Our Biggest Problem as NY Hunters...
upstaterifle replied to sits in trees's topic in General Chit Chat
What would one have to do to have their own shooting range which could be open to the public? Plenty of golfers out there can go pay a few bucks to smack some balls down range ( I know golf balls don't generally kill anything). My point it, can it be done or are there laws in place that prohibit one from having a shooting range as a business? Is this why there are mainly only private clubs? -

At jusputtn: Do you recommend any in the area or know anyone that belongs to one? I know it is allowable to shoot on state land but you really need to know what you are shooting at, i.e. be sure you have a solid backstop, you are not shooting over the horizon. If you practice good gun control, the state land is ok. You just need to make sure everything is done right. And pick up your brass. Having specific parcels set out would be nice but then you would have more people in a smaller area all trying to find a safe place to shoot. I don't understand why the state does not have some public ranges that they could even charge admission for. -
Where is the best place to find wool pants and the wool check shirts. doesn't seem to be anyone that has anything really...maybe an Army and Navy store?

If you do have a smart phone and get spotty reception it is better to put it on airplane mode. This keeps it from searching for towers and satellites but you can still use it for other things like camera or video. All that searching is what eats up the battery. Then when you know you have good reception, or you are back at camp and you know there is that one spot to get reception, just take it off airplane mode.

That is a very nice buck. Great you were able to get those two different shots. What are is this in?

my biggest gripe is not having somewhere that I can go and practice shooting more often. A family member has some land that when I have time I will practice. From what it sounds like, I do it more than most I talk to. Doesn't feel like it. I wish there was some sort of shooting range that was public where you did not was to belong to a club to go to. There are a few in the area here but you need to know someone to get in pretty much. Having someone to take you under their wing is really a big part and is what really got me into things this year. Finding time to do everything is tough with family things but when the kids are bigger it will be easier. I also agree that the initial investment can be pricey but these are tools really which as long as you take care of things you will have a long time. -
What if you are somewhere that you are not going to be home or to refrigeration until the next day? Is it better to just leave the deer hanging if it is under 40 degrees?

Thats great news! Good shot.

I have always wanted to go hunting but there was never anyone in my family or friends who really wanted to. I am 29. Have a friend at work who has been going for years and now I'm in. Can't wait for things to start. I really look at hunting as a skill that should be know and I am looking forward to many years ahead. -
The dog head no idea what to do.

Looks like someone stuck five fingers in the ground.

Check out this thread to get an idea of who is where..What Zone

Can't wait to get out there and browsing around on here doesn't really help. I was wondering who hunts where. I am going to mostly be in 5J and 5R for my doe. My sister has land in 4a so that is a possibility if time allows.
-
I just got mine for 5R. Gonna have to bring out that shotgun. If anyone is looking for bow the guy at Dick's told me they are almost giving them away for 4J. Heard there are some nice deer in the Pine Bush there.

Is it necessary to use a rifled choke when I'm shooting rifled slugs out of the smooth bore?
-
Probably no more than 50 yards. Thinking that I can probably stick with the smoothbore. I don't need any sort of choke with the rifled slugs on that right?
-
when you change barrels, do you have to re sight things in like with the irons or a scope? I wasnt sure since everything is attached to the barrel when you take them off.
-
Looking to hunt in some WMU's this season that do not allow me to use my rifle. I have a Mossberg 535 12ga, with a smooth bore. I know you can shoot rifled slugs out of this, but should I really be looking into a different barrel with a scope or at least the front and rear iron sights if I am going to be using this for deer? What I have now is just a bead. I know I will need to get some shooting time in before I use it so I'm trying to figure this out.

Here is some good info on your chances by WMU http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/30409.html

Sounds like a nice gun man. I can't wait for you to bring it around so I can see it. -
That's amazing! Will it stay black when it grows up?
