Dave - WX2CIB
Folks, What's the best way to carry your fly rod while hiking/backpacking? Unfortunately my fly rod is about 3" too long to pack inside my pack. Sent from my SM-N960U using Tapatalk
Dinsdale
I strap a tube outside my pack. I make the tube out of PVC that is used for central vacuum systems, its light weight (thin wall) but very durable. I have used it for rods as carry on for flights too. I glue one end, and the friction fit is good and I use a wide elastic band to secure the other. Hardly ever use the rod tubes that come with them now, too heavy.

grampy
This is 28 inches. I just bunji it to my pack, or put it inside. Works great.
left field
You can grab a cheap tube in a lot of places. But as they others say, carry it strapped to the outside. Many packs have a water bottle holder at the sides and that holds the end of a tube well.

virgil
If you're going to be doing a lot of this, a pack rod is great. I have a seven foot Orvis 5 weight that is, I think, six pieces and packs down to about 18" and came in a great lightweight tube.

Nytracker
I keep a cabelas stowaway for such instances it's a 6 piece and comes with a tube. Fits nice in a day pack . I would imagine for me to break a rod in the tube inside my daypack I've got bigger problems.
Salmon_Run
I have the four piece rods for packing and use a light weigth homemade plastic tube on my day pack to safely get them where I'm going. I some times carry my frame pack for better protection depending on where I am wandering about...... I don't carry my St.Croix rods for "off trail" fly fishing.....
