biggamefish
If you wanted to create a bedding area on a ridge. Say the ridge is lower than the surrounding area but still a pretty good ridge. Would you want the bedding area to be on the prevailing wind side (still out if the main wind) or the calm side.

Just over the top, and down a little ways on the calm side. Some hinge cuts would work perfectly. That way, with a prevailing wind at their backs, the deer will smell danger from the top, and can see it from below. And also be out of the worst of the cold NW prevailing wind in our area. If you need any help Matt, let me know.
Five Seasons
as an add on to your question, sometimes bucks will do the opposite so they can post up and scent check during the rut. I know that's not what you asked, but i feel it's worth noting.
dbHunterNY
it's best to cautiously enhance locations already used for bedding. deer are finicky though and each one has a different preference. best to give deer multiple options (view from different directions and for different winds). also doe family groups and bucks don't want to be together during different times of the year. another huge mistake myself and others have made is thinking it needs to have overhead hinged canopy and be thick. if deer think they're too constricted without multiple escape routes they won't use it. on a slope you know deer will bed pointing perpendicular to the slope though. Nevery seen a deer bed perpendicular to a slope always seen them parallel or slight up or down.

Five Seasons
5 minutes ago, biggamefish said: Nevery seen a deer bed perpendicular to a slope always seen them parallel or slight up or down. just this past sunday I believe we had a west/sw wind sunday morning in 8f. Had a nice 2.5 year old 8 come in and bed down about 40 yards in front of me near the top of a raised area (I wouldn't call it a ridge) but it was certainly high ground in the area. The wind was blowing into the slope and into his face. He relaxed there for about 20 minutes, occasionally lifting his nose to scent check. If anything came from behind him, he was screwed. We have had pretty good rut action around this time and there was no doubt in my mind that he was using this spot as a good scouting area for doe. so idk... when people say play the wind, I think it's important to play it both ways. that's all. rachunter
Moog5050 got me hooked on these videos. They talk about natural buck bedding areas. I can say five out of five times I look where they where supposed to be they where there. When I first came on this site a woman post a detailed video on how to make bedding areas on your property. It was in the land management forum. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
