  1. LOL sometimes that just how it plays out. Good story, lucky first time hunter. My old boss wanted to bow hunt so I mentored him a lot like you have as well. This guy has never even hunted for anything in his whole life. His very first bow hunt, 30 minutes in he shoots a tremendous 8 point. After recovery he says to me this hunting stuff just sucks, its way to easy. The guy a couple months later gave me all his hunting stuff and never hunted again. Now on the flip side imagine if it takes your brother in law years to get his next deer. His frustration level would have to be higher than most after doing what he has done on his first hunt. Its very cool though you pointed him in the right direction and was part of his first hunting memories. One of the best parts of hunting just unfolded with you all a part of it. I think you deserve to eat the backstraps by yourself lol.
  2. I think I never knew acorns fell from maple and ash trees! I kept looking at the video pausing etc and still cant find an oak tree in it. Maybe Im just blind or stupid and acorns do fall from ash and maple.
  3. 30.06 is more versatile, many many more choices in bullet selections from large game to varmits and even 22 caliber rounds are made for them. If recoil is a killer you dont have to shoot the biggest baddest round through them lol.
  4. This is not true in all cases. IF the electricity goes out on a wood furnace for example there is no power to supply the blower to force the heat through the heat vents throughout the house, it overheats the plenum, burns up the sensor and this is all not good. I am considering a battery backup solution on mine. What good is the generator if no one is home to start it in the winter.
  5. Well hey atleast they got there package. I sent out 2 packages 2nd day priority to the same address. 1 made it in 2 days the other I have been tracking for over a week and it was sent out of Syracuse, hit rochester, hit warrendale Pa, then went back to Rochester, back to syracuse. 2 days later it was back in rochester, next day back in Warrendale and yep you guessed it all the way back to Syracuse the following day. 3 times this package has hit each terminal. I cant make this crap up. Its now finally made it to the PO in Meadville Pa. I called the PO days ago, to find out what the heck is going on and to get reimbursed for paying 2nd day postage. I was told I had to go online and file. I go online and after 20 different links after answering a 100 questions I gave up. Never again will I ship anything other than a damn envelope with them and even then its doubtful. Once a week the houses up and down my road exchange our mail with who it belongs to. Same mail lady for a very long time and we all have complained. Its pretty simple, our names are on the mailbox along with the house numbers. At this point I would be more than happy if she drove through the flower garden and back over it on the way out just to get my mail instead of the neighbors. The PO solution was getting a post office box and picking my mail up. REALLY why not get someone who knows how to do there damn job. Hey its run by the Feds I guess I expect to much.
  6. Thats the reason why it does it. I go right into the home page and click new content. I will reset my browser to go directly to huntingny.com/forums/ instead of just huntingny.com. Thanks.
  7. LOL didnt we have a good conversation about how tapatalk is junk already? baahahahaha Anyhow its on the PC running FIrefox. When I click "View New Content" One of a few things will happen, poke it once and there is no new content, poke it a second time and bammmm its all there, or it will show maybe 3 or 4 new post, close out the site, come back in seconds later and do the 2 sequence poke again and pages of new content show up. If this is not happening to anyone else dont waste any time on my account I can work with it but its not specific to a certain computer either does it on all of them.
  8. I cant get past the 3 shots,1 doe,2 fawns and hit 2 part did the boys all sign there doe tags over to you?
  9. Poaching is my answer to the original question. That covers just about all the violations I would think.
  10. Actually I have. Was not me for the record, but never brag about your deer kill to a DEC officer before handing your license over to him with all your tags still attached to it from prior hunting season while being checked for a fishing license. Yep instant ticket lol dummy
  11. IDK just seemed fitting to me for some reason. lol
  12. 12/13 and I think that was the dumbest test I have taken yet.
  13. Is yours the Yanmar version? All one has to do is look at the serial plate by the PTO shaft and it will say who manufactured it. The front end is little to be desired on the JD790, 850,950,1050. Motor is oversized for the chasis with a loader on those models. If you have a load in the bucket and hit a stump, rock or anything with the left front while turning equals a busted hub. Not a cheap part either by any means. And Yep I have done the bucket shuffle many times to get out of a muck hole. I have put my JD through complete torture and its still going. Its run just about every day throughout the year, from skidding logs up to 30+ inches in diameter, turning over the foodplots, plowing snow, dirt removal, hauling firewood, pulling sap wagons, running the pto wood splitter, brush hogging fields and the list goes on and on. 30hp with turbo charge and great on fuel.
  14. Did you look up to see if Mr.B was in that tree? Or if the limb was sawed half through? Just kidding but I know how you feel, I got wacked last year twice, once while cutting down a big dead oak a limb broke loose and wacked me on the head, then once skidding logs out a branch out of a pine on the log road wacked me on the shoulder. That one hurt, the other the helmet saved me from getting knocked out. Chainsaw chaps and helmet, never saw without them! Be safe!
  15. Hydrostat is the automatic transmission for lack of better words. I am really not a fan of them but have several buddies that will not buy a geared tractor due to ease of operation. I work mine pretty hard and harder than its really intended for. I had a loaner while I was repairing mine and it was a hydrostat, I was using a 2 bottom plow with the same hp tractor as mine and it would just stop moving forward when it got to tough to plow, with my geared one you just goose the gas and she goes. Each has its place and a geared one is not like a vehicle where your shifting through gears, what is nice about the hydrostat however is the ability to control your RPM's to run your PTO and be able to control your ground speed better, with a geared one you run your RPMS at the desired level and select the best gear speed and deal with it. As far as manufacture goes its the old ford chevy dodge debate. The best thing I can say is if your mechanical fixing abilities are limited, or you need warranty work the best tractor might very well be the brand the closest dealer to you is. Nothing like paying $250 bucks to have one trailered to a dealer over a distance to fix a 50 dollar part. There is some great 0/60 financing available right now with some as well. Cant beat that at all. Be prepared for sticker shock, tractors hold there value extremely well on the used ones as well. I almost traded in 4 years ago on a JD 5045 and after trade in I was looking at 12k I stopped in last week and looked at it again when getting parts and the identical one after trade in is now 21k. Lost only 1 grand on trade in value. Inflation is unreal. There are a lot of old tractors out there just do some homework on parts availability, the oldies are still goodies if you find the right one.
  16. Tractor without question. Lots more use especially if you get a loader and many more attachments available, plus more durability.
  17. One other thing is dont hunt the dog with a flushing dog, it really makes a mess of things as one is trying to point and one is busting the point. Everyone goes home disappointed.
  18. I have a GSP that is 5 years old now. One thing I learned and was told by a few trainers when I was asking these same questions is the dog either has what it takes or doesnt. If it does training will be fun and fairly easy compared to trying to train a dog that doesnt have what it takes. This dog is so birdy it wll drive you nuts at times. Especially in the house when it bounces from window to window. It even got to the point the bird feeders outside had to go lol. One of the big things has been pointed out several times and that is getting the dog to accept the gunshot without spooking. I started out with loud hand claps at random times of the day and slowly progressed up to different size calibers of guns during training. Spent many days dragging a scented dummy through the woods and hiding it as she progressed through her training to get on the scent and find birds. Commands were very important and I followed what the trainers I called told me, always always call the dogs name before the command is given so they know you are speaking to them. This is important if you ever hunt with a buddy and there dog together so they are not confused. A dog training collar works very well too. I had to use it once and only once and when it goes on her neck she knows its all business. I dont even take the controller with me. Once you get into a routine it becomes fun and is not that hard at all. Another thing I was told is dont let everyone in the house try to train her or shout out commands, I had a hard time of breaking the kids from randomly yelling bird cause they thought it was quite funny watching her run around the house looking for one. Honestly she just plain had what it takes in her genes and is a natural bird dog. Train a pointer right and they will not kick every bird up before your ready, you want them point and retrieve the bird after the shot when you give the command. AND wait till the dog gives you that look of disappointment when you shoot and the "fetch" command never follows up the shot lmao.
  19. My morning successful hunts are very limited. For me its 11 am till dark and most deer I have taken has been before 2 with evenings coming in second. I think a lot of people over look the potential of mid day hunts. Just like you and me deer need to get up, eat, drink and do there business. I cant recall off hand the number of hours between a deer needs to do these things but its not very long. I will have to look it up again lol.
  20. You got a week till the Muzzle Loader brigade takes run of the place. Never will I understand the reason these are in the same season as bow here. Good grouse hunting though.
  21. By whos standards? I would be hard pressed to call Columbus day weekend anything close to the best weekend for steelhead fishing on the Salmon. I wouldnt even rank it in the top 20 best weekends for steelhead fishing. Not only is there very limited number of steelhead in the river then but its the most packed weekend on the river all year, neck to neck fishermen. You want the top 8 best weekends for steelhead fishing start with the first one in January.
  22. NO NO NO not the republican'S just one in particular, DUH how did you forget already its clearly all Bushes Fault. ROTFLMFAO
