I gotta congratulate you again on that beautiful buck! 
You really are doing a great job with the euro!! Slow and steady is the way to go. And it will be a fine mount to show off that buck, and a great reminder of that hunt too!
Here is one I did two or three years ago. I picked the board from the old original homestead on the farm, built in the early 1800s. Used 7mm-08 cases, one of which killed the buck. And some dried grasses, from the property, dried by my hunting partners wife.
I made a rough outline of the bottom on a piece of cardboard. Flipped it over and made a reverse pattern on top, that I cut with a jigsaw, and rough sanded.
A rustic look is what I wanted. Came out OK I think. I may do something similar with this years buck, to go on the other side of the wall?

Ok so here is the update on mine from the original post. Between catching the flu, then holidays hitting, I haven't had much time to work on it. It also doesn't help that my puppy got a hold of it and chewed the nose off. I ended up taking it to a guy yesterday. He's going to finish the cleaning for he and see if he can fix up the nose.

Finally got around to sticking him on some “cleaned up” pallet wood...pretty happy although I think I would have preferred to either move him higher or make the pallet wood a bit longer.

How about hitting the edges with a propane torch?  Maybe even let the edges burn a little and then douse it.

I think you did a great job, and it looks awesome just the way it is! Congrats again on a beauty of a buck!

If you wanted a more weathered look, thats easy! Just fill up a wheelbarrow or a large container with red or black mulch,  garden dirt, and some water,  let it soak for a couple days. The dye from the mulch, and the soil will slightly "stain" the wood as it soaks in. After soaking a couple days, take out and let it air dry for a couple days. Also before putting it in there, round off the hard edges with some 60 grit sandpaper to rough it up a bit.
