Hunting “in” season

Put this in the hunting thread because it’s not hypothetical...

Let’s see what you put on the table or in the freezer this year and tell us what IN season animals (fish too) you plan to harvest and how in the upcoming weeks (Turkey and Trout time coming up)

 

Im gonna try to get to a couple early (May) horny toms and then focus on bluegills and perch in the shallows and off the points and trout out of some 9-mile honey holes

I cheated and skinned them!

I know I blew it but I was under the gun fir a Christmas feast and had a house full of company (so I was drinking)

The third one down is much different in color and has a dark black bill

I didnt remember that you got a band too! Sweet.I'll get roasted by more experienced duck hunters but that third duck might be a pintail hen

Plenty of venison. Some moose for my cousin's Maine hunt.  Salmon and trout from Maine ice fishing trip. 

Several briskets ranging from 5- 20lbs. Pork buts, ribs, and other goodies for the smoker.

That reminds me... I have some ground moose from a buddy.  Whats the best way to cook it to taste the difference?

If I make Bullwinkle burgers will it taste just like venison?

Youre a lucky man, moose is the best venison by far IMHO

Same comment I have heard from every hunter that has tasted moose.  I heard its very similar to beef.  True?

Yes Hen Pintail but if hunting alone your over your mallard bag limit .

I’ve had moose twice and loved it both times . Would take it over deer

Thanks I knew something was up with the black features 

it was over 2 days (3 hunts) I believe documented in the live from the woods thread ha

the first drake I finished with my paddle from my paddle board in 2’ers at 10* and 7am in the middle of the lake...picked calmer times fir the other harvests ha

had a possum in the live trap this weekend but......not quite close enough to the apocalypse that he looked tasty in the least. 

Still have some turkey, venison, trout and a good batch of walleye fillets.  And i plan to restock on all of them!

Those ducks look great. It takes time to prepare a full bird instead of just breasting them. I have only done full birds a handful of times.

That’s a black duck not a hen mallard nice !!!!

Also you paddle on that board out to retrieve? How deep in that water?

The first time was not well thought out (first bird down he was probably too far to begin with) and when the first wave came over the board I instantly realized gortex gloves mattered not (my kryptec bibs did keep me dry but with ice on them within a minute)

By the time I git the 1/4 Mile out to finish him I was over 75 feet of water 

The rest I called in close and 2/3 washed ashore in less than a minute...the other I did some ice breaking with the PB to recover about 20 yards offshore on a still (but frigid) day

Pretty much, yes. I get it from a friend hes gone a few years in a row and scored

So good and I was bummed I started with a breast-out because the legs/thighs were the best

I’m sure you’ve heard this before but be careful. Using a paddle board in water temps like that going far out you’ll never make it back if you go down.

Yeah I won’t be doing that again...

I have fished pretty cool conditions in March and April off the PB but I’ve been better prepared then I was for that first drake...I’ll never forget it that’s fir sure
