The green glowing snake

Ran across this taking a walk on the power line.Never saw one so green and looked as if it was glowing.

We used to have a ton of them here but most I see now are run over by cars. Makes me want to spend some time playing in the culverts to see if I can pick a few out!

WTH??? What kind of snake is that? Might be better if they were all that color, so they wouldn't blend in so well and scare the crap outta me (and scream like a little girl) when I almost step on them!

The more common name used around here is the Grass Snake.

Right after high school, I spent a year working at the Bronx Zoo in the herpatology (reptiles and amphibians) department before going to college. Snake are the most misunderstood animals out there. They get a bad rap for the poisonous species when in fact, in NY state, the only poisonous snake is the Copperhead and the their venom only causes intense pain. It isn't lethal. Most snake are docile. We use to have to kill the mice before we fed them to the snakes because if the snake isn't hungry, it would leave the mice along and the mice in turn, would bite the snakes and wouldn't fight back. These were wild caught snakes, not snake raised in captivity.

A side note since many of us hunters are also conservationist. A zoo has thousands of animals but the public sees less than 10% of them. For example. When I was there, we were breeding Chinese Alligators. We had 2 on display. In the back, we had 190 of them that we had bred. Those 190 had minimal human contact because the goal was to release them back into their natural habitat. Sadly, not many people know about this and all people think about zoos is that they just lock animals up for human entertainment. Our big breeding projects during my time there were the Chinese Alligators as I mentioned, Cuban Crocodiles, Spitting Cobras, and the Mata Mata.

Don't forget the Eastern Massasauga and the Timber Rattler. They are here too and very poisonous.

i have never seen a snake as green as this . they are in new york? . i use to catch the black snakes and the pilots when i was young for the neighbor he sold them somewhere . he gave us a pillowcase and we would go find 10 or more along the railroad tracks and bring them back . but i have never ran into one of these .

We have timber rattlers here in the Castkills also when they were logging my property they brought back one 3' long.

The one link says that adults are from 10-20". The one in the pic sure looks a lot longer than 20"! Then again, they all look big to me!

See them all the time here. Epsecially when mowing the lawn. They love that grass.

It was every bit of 20" ,,,but I wasnt about to stress the snake out by messing with it to measure it. The wife and I were happy to see such a colorful snake.The pics do nothing for it.The color was simply amazing with the sun shining so bright. We have " grass snakes" at home but nothing like the color of this snake.It was really cool to see something with the color it had.It equalled the glow in the dark alluma sticks kids run around with.
