Woods around me are devastated. Any thoughts on acorn production? I'm not hopeful.

Even if an oak gets defoliated, there’s a good chance it’ll push more leaves out later this summer. I’m not sure how it’ll affect acorns this year, but the consensus is that next year acorn production will be way down.

Yeah they'll put energy into new leaf growth rather than acorns this year as well I'm sure

  • 2 weeks later...

I went last week and saw a bunch of dead gypsy moth caterpillars on our oak trees, facing head down on the trunk. Didn't look like they were pupating, but actually dead. Did a little bit of googling and I think this fungus hit them:

Seems like the rain we finally got last week sparked the fungus and hopefully took a large portion of them out.
