any description when
bowhunting or accompanying a person bowhunting
during special bowhunting seasons
• Make, set or use salt licks or other attractants,
whether block, liquid or powder that contains
ANY amount of salt, upon lands inhabited by
deer or bear at any time of year

The only word of caution I have is that the regulations are NOT all inclusive. They are what they feel is pertinent. The full text, ENCON law sections may expand on this more.

Aahhh well they did address it...Anyone know if that was the rewrite they did after the whole law suit on deer feeding ,or has it always been that way? I would think something like that would or could cause the water to go rancid...or the minerals or what ever they use to go bad in summer heat...Wish I could find that page again it was ad or something attached to a video I was watching I think..I'd never heard of it before..

Well because there is no need to...I spend plenty on food plots fertilizer and micro minerals for the soil ...I will let the locals and not so locals around me continue to put out their "blocks, and spray their donkey what ever all over their trees and brush Those deer will still be walking over to me for their turnips and salads..and clear clean drinking water...

Yep... You are right.

Going off track a little from the original question but... If I look at the part about it being illegal to shoot a deer while it is in water... Does that mean a deer standing in a swamp is off limits?

Come to think of it... . Maybe that's why all the biggest bucks are always hiding in swamps.

Seems like you do more for your property than most to benefit wildlife. You have developed a good property. I say, don't mess with it.
