Mistakes , Bad luck and Unforeseen Circumstances
Splitear replied to Northcountryman's topic in Deer Hunting
I have a few that I know on the property that I hunt, but this year's was a new one for me. I went out in the afternoon to hunt, found a tree that I thought I liked, but ended up with my toes and knees pointing downward once I got to the top (too much taper). So, I climbed down and found another. When climbing down that afternoon I notched the tree where I stopped with my top cable, and then trimmed limbs on my way down and when I got on the ground. That will probably be my go to tree depending on the wind moving forward. I use HuntStand on my phone as well, so I set a marker at the tree, take a photo of it from my entry point, and also make notes of how my cable set-up was so I don't have to adjust once I'm in the tree (I usually have to do that the first time I climb it). -
My guess is fisher.

I really needed by climber this year as I was hunting over kind of a swampy meadow, and the grass was fairly tall across it. If on the ground I would have had a hard time finding any shots. Taking my climber up about 15 feet gave me a good 125-150 range across the whole area. -
You're not wrong there, and I have owned up to it and recognized and owned my personal flaws publicly on this forum. Each time it was because I allowed myself to get wrapped up in the toxicity of this sub forum, but it's no one's fault but my own. I believe I sent you a personal apology about that as well, and I still mean that apology. I understand if you still hold resentment regarding it, but it is sincere.

I think they are like $30, it's a little tracking tag that you can put on luggage and stuff. I don't have one and have never messed with one, however, I think you use an app to locate whatever it's attached to, sort of like finding a lost phone using "Find My iPhone". I just looked, and they are water resistant, but I would probably keep it in a plastic bag or something if it were going to be exposed to the elements. https://www.bestbuy.com/site/apple-airtag-silver/6461348.p?skuId=6461348&ref=212&loc=1&extStoreId=541&ref=212&loc=1&gclid=CjwKCAiA-9uNBhBTEiwAN3IlNIxpURm7EK2col2uT7z39r33z19LTIqFHyxyy-BBf2am86AcBTCBgBoCkXkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds I just read last week that car thieves are using them to track cars by putting them under license plates and following them until they are unoccupied. Weird stuff.. -

You could try putting an Apple Airtag on your stand, as long as you don't mind the bigwigs in Silicon Valley knowing where your hunting spot is -
I was thinking the same thing

I don't know that I've explicitly called for it in this thread, but I have shown my support for it in the past. I'm totally game, and will probably be better for it. Just to clarify though, you don't get to login as Rattler or anything and start posting, correct?

That sounds like a comedy of errors I hope you can find the humor in it eventually, and I hope you still find/have time to get in the woods during ML. Good luck man! -
I'm wondering if Rattler will make a re-appearance during the lock-out.

I was just thinking this morning about how much time some people on here must spend glued to a screen consuming and regurgitating political garbage. I can't imagine being that wrapped up in this stuff. To each their own, but I know from personal experience, getting even mildly wrapped up in politics did not make me a better person and didn't help me accomplish anything of meaning, quite the opposite actually.

Honest question here, because I truly don't know. Does an increase in mature bucks have a positive effect on the overall health of the deer herd?

I've never really been one that enjoys a ton of holiday music. However with an almost 3 year old, Christmas is a big deal in our house this year. The Pistol Annie's did a Christmas album this year, and one of their songs is such an ear worm, and my daughter loves it to boot. I will say that if I had to pick my favorites, "If We Make It Through December" and "Pretty Paper" would be tied for the top spots in my book. What's your favorite Christmas/Holiday song?

All I know is that I've been hunting in NY for 2 years now, and have been successful both years. The bucks I see aren't near what they were in my native Illinois, but I've never been a trophy hunter. So far I'm pleased with my time in the woods in NY. That is a nice little advertisement for "The Ox Ranch in Texas" though. I read it's a haven for out of state hunters, whatever that means.

That's too bad, I'm sorry for your loss Cynthia.

Ah, I see it now, Black and Tan? Does he have a jacket on him?

Top is a dog with a coat on, maybe a Doberman or lab. Bottom one is tougher, maybe a fox.

Yep, you're right, my brain obviously isn't working right this morning -
Great article! My mom loved to listen to the beagles run, and even became a UKC Bench Judge so she could participate with us when we were running dogs.

I stand corrected -
I can't see anything but some weird caption. Oh well, probably in my best interests that I stay uninvolved.
