Dom
I know most of the hunters here use rifle's. How ever in my area it is shot gun only for biggame is there any one that uses a 16 guage other than myself. And if so how do you like it.I have a mossburg that is bolt action with out scope been useing since i started deer hunting and still holds a group of slugs less than a nickle apart at 100yrds.Not to bad for old gun. RangerClay
Until we went to rifles, all I ever used was Remington 1100 16 ga. That gun loved the Brenneke slugs. I miss using that old gun.
Culvercreek hunt club
I have an old Remington 1148 in 16ga. it has a poly choke on it and even though it has a setting for slugs it is hard to hit the broad side of the barn if you are standing inside of it...lol. great small game gun though. Red
12 gauge mossberg 500 i love that gun but i bought a stoger 2000 a few months ago i wanted to try a semi auto shot gun since 99% of my shot gun season is deer drives.

Doewhacker
Never used anything but the 12 gage 870 or Moss 500, my uncle used a Browning Sweet 16 for ever untill he missed the biggest buck of his life. Then he went to a Remington 1100 and quit hunting shortly after. He did kill alot of deer with his 16.
Culvercreek hunt club
I know they say you can't use one for deer hunting and to be honest I have never been a fan of the 20 ga for deer (just my personal opinion and observations). BUT....the actually have better ballistics and knock down power than a .41 magnum pistol round and you can use one of them for deer. Some of the laws in NY just don't make sense. I can't use my 30-30 in areas of shotgun hunting but can take out a pistol chambered in .30-30, .30-06 or bigger. I have a mosberg .410. it is a bolt action and was the second gun I was given to small game hunt with (after I proved myself on a single shot 12ga...36" barrel and full choke...that was an eye opener for a yourgster...lol) That .410 does throw a crazy accurate slug. Dom
The 410 is considered a shotgun/rifle if shooting shot its a shotgun if shooting slugs then its a rifle. So can we use them where rifle hunting is allowed ?Any one got info on this. Doewhacker
buy it form him....those sweet 16's are very nice guns I wish I could get it, its one of the old ones that are worth a pretty penny. Unfortunately his son will get it some day.. I would love to have it for bird hunting and cause it was his.
Doewhacker
Its WEIRD THE GUN LAWS OF NEW YORK NEED TO BE UPDATED. ALOT of laws need to be updated, like the no parking on the side of the road after Nov 1st one we have up here. Tell me that ain't to keep hunters from parking and going in hunting. Is that a question or a statement someone made to you? The .410 is ALWAYS considered a shotgun because of the shell construction. I have heard "tales" of guys shooting .41 amgs out of old single shot .410 shotguns but I wouldn't recomment it.
Culvercreek hunt club
off the EC website Shotgun - is a firearm with a barrel length of at least 18 inches that uses shells that are nonmetallic except for the base.
tughillhunter
where rifle hunting is allowed, you can use any centerfire, rather its a shotgun or a rifle.
Culvercreek hunt club
They do the same thing is areas that have road/bridge access to salmon and trout streams during the runs....kinda gets old feeling like the redheaded stepchild of the state

NO true...shot gun needs to be 20 ga or larger...no .410...no 28's
WNYBuckHunter
I have a 20 ga Mossy 500 that has dropped a lot of deer in its day. Only reason I gave it up was the crappy scope mount. I also have a 12 ga Remington 870 (deer gun) and a 12 ga Charles Daly semi auto. One of these days Id like to pick up a 16 just to play around with. BizCT
12 ga. Browning BPS Pump Action Shotgun with Leupold scope. 3 out of the 4 bucks I have taken with it, dropped right in their tracks. Shots were 40-80 yards.

Culvercreek hunt club
They sell buck shot and you can't sue them for deer in NY. I bet it is allowed in other states and I would have to look at the regs but you might be able to use them on yotes......would make a darn fine yote round.....and personal defense.....The Judge is chambered for it

Pygmy
My first two shotguns were 16 gauge..The first one was an Eastern Arms single barrel and the second one was a Rem 11-48 auto with a 28 inch modified barrel. Both guns grouped slugs acceptably with the bead sight, and killed a number of deer. I currently own only one 16 gauge, a 1936 vintage Winchester Model 12. Never shot a slug through it. It is full choke, so chances are it would not group slugs well, but you never know. I have seen a few full choke guns that grouped slugs well, but they are the exception. Generally in smoothbores, open chokes group better than tighter chokes. An old aquaintance of mine, long since dead, had a Model 12 16 gauge with a modified barrel and a reciever sight. He always claimed that his gun would blow a hole in a hummingbird as big as your fist at 50 yards...
