Foggy Mountain replied to luberhill's topic in General Hunting
Hmmm I guess it was all over. I paid 100 bucks open box. Think my buddy’s paid about what you did. I bought mine late summer, perhaps that’s why Now regarding size I personally wore same exact size I always wear and it’s perfect. -
Best cold weather gear for stand sitting
Foggy Mountain replied to luberhill's topic in General Hunting
To answer the ops question, years ago I went through an issue that changed my tolerance for real cold. It made hunting in cold miserable. I bought a heated vest this year and so far used it in temps 23 degrees was the coldest. It makes the hours pass pretty easily. I got an Ororo after looking at dif types. I liked the small battery size but it’s not good for an all day sit. Never had it run out when I sat there on a morning or evening post and would just recharge at lunchtime. The vest has warmers by the hand/belly area. In the morn I commonly toast a bagel and throw it in my pocket. If I turn the vest on it actually warms my breakfast. Silly but nice. There are heated areas across your back warming your shoulders/mid back and to me best of all the collar is heated. The back of my head where the spine meets typically gets real cold. That thing warms your neck fantastic. A buddy of mine tried it. He bought one for him and his son. My other buddy Joe bought it. He bought one for him and his son as well. His son friend has bought one as well. Two of the fellows in my Gun club tried it when I allowed the first friend to wear it. They’ve bought one each. My buddy Joe has since ordered the socks but here’s my observation on this, yours may be different, since your core area stays warm your extremities never seem to get cold. The other day was 23 and my gloves were off just stuffed in my pockets. I’m wearing reg muck boots instead of bulky boots and my feet have never gotten cold. I put my shirt, perhaps a thermal on than my vest. I keep it relatively near my body. Outer jacket during now is a carhardt type jacket that stops wind. During later archery it wasn’t as cold and I didn’t need the wind breaker. Regarding archery, another observation, it can be hard to shoot dressed like the Michelin man. Most times I was forced to put my jacket on as it would sit tied to my pack waiting to be needed if I didn’t make a note to put it on. I’d be dressed super light in comparison to previous years. Was real nice. Hope I covered enough to help you. The vest is a game changer. I’d def but another if I lost the first one. -

I love the .243 but does anyone make in semi ?
Foggy Mountain replied to luberhill's topic in Deer Hunting
The first thing that struck me is why do you want a semi? They’re not commonly as accurate. They won’t lock up as tight. They also need shorter type rounds so they feed properly. Most commercial rounds actually are too short because of this so it might not be a concern but you can’t get the most out of a round from a semi. You’d be amazed how accuracy changes even 3-5 thousands of an inch. Mic your hair. It’s about .003 A shorter bullet often yaws into the barrel. Any rifle round is to me anyhow a one shot type weapon. If there was a sensitivity problem a .243 alone should be ok. Not discouraging you just a FYI -
But it’s not archery equipment even if you want it to be.

I typically use a Sako .300 mag. Shot an awful lot of deer with that gun and there’s no factory triggers I’ve ever seen close and I’m a trigger guy. That may be my choice again. Got a safe full of rifles so it’s gonna seem crazy, my other possible first choice is a .243 Rem 700. Not as much to my liking as the Sako but lighter and shorter and shoots pretty tight groups. . Got a few places I need to hike substantially, if I go there it’ll be coming. As I write my coffee table is full of reloads for both.

Tree down on property line. How do I handle?
Foggy Mountain replied to Don_C's topic in General Chit Chat
I don’t think it’s a 30” tree either. I woulda just went up n cut it. No matter who’s tree, who’s responsibility, etc. Who won’t be getting in to hunt. You so imo it’s in your interest to just move it. -
I haven’t personally seen it. Not seeing dead bucks all over the road yet, a sure indication of walk phase starting. My buddy had a spike grunting trailing a doe yesterday. I should state he’s a cop and said at nights through the little bucks have been pestering does

Question For The Successful Hunters So Far
Foggy Mountain replied to SportsmanNH's topic in Bow Hunting
Interesting question, I’m in the woods almost every day running dogs, picking mushrooms, berries, scouting, etc but the tick numbers are very low to non existent this year it seems. Been that way all year. I mostly hunt 3M but spent time in Delaware and Sullivan co this spring as well -

Before than after topping

Puffball pizza. Not my fav mushroom but a great idea my buddy’s wife came up with. These things are popping up all over

Found some hen of woods. My fav mushroom. Butter, garlic, onion. Last of what I found

Kinda crazy not to care about accuracy. You can custom tailer any load to do what you want. Different bullet types, different speed, etc. Let me ask you besides a complete solid do any really not work the way we want on our game? It’s all degrees. The solid actually would too with the correct game, surely not whitetail. If the rifle wasn’t dead on accurate, not printing tiny groups I’d sell it. Why would you think a super accurate rifle can’t perform as well? Kinda short sighted and imo not even close to finishing the job. I’d think most rifle guys would feel same Least ones I know.
-
I def disagree with the accuracy. In many guns the Sierra is doing superior. The shot mentioned was 2 years ago. New heads. The fellow that uses them though in that gun finds em best accuracy wise. That’s what I alluded to earlier. I like Gameking but my shelf if full of all kind of heads and the gun gets what it likes best.

Chacha, what kinda bow you shooting? After deer season I’d like to do a rabbit bow hunt. It’s all guys with Stykbows though. I’ve got dogs medium speed who shouldn’t lose anything. Nothing is set yet but pm me your info if you’re interested. We don’t shoot on a jump. The dogs gotta circle first and the shots must be safe. Just a FYI What kinda name is Chacha?

Maybe I should pray for ya. You’re talking silly. It’s easy on a computer let it go. You made a comment showed your ignorance. It’s ok. We all make mistakes. I forgive ya
-
You absolutely have the right to your opinion. I even respect you for that and respect your reasons and assumptions. . What I don’t respect is you calling someone names from behind a computer. It’s Low class
-
Classy, calling someone you don’t know nor do you know the why or how about this, names. Another guy doesn’t know what he doesn’t know but has a big opinion based on assumptions. Reminds me of a chick making fun of another girl to make themselves feel better bout themselves. Sort of an insecurity. I’ll pray for ya.

Here’s the thing. It is true everyone will have favorites. Be careful though about what you hear. Take it apart and consider marketing. Nosler is a giant advertiser. Many guys repeat what they hear. The heads are good. Guys state they shoot lots of deer with them and I’m sure they do. Someone can’t compare the best if they don’t experiment. I’m not saying anyone doesn’t here mind you. To explain further, Look up the reviews on a primos bamboozle Turkey call. I’m gonna be blunt. It’s garbage. See what you read about how great guys think it is. Guys really aren’t sure where their knowledge ends. In reloading some guys just put things together. That’s a big part of what I’m sure guys want right now. Thats cool. Some guys massage a gun/bullet combo until it’s peaked. Different powders are tried, different charges of that powder. Different primers, how bout changing the seating depth of a bullet? It all matters. Some guys weigh brass. There’s more but you can go as far or as easy as you like. You’re doing it though. Experimenting is cool. Initially on a gun I’d load 3-5 shells all dif types. Yes and even different heads. Nosler included. I test them all than change it. I’m looking to develop peak performance. Continually testing. I don’t have one single gun well maybe a 22-250 ballistic tips they’re the most accurate in. A .375 HH I have likes A Frames. The rest and there’s a bunch like Sierra. Experimenting with heads leads to load testing on game. Did I tell ya Sierra is best. See for yourself. Don’t believe everything you hear. Now don’t disbelieve it either. Keep your mind open and use what’s best by you. Test all for yourself. That’s the fun of reloading imo

Grampy I was thinking another thing and it’s just a curiosity. I’ve never seen or even heard of one blowing up on impact. Guess I wasn’t even thinking that. You though assumed that. It’s something I never said so perhaps each time you’ve heard it someone was talking like me or was it what you’ve actually heard someone claim?
-
I think we’re just talking different. It doesn’t blow up before it enters. That’s def ridiculous. You can’t say being the bullet expands so quickly it doesn’t do massive damage if say it hits a bone? I’ll give you one for instance, there’s a lot though. My buddy shot a buck running with his 270 ballistic tips. Was angling bad and might as well have blown up in the opposite ham. Bones and metal fragments mixed in with chopped meat. A Gameking wouldn’t do that.
-
Well here’s a sure fire way to get close. Post a topo of NY on your garage. Stand back 15’ and throw a dart at it. Exactly where it hits you’ll find squirrels. They’re honestly everywhere. Just go out early and sit in a mast area. If you look on any rock walls you’ll see broken shell piles. Start there. Good luck

Look into or call manufacturer. They’ll know what pattern was used. No sense buying all kinds of stuff you can’t use
