Home made Teriyaki Salmon, and rosemary honey glazed walnuts.

If anyone needs a place to deer hunt I have a spot, no camping on the lease but lots of land and cheap. Central NY south of syracuse. Number of spots depends on deer population densities, first come first serve.

Naptime behind my friends house. Waiting for a lunch time destruction of bird feeders.

Hunters pay for much of our land and reasearch. Every new hunter is a help in our journey to keep access to public land and animal health research. I have always given as much information as possible to everyone. Although everyone may not agree with me, personally I encourage all new additions to the hunting world. Also just because someone hunts doesn't necessarily mean they change the outcome of my hunting.

I think big game is very solo for me. It's a direct match of wit between me and the deer. Any success I have is my reward, in turn if I come up empty handed its on me. My lease does deer drives, I participate much less frequently as time goes on. Chasing turk birds is a hunt that I can totally enjoy solo but taking my wife and kids has been awesome the last few years. On a day when the birds are hot and you have them located it can be a real treat. Kids behind us in a pop-up watching and listening to it all while I'm trying to get my wife a bird has been one of the most satisfying experiences for me in the woods. Small game is great both ways, can use eachother to move the game around. I like tracking and keeping an eye out on your for the opportunity to miss a rabbit or grouse ! Lol. Small game with dogs can be amazing also. One thing I seldom do solo is water foul hunt. Putting out geese dekes in a field of mud and corn stubble can be labor intensive, laying in a blind alone is more like nap time then fun time, i have done it prefer talking crap to a buddy laying next to me. Cold weather and setting up the spread over water is safer and more enjoyable with 2 people or more. Also eating snacks in a blind with friends and family is one of my favorite times.

Genetics definitely play a large roll

I do have endless amounts of game and 2500 acres to hunt, and killed a couple of ny "dandies" imo. I was raised by guys with 1 buck tag and occasionally 4 person party tags. I now can legally kill almost 200 deer a year. We eat or share every deer we kill. I keep the pelts, eat the organs and most edible parts. I've probably killed close to 100 deer, even though my father probably killed less than 20. All deer were trophies growing up, they were treated that way and i still do. I can say some of my kills were more exciting and felt more rewarding but they are all trophies to me. As well as the small game and even sheds. Everyone is allowed thier own experience and feelings I thought this post was about that exact topic. Some of these responses smell a little judgey. Just saying.

Hunting High Pressured Public Land BIRDS
Kmartinson replied to Homgister13's topic in Turkey Hunting
Public is tough, it is a sucess to get one. I also think alot of big birds sneak around solo on public. Btw It's covid, or covid 19, or even corona virus. It's disrespectful to a whole country to call it the "China" virus when it has killed so many people all over the world. It's perpetuating a racially incorrect statement that has nothing to do with the general population of China regardless of where it originated. I think much better of you than that Bill. -
Alot of antlers still on the head where I'm at. Bird feeders getting smashed up!
-
I get excited, and stand proud of all of my kills. I wouldn't take an animal if I didn't respect it as a trophy. It gives its life for you.
-
I hear that. Once you start dumping them with your buddies it takes over. Youll be watching tony vandermore and habitat flats. Lol It takes me 1 afternoon with a mini tiller and I hand cast the seed preferably before a rain. I have birds to hunt every time I give it a 3 or 4 day rest. Basically every weekend. Don't be surprised if it turns into the same feeling as deet hunting!

You can usually plant stuff on edges of ponds in mid summer that will really bring.em in later. I like millet. Grows and plants easy.

I'm all about the cameras on public right now. We do wildlife preserves around the "city" and when a big one sheds we get after it. Otherwise we leave the lease alone until mid march or I guess if cams show them shed. This is a relatively mild winter I wouldn't go into beds until may be just before turkey season. I find some sheds chasing birds for sure. I find deadhead to but usually I use those antlers for projects, finding a shed is really special to me. I may only find 10 a year.
-
That's a sweet set up. Looks like a couple dandies on there. I'm guessing that's a few seasons. Is that all sheds or are there dead heads cut off in thier too?

Venison Char Siu Bao and fried lettuce. First time trying this, really awesome. Dim sum at home.
-
Have you ever been there? We can get together and I'll take you over. It's about 20 minutes from my house. We may get a chance at some snows here. Any time you want to take a shed walk I got some spots soaking with cams. Only guessing 30% dropped so far.

I dont know how closely the timing is in thier life there compared to the wild, but I do check it during shed season like a camera. Every couple of weeks. Also cortland produce bring out of date vegetables down around 4pm most days and the deer come out from the whole area. Also some stud jeweled up birds down there sometimes.
