For what its worth im excited. I have a farm in 4G and we've been letting the small bucks walk for about 5 years now. Very frustrating to see a 4 pointer you've been passing all archery season hanging in front of your neighbors barn...2 points

How bout we market some of these great ideas..... new posted signs.... instead of " posted " which is kind of stupid anyways... " live mine field, stay out " or " caution, property over taken by poison ivy " or " land has aids, if your going to tresspass wear protection " or " owner is blind and shoots at anything he hears " or " trespassing will lead to immediate removal and a million dollar fine " or " beware of dog, especially the ones we trained to fight " or "beware of da Bubba, Bubba hungry - he eat human " or " tresspass and you legally agree to marry my wife " or " watch out for exploding cow crap " or " we just fed the kids some bath salts.... enter at your own risk "2 points

I think the beauty of a youth hunt would be that dad (or mom) is 100% dedicated to the kid for the hunt. And not distracted by them missing a day, passing on a deer, regular opening day camp plans with other, or whatever the case may be. If it means that it will get more kids in the woods I'm all for it.2 points

I'm very excited to see this happen. We have been trying to only shoot bucks with 8 points or better on the farm that i hunt for a few years now but it wasn't working b/c the farm right down the road boards hunters and shoots any legal buck they see. All bow season long we would pass up spikes-six point bucks and then come opening day they would be hanging down the road. Now they will be able to survive and make it though the brutal NY gun season. Now if New York state added a one buck rule we would really be in great shape!!! John1 point

I dont see how it would be anymore dangerous, its not like the kids would be out by themselves, there would have had to have been an adult right there with them. Also, as far as how it was when many of us were kids, times have changed, and kids these days have alot more distractions. The recruitment and license sales numbers dont lie, hunter numbers are falling off a cliff. If something isnt done, we are no longer going to have enough of a voice to keep our sport going. I feel the need to not be shortsighted on the subject of the future of our sport. I do not feel that the youth season would be a cure all, but I dont see it as hurting either. I believe it would be a good piece of the puzzle to add in, as other states have done, successfully. I also do not see a youth weekend as any kind of dumbing down. Its just an opportunity to get out there during a time of the year that typically has a bit better weather, and slightly more patternable deer. Its no guarantee that they will kill or even see anything. I see the exclusion of the youth weekend as another set back. Just my 2 cents.1 point

I agree with you, Culver...I often wondered if the stream fish are stronger because they have to work harder fighting the current.. The stream bass ( at least in the waters I fish) are lankier and slimmer than thier lake counterparts..An 18 inch fish from my local river might weigh 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 lb., where an 18 incher from say, Keuka Lake usually goes 3 pounds PLUS.. They all fight like demons, but I believe as you do that the stream fish have an edge, pound for pound... The stream bass even seem to TASTE better, in my opinion. Perhaps that is because they don't eat as many oily forage fish, like alewives, a diet that might make the lake bass taste a little stronger. I prefer light tackle for smallies..My favorite rig is a 6 1/2 foot light action Fenwick with 6 lb. test mono.. Even a 10 or 12 incher gives a good account of itself on that tackle, and when you hook a 3 or 4 pounder, you REALLY have your hands full for a few minutes..1 point

So the Youth Waterfowl hunts and Youth Turkey hunts are a bad idea or just Youth Deer hunts?1 point

I think the Youth Hunt would be more of the "dumbing down of America" ...... a kid needs an edge because he might not get a deer when Daddy hunts . Kids can not get 70's on their tests so they lower the passing score . Kids cry when they lose a game so they make them all winners and even the worst teams get trophies . Why can't a dad or mentor take their kid out opening day of deer season to hunt ? Learning the hard way makes for learning REALITY . Could it be that Daddy wouldn't want to give up a shot on a trophy deer if it came by ?1 point

Heres my experience. I, like you, started out with an old bow, but it did its job and got me my first deer. I then went to Gander Mountain and bought a brand new, middle of the road PSE for @ $400 and decked it out. I shot and hunted with it for a few years and I was never really satisfied with it. It was wicked quiet, but just never felt right to me, and I was not consistent with it at all. I did everything from changing to a better string, to different sight, etc etc in an effort to get it right. I finally gave up on it. I went to the local shops and shot every bow I could until I found the one that felt the best to me. In my case, it was a Hoyt Maxxis. Brand new, they were way out of my price range, so I went on to Archerytalk.com and stalked the classifieds until a 1 year old used one popped up for the price I wanted ($450ish) and I made an offer on it, which the guy accepted. I set it up and started shooting. That bow is the best feeling and shooting bow I have ever had. I will never settle for a low end bow again, or pay top dollar for a new one. Ill just figure out what I want and buy it used. Plenty of people out there with too much money that shoot them a few times and get rid of them. Just my 2 cents.1 point

My father used a .243 for years and got a lot of deer with it. When he quit hunting he gave it to me and I have shot a couple with it. I never had an exit hole but was lucky enough that I never had one take a step after hit. I upgraded to a 30-06 this year but would feel fully confident in taking the .243 out. as a matter of fact i still took the .243 out a few time this past season1 point
