Gonna get cold for the first time this weekend, with snow 4+ inches in the hill towns predicted tomorrow night, mixed precip during the day. All of a sudden I feel so sick........ No I definitely can't come in to work tomorrow, or Friday. The weather for this weekend has me all antsy in my pantsy, and with the chase hopefully ramping up, let's hope it's a good weekend! I have a Droid X, its a great phone, just blows through battery like nobody's business. Died on me last Saturday from taking pics and uploading in the stand.

You really have to lay off fawns. I most hunting situations it would be impossible to tell if it were a button buck. short of having it nearly below you and seeing the buttons....or being in a pit blind and seeing...seeing...well you get the point...lol

This thread is a perfect example of why hunters have the problems we do. A 16 yr. old kid holding out on his first buck? He's already stated that the buck is his target. That statement right there should have halted any input to let it walk. At 16, the goal should be bloodshed within legal limits. You are honing your skills on the process of hunting, shooting, and the whole act. It's the "practice makes perfect" situation. Once you get comfortable with it, then the next stage begins. OP - is the area large tract woods? flat? hilly? ag land? This type of info can help figure out potential patterns and sets. I think he's a fine trophy for you.

IMO, not an accident, but an act of pure, outright, unsafe stupidity. Right from the article... "saw what he thought was a deer and fired his rifle" How many times have you heard that when it comes to hunting "accidents"? I hear it multiple times per year. Unless the guy that got shot was wearing a deer costume and crawling on all 4's, there is no possible way that you could mistake a person for a deer if you are safely and correctly identifying your target before you shoot. You should not be shooting at movement, color, noise or anything other than a damn deer. Stories like this get my blood boiling because they are called "accidents". Nobody gets shot by accident, every shooting is either intentional or a result of unsafe gun handling.

Yes, I too have seen some freak reactions (or non-reactions) of deer to gunfire. That doesn't mean that someone blasting away is exactly putting the deer at ease. Whether the deer will ignore the gunshots or not most likely depends on the individual deer. I certainly wouldn't expect a seasoned old buck who has gone through a few gun seasons to ignore anything like that. My thought is that if a club has rules and makes them known to all members, then the thing to do is to abide by those rules or get out. That guy was definitely out of line.

There's an argument to be made for owning or not owning. For me, i got tired of never having definite plans each year- always having to ask to jump in with friends; and always being given the crappiest stand. The upfront cost is definitely a factor. But, even if the land value doesn't appreciate, when and if you sell, you'll probably at least get your initial investment back- and your only expense will have been the taxes. My taxes on 20acres is about what Steve is paying each year. For now, i love knowing that every year i don't have to depend on anyone for a place to hunt. i get to learn my land, hang stands where i want, and hunt as much as i choose. maybe i'd feel differently if i had steve's setup.
