airedale
Hunting with that double side by side he was more than likely using Buckshot. I remember old timers speaking of using Buckshot and shooting the Deer at fairly close range like you would a rabbit, I bet a lot of deer were wounded back then. Grouse
When I first started hunting in 1970, NJ only allowed buckshot for deer. Slugs weren't even legal.

Grouse
Piper Cub / Super Cub with coyotes hanging from the wings! Aerial hunting in the 1950s... and it's still done today in areas of high coyote density on livestock ranches in the upper Great Plains south into Texas.

Grouse
A few years back a bear about that size was taken in Northern NJ of all places. It was a state record and was done in a full body mount that now resides at the NJ F&G Hackettstown Outdoor Museum near the Del Water Gap.
