  1. Thank you for posting this. So true, unfortunatley alotta people have selective memories.
  2. I don't buy the mistaking a holstein for a deer stories. Hunter education became a requirement in the late 1940's, though it focused on safety. It was expanded in the 1970's to include other aspects such as wildlife identification. However, TV has been around the whole time. I find it pretty hard to believe that someone could reach hunting age without at least seeing a cow on TV. Christ, they're even in the circus. The one time I was shot at, it was by a local upstater. Lumping folks into a category based on where they're from indicates little thought expended.
  3. I just picked up one last year. A bow's rated weight is based on a 28" draw length. Your draw length is set by you and affects the bows pull weight. I purchased a 50 lb bow knowing that with my 26 1/2" draw length, I'd be holding 47 lbs at my full draw. I use a standard three finger hold. It's what I'm used to. I purchased mine from PSE's website. The price was right and I wasn't looking to spend a lot. For tips on instinctive shooting, I went to you tube. There are plenty of videos on it. I need to practice a lot more than I have been before I'd consider hunting with it.
  4. I wasn't planning to attend the show on January 12 and 13th. But protesters have been circulating a petition to stop the show and plan on being there to picket the opening on the 12th, I've been motivated to show up and support the show. I hope others in the area feel likewise.
  5. The bullet manufacturer's websites will have information on what their bullets are designed to do.
  6. http://www.airguns.net/trajectory.php Here's a link to a trajectory calculator. It's on an airgun site but the physics is blind to that. So enter the data for the rounds you want to use. You should be able to google up the info but may have to make some approximations here and there on things like ballistic coefficient.
  7. Start simple and the rest will come in time. How can you figure out what works for you until you get rolling along for a bit.
  8. IMO, any politician that makes a statement like "I don't think legitimate sportsmen are going to say I need an assault weapon to go hunting." should immediatley be dismissed from the position. A statement like this demonstrates a total lack of understand or respect for the Constitution. Anyone who supports such a statement is a shallow thinker. What they should be thinking is I wonder which ammendment will be attacked next? Once again, very unfortunatley, it has bee demonstrated that fellons and/or nut cases don't follow the law by the recent event in Webster, NY. Once the "authorities" realize that outlawing black guns doesn't fix anything, they will be after your hunting guns. Get vocal, act professionally, and communicate with your representives please. Also, the NRA still offers the Easy Pay Life plan. Just make 40 monthly or quarterly, your choice, payments, of $25. No interest, no fees, it's a great deal. That's how I became a life member quite a while ago.
  9. A bit of logical thought and research on historical fires involving ammunition would have reached the same conclusion at much less expense. Had a semi-auto 22 fire once with chamber not fully closed. Bullet stayed in chamber, shards of brass exited out the side. Glad I was on shooter's left. My dad used to tell a story of someone tossing some 30-30 rounds in a wood stove in an warming hut at an ice skating rink. Kids dove out of the shack when they started cooking off. Country fun circa 1940 in rural upstate. True that the bullets wouldn't go anywhere but I always wondered what if someone went to check the fire right then. I put a handful of misc powder in a burn barrel once. The flame that came out of the top makes one very respectful and careful while handling and storing it.
  10. The NYSDEC does not allow a fee to take hunter education classes. If this is true about TNT in L.I., your buddy should contact the DEC as it would be unethical and likely illegal.
  11. Here's a thought. Don't watch it. Don't do it. Why are there 4 pages of bitchin' about this topic. Sounds like a bad marriage.
  12. Holy shirt! Quite a story and quite a bear. Nice job.
  13. There is no justification for such a class. There have been no notices of such from the DEC.
  14. Adjusting a die for different bullet types is pretty quick if you make up a dummy round for each bullet type. Just back off the seater, put it in the dummy round and lightly screw down the seater until you feel it touch. Should put you within a few thousanth's of the overall length on the first try.
  15. Oops, make that responsible in item 4.
  16. You'll likely want to buy powder &primers locally as there's a hazardous material charge on top of shipping. I've started trying out Midsouth Shooters Supply. Prices seem competitive but I've only placed one order so far.
  17. I haven't taken the time to read all of this lengthy thread so please forgive if I'm being repititous. A 243, 223 357,etc. will take deer just fine. IMO, the issue here is the fallacies that have somehow transgressed into "fact ". 1-a bad shot is a bad shot no matter what cartridge is used. 2-there is no requirement for a bullet to pass through to be effective 3-having a deer run a bit in the few seconds it takes to die is the norm 4-I have no desire to shoot a deer at a poor angle as I don't want to waste any meat or be reasonable for a slow agonizing death . Be ethical and you will have a short follow up.
  18. There is no muzzleloader class. Hunter Education class is to hunt with any gun. Muzzleloader is a separate fee in addition to the hunting license you choose to purchase.
  19. Biz, why did the small buck get mounted? Someone's first?
  20. He's plenty big enough. Congratulations!
  21. I use a plug in wand in wand in my locker. $25? and no recharge worries. Steel doesn't start to weaken until it hits 800 degrees. I'd be more.concerned with the wood stocks. Is it still that hot on the far side of the room?
  22. Old guns with Damascus twist steel barrels are dangerous with modern shells. I have regular steel barrelled shotguns from the 1920's that shoot just fine. Though most manufacturer's used serial numbers to track inventory, serial numbers weren't required until the 1968 Gun Control Act. You can mic the end of the barrel, if that thing will screw off, and Google the choke diameters.
  23. I have one. Excellent firearm. It shoots Foster slugs so well, I've never bothered with rifled slug barrels.
  24. Just tried venison kidney for the first time, actually first time for any kidney. Must have watched Bizzar Foods too many times. Fried it like regular venison. Texture is more like a mushroom. Flavor is similar but different. Recommend giving it a taste.
