Crossbows proposed in all seasons 2021
Foggy Mountain replied to DoubleDose's topic in New York State Hunting News
There’s no coming after you. If you say something erroneously can someone not correct that? Maybe use correct information. That would help. I will say I understand your intent is to help and I do respect that. Too many times though it’s steering someone wrong information wise. If I’m incorrect or say something incorrect I welcome your comments. You mention what archers think yet aren’t one and don’t actually know. You couldn’t have spoken to any or many hard core guys either. All archers are welcome. All potential new archers have my offer of help and that’s not said in passing. I do it and will continue to do it. -
Crossbows proposed in all seasons 2021

For starters I don’t hunt with wheels. 2, crossgun companies now offer a second shot crossgun. Tell me exactly how I could be quicker even with a styk? If your friend can’t shoot a gun I’m amazed. Never knew anyone totally proficient with a bow that was completely unable to use a gun efficiently. I’m sorry but this just ain’t what you’re saying. Something is missing from your post. The last paragraph is sort of the everyone included mentality of today. Again sorry crossgun a can be included with gun season. Why not try that if you want to use it??? That was not addressed in your post??? I’ll wait -
Do u guys use drag dents when walking to your stand
Foggy Mountain replied to luberhill's topic in Deer Hunting
I use drag rags successfully most years. The key is usage. Make sure the wind is correct for what you’re trying to do and use a good doe in heat type scent. The walk phase is about when you want to do it. Actually the best time for grunting to. I never load a rag up. I don’t need to be able to smell it, the deer do. Imo best if they’re almost/about smell what they think they are looking for. They keep straining to work it out and seem mesmerized. One word of caution I don’t grunt to a deer working a scent. Don’t change his mindset. Let him come. I’d only grunt after I saw a buck not near it and never grunt randomly. Just because others have no luck doesn’t mean it doesn’t work. It works perfectly at certain times though perhaps limited times. You’ve got to know when that is for best results. Once you see dead bucks all over the road in the fall the walk phase has typically started around about Halloween. Once the rut starts it’s over. As stated don’t drag it directly stopping at your tree, you wind up with a quartering to shot. I go past than semi circle before I hang it -

This is completely incorrect again. Shows how out of touch you are. Archers don’t care about competition. If a bunch of guys wanted to archery hunt so be it. If someone needed help lots would and will even offer it. They’d gladly help the new hunter drag even if it was a “big public buck”. You can’t put your personal thoughts on others. A crossbow isn’t nor will it ever be archery. Archery gear has no stock, is drawn under own power when we’re about to shoot and takes skill to perfect. A crossgun can be shot well in seconds. I’ve got years of actual, factual experience with that unlike the above guess as to why folks are against it. If someone was disabled I don’t have a problem with it. If not and if you’re willing to learn archery welcome. If you want to gun hunt, stay there. Not so difficult to understand. How come the crossgun guys don’t push to be out there rifle season? Lots of archers would certainly like that. God forbid the crossgun guys challenge themselves. Big difference in mindset. Archers have always tried to do things the hard way. That’s the core reason they do what they do. Bet you didn’t know that. Sure sounds like you didn’t. Crossgun guys aren’t concerned with that either. They want things easy. I’ve seen you post exactly that. You wonder why the opposition? Now add crossguns offering a second shot, range finding scopes, 100 yard shots. Sounds just like archery to me. Consider those points, you may understand -
Prayers for all involved

Bonefish to me is one of the coolest saltwater fish to fly fish for. Awesome experience

I’ve got lots of tattoos, from my feet to my shoulders. That being said there might be one or two I may have done differently and they’re from some great guys so that’s not the issue. More of the planning. Why don’t you get just one. Let that sink in and decide where you wanna go? What you want to do? Regarding the pain. Idk guys I just don’t see it. To me it’s like a sunburn perhaps even in the worst of places and honestly after a bit it’s like someone running their fingers on me almost like tickling your back. To me it’s kinda relaxing. I know everyone feels it differently but I’d not sweat it. If I could go every day just to get one even with no ink I’d definitely go. Post up a pic once it’s done

Forgot to mention something. The balloons are cool, after a bit with archery gear I’ve done it but I bet it’d work with a BB gun too, I take powder, corn starch, even used chalk line chalk but put it in pill bottle. Stretched a balloon mouth over top. Tapped some powder in and blew up balloon. When they hit it now you see an explosion. With chalk line, I don’t like it as much but you got colors. One word of warning. Make sure you do it somewhere you don’t mind there being the powder dust or you’ll need to clean it up. It’s a fun thing to do and as time passes adds more for them to look forward too

HuntENY92 my daughters started going early. My oldest would sit on my shoulders and work hounds by 2. Caught her first fish 3 days before her 2nd birthday. Her younger sister believe it or not was only 15 months old. Obviously I had to cast for her. My kids would come trapping riding a jet sled around 2 as well. Actively hunting lots depends on what it is and how they are. Don’t bring em on a deer hunt and make them sit hours and hours. My buddy’s son though has come with us doing about everything including waterfowl since age 4. Just start involving the child and let them progress at their own pace. The kid could definitely panfish now. Springtime bring them along if you pick mushrooms or any type foraging. Point out tracks. Show old rubs, etc. Bring them on an easy scout session. Let them hear early morning turkey gobble. Set up a target, put big balloons on it and start them with proper form using a string bow, if you don’t understand ask me, and set them up close. When they break balloon make a big deal over it. Remember to check eye dominance To determine if they shoot lefty or righty. . There are tests for little kids. I can explain that too when you’re ready. As mentioned bring them squirrel hunting. So what if they fidget and blow your shot. You could carry in a blind set it up in the dark or the night before to conceal any of the movement. I could go on but by three I’d have already started introducing aspects to them. Pan fishing, ice fishing, scouting, picking berries, scouting, shooting a bow, learning to cast a rod, helping train a dog, listening for turkey, watching a field mid summer for deer, coming along on a quick trap line check, cleaning the dog runs, learning basic steps as long as they want while you make arrows, tie flies, reload. etc etc etc but don’t expect them to do more than watch in passing. Perhaps you could tie flies at the kitchen table while the kid has his cookies and milk, I’d bet he’d at least watch some, involve them and remember everything we do effects our kids. Tv and video games are time wasters. Limit that, increase time with the kid at their pace. Be careful never to overdue anything. If you need any help or ideas please ask. I’d be happy to help. The age you’re recommending is a great age. Everything is so new. Now get your bluegill rods and camera ready to start making memories you’ll look back on years later. It’s almost spring. Matter of fact my oldest daughter I mentioned caught her first fish three days before her 2nd birthday. Her birthday is mid March.

Depends where you are

You’re gonna think I’m crazy but it’d not be just one purchase if there was enough. Alberta or a midwestern state along the Rockies would be my first pick. Than a small place in a turkey spot. I’m not sure if I’d pick Nebraska, Dakotas, etc for Martian’s or if I’d stay with easterns. Than I’d pick a spot in the keys for bonefish and tarpon. One of the quite less touristy type keys. If money was left over I’d pay off my brothers houses and even my ex wife’s. She did a good job with her part of my kids development. God bless her for that. You said it was a dream. To me that’s a good one.

I am very passionate about the kids here are just a few pics of some cool hunts. Some were neighbors, girl with cap was a girl who’s mom approached me just to take her, friends kids, my kids, etc. The girl shooting the pistol was extremely against firearms. She says now it’s her favorite thing. The little boy with bow is from the city. His first time shooting anything. Our future

Here’s a pic from a couple weeks ago. My buddy, his uncle and son and a neighbor kid he invited along. Kids first hunt he was estactic.
-
Guys it can’t stop at our kids. We need to invite the neighbor kids, family friends kids, etc etc Even simple things like shooting, not only invite the kid but their siblings and parents if they don’t shoot. It’s what I do. We’d expose alot more people this way

Guys I’m hesitant to post this but something always strikes me. The call videos I see posted very often. The cadence is commonly off, the calls squeak like crazy, there often is no rollover achieved. And must I say the positive comments that follow encouraging others to follow suit are sure to confuse someone. As a newer caller don’t listen to any of it. Practice listening to real turkey. Dr Lovett Williams has cds to help. Purrs are best achieved riding your hand up higher on a striker so it flutters easily btw. It should be easy and quite or else it sounds like a fight sound. Hope that made sense. To get a second note on a pot you often need to run between two holes, sometimes across one. That’ll help with the break. Listen and practice cadence. Don’t pick up striker for yelps. Box calls need you to run to the concave section of handle. Almost to closed point to get the break. Start out and drag lid in. You can slowly do it initially til you see where it “yawks”. I’m referring of course to the yelps again. . While I’m on this don’t pick up lid in either direction while trying to yelp. Many state every turkey sounds different. This is true but they don’t get out of cadence or squeak like crazy too often. David Halloran has some good, basic box call videos and he’s from NY. There’s a lot more to basic calling but those few stand out as the most improperly presented issues. This is knocking no one. It’s to help someone. Another quick point I’ll add. Perfect calling in the wrong spot is worse than minimal less than perfect calling in the right spot. Doesn’t excuse you from helping yourself learning a call. Just like any animal, be where they are going and make sounds they’re expecting. It could be scratching the leaves making feeding sounds. Anyone could pull that off but there is a way to do it most effectively. There’s no magic in calling. It’s being in the right location first, possibly the last thing some think of, learning calls, and knowing when/how to use em. Cadence is key.

What I would recommend is finding good rabbit or hare cover than looking in the snow to see tracks to tell if any are around.
-
Cool nostalgia but pretty impractical. Too much movement in using and what do you do with it when time to shoot? Throw it down it gets stepped on. Turn around to carefully place it you just scared everything away.
-
The fact it’s on a gunstock takes it out of bow category. Ya all see the great new crossgun for $4000 with the range estimating scope? They should make one that is left at stand and shoots when the WiFi camera takes a pic of the buck you want. That would be great. I know so many are a little busy. Maybe one to drive it home, field dress and butcher it too? The possibilities are endless here.
-
idk why you’re so insecure.
-
I certainly wasn’t inferring you weren’t knowledgeable
-
That’s why I was recommending a long box. It reaches the furthest
-
Yes that’s somewhat true but let’s be honest a good call sounds worlds better than pretty much all the cheaper stuff. Op what are you considering cheap? Ernie Fetters is pretty reasonable but more than the commercially available stuff at Walmart. If you were somewhere near Orange County I could let you try some to see what suits you. And op what will surprise you is the ease at which decent calls play. That’s something I forgot to mention.
-
I’m not doubting you. I use the silver stuff too. I never used any that wasn’t but like I said I don’t freak too much. Guess I’m a scrub but I seriously can’t remember real issues. It should be known in a blue collar guy so my hands are in all kinds of stuff. Someone said they use gloves. That’d fix the issue pretty easily. You could use it to advantage too. Rub some on your buddy. When he goes to clean up grab his spot
-
Idk I’m not a real squeamish guy with dirt on my hands. I guess but I don’t recall any real issues and I use it on chokes and obviously car parts fairly regular.
-
Idk if anyone serious about these will tell you spots. Where ya located anyhow? NY is a big state
