NY Region 3 Trapper
This tree (shrub) is taking over a field. I'm trying to figure out what is called. It's thick which isn't necessarily bad for wildlife but I would like to control it a bit.
Doc
I can't see close enough to tell whether these have thorns on them or not. But from the general shape and color of them I would say it is something we call thornapple (hawthorne I believe). If that's what it is they should have thorns on them that are about 1 to 2 inches long and sharp as needles.

Just removed about a half acre or so for a food plot. The thorns are a nightmare!!!
cbx46
I've actually heard of that being a food source. And that even with the thorns the deer will navigation it.
phade
Bedding central...I have a 7 acre parcel I hunt that has about 3-4 acres of that in the center...It is UNREAL how it can hold deer. They are nasty to naviage from a human perspective....deer pay no mind.
Grouse
Grouse love those thornapples too!
WNYBuckHunter
Yep, prime bedding and sanctuary area. I wouldnt get rid of it all. In fact, Id leave a few acres of it and stay out unless you are tracking a hit deer, and even then, dont take a bunch of guys in.
G-Man
Looks like hawthorn esp if has thorns, control it a little if you need acess to area, fruit is great for turkey, grouse, deer, and bear, and a bunch of other small game!! If no thorns may be one of several kinds of dogwood, will have either white or bluish purple berries with large pit. again can be food source but cut them down if need be.
