  1. My 2nd target buck returned home last night. Almost sealed the deal on him during bow and then he disappeared until last night. Will be chasing him next week with the smoke pole. Hopefully he wants to fill his belly !!

  3. All the years I hunted the southern zone I used various shotgun slug models and took my share of Deer with them, a well placed slug kills as good as anything. Back then it was the law so we used what we could. I can understand sticking with a firearm you are familiar with and have had good results with. For the last thirty-five years doing all of my Deer hunting in the northern zone I have used various rifles, not because they kill better but for their much more precise shot placement especially at longer ranges. With an accurate rifle you can thread the needle through small openings if need be or make a kill easily out to several hundred yards if the opportunity arises. From my perspective a rifle has performance in spades over the shotgun slugs in almost every situation giving the hunter a better chance at success. If I could have used some of the rifles I own now back in those old open country southern zone hunting days it would have been a massacre. Al

  6. Steve the hole was high enough on the deer that if it went through would of hit vitals. That is a good question about my gun. Since shotgun days I always used this gun. I do have a Marlin 35 that is spot on. After this episode the old Gal (1187) stays on the rack. Used that gun for about 35 years. Out comes the 35 on Friday! I appreciate everyones comments. Looking forward to maybe shooting a coyote or two over that deer.

  7. Maybe the leg was forward at the shot and didn’t go into the body cavity? Guy shot is what finally killed it? Maybe????

  8. I do think that for 1-2 years when you put a blind up the big bucks will avoid it during the day. After that they seem to ignore them. We have a lot of elevated shooting houses on the property and it's something I have seen happen a few times. Guys put them up and are all excited to be comfortable while hunting only to not see anything.
