G-Man
Anyone out there digging leeks? Any good recipies?
nyantler
I have dug them every May during turkey season for many many years.. they make a great french onion (leek) soup... just replace the onions with leeks. I like to eat them raw with a little salt just like a radish. The leaves actually taste great in a salad
MuzzyLoader
LOVE LEEKS... Put 'em mashed potatoes, soups, anywhere you'd put an onion.

G-Man
they are a type of wild onion, right now they are strong! by may they are all leaved out and get a small bulb like an onion and are much milder.
catskillkid
I tend to find them on a north facing slope in wet areas

nyantler
a good tip is to make sure you always leave some where you pick and they will multipy each year... and a 2 acre patch must smell very strong as you get close to the patch!
G-Man
you should sit in the middle of it turkey hunting! its also within 70 yards of a good roost area..

YUP... use to go every year with our son, but I only go once in awhile now to dig some up. Drove by an area today with my nephew, where I've dug them before and commented on how great they taste, because of this thread. Hey G... How about I drive over to Cuba and help you harvest some? I'll drop my wife off at the Cheese Factory and let her spend a couple of hours. LOL.

growalot
Ahh leek and potato soup....leek greens instead of lettuce on sandwiches....leek and scrambled eggs....... sauteed leeks and deer chops...... I always dig a bunch extra and blanch then freeze them for winter it will be a while before we can dig any...10" of snow due to arrive tomorrow...Oh well they aren't going any where
catskillkid
nyantler, I do not think you are looking at leeks. Leeks look more like a scallion or green onions. Look on the north facing slopes in wet terrain.
G-Man
catskilled, joes pic is of wild leeks in full leaf, if yours look like a green onion you have wild onion or someone use to have commercial leeks growing there.
growalot
Well that pic is what the leeks we've been eating for 40+ years looks like...Now wild onion looks like a skinny version of bunching onions or garlic...
