Hope you get him on camera! Nice!

I had a release let go on me a couple times, replaced the release both times. Hit the ground first time and the target the second time. One thing is for sure once you hit that trigger there is no take backs. I have seen arrows do funky things, don't learn this at home.

I agree Doc. I don't see any NEW hunters starting just because crossbows are now legal. I can see many gun hunters taking advantage but new recruits will not happen. But I do really hope both of us are wrong and the numbers swell. If the first year was any indication it will take a few years before the weapon sees any main stream use. Personally I doubt this weapon will ever find a place in my house unless I am not capable of drawing a bow or it is a gift. At least the disabled have another tool to use. Hope I never HAVE to use one!!!

Well mine cost 30,000 with a 10,000 camera and the option of a gun attachment. It is heavy as all hell but I can fit any gun on it. The semi-auto works best to cut down on extra weight. (No extra motors for reload needed.) I connected night vision with infrared so I can shoot and identify anything with a heart beat. It picks up mice to 500+ lb. bears. Just like a video game you can sit in your house and kill anything. Just wish it could gut and drag and I will be set. Next model should have these features. ARG!!! Of course I am joking! I can see the benefit for research and study only. Hunting should not allow this ever, even for scouting.

Recovery can be a issue in residential areas. Some will grant access, but on LI you would have to get permission from about 20 extra houses or more to ensure recovery depending on area. I will get permission from the area residents to allow access, if the other people will not allow recovery, let them deal with a dead deer in the yard. IF I ever do hunt these residential areas it will be about population control only, I could care less about some jerk who will not let me recover and will let the DEC handle it. The meat would be donated anyway so if some jerk will not allow recovery then it will be one less deer I will have to pay for. Love how some people get on their high horse and say NO recovery because I was disrespected. So much for encouraging a fellow hunter. Personally if anyone asked for permission to recover a deer on my properly it would not only be granted but I would actually help them. Pathetic how low tolerance people have for one another especially ones who are involved in the same sport you participate in.

If I ever do hunt this area it will be about population control only. I would love to hear how they come up with these idea's. Seems they are trying to throw money at the problem, typical of the area. Here is an idea, how about 20$ for every doe to any successful hunter. 200 deer taken at 4,000 $ Sounds a little better to me. Compared to 22 at 15,000$. Plus the cost of feeders, chemicals and food storage. 240,000-250,000$ a year. How they can justify this cost is baffling to me.

Very nice! -
I used a traditional bow but never hunting, I was not comfortable with its accuracy, range and effectiveness. I have used black powder but had issues in damp rainy weather. I have shot all types of sights including none on guns. I choose the compound because it works in any weather for the most part and I can be effective out to 50 yards accurately with a pass through. I can use it in any season or area any other weapon is allowed for deer like shotgun and black powder only areas. I can use it from Opening day Northern Zone bow September 27 through rifle, black powder and shotgun seasons. By the end of December I am burned out so late season January is usually recovery time.

LoL that was good Wooly! O that celebration noise! LMAO And you know I would never put you in the category of my slob hunting friends lol. I must know more slobs than most!
-
They are wooly, lol. And I really do not feel like stating all there faults or how many of my hunting friends are not dedicated, most of them have a life and hunting is not a high priority, getting the kids from school is. Plain and simple hunting=shooting, most of the lazy hunters I know do not shoot enough or very well. Put them on a bench rest at 50 yards they think that's ok with 20 rounds. Asking them to take a free hand shot is taboo. When they do the results are comical and sad. Now the dedicated hunters I know are a whole different breed. Hunting is not just something they do for turkey in spring and fall along with deer. Hunting is a year round endeavor and passion. Like you said some may use the crossbow and as the popularity grows so will its use.
-
I don't think so Wooly. But I know of a few hunters that I could see giving up all the extra time to perfect the bow skills and cross over to the dark side, lol. Meat hunters too! But the dedicated ones would never have it, if they could not pull back on a bow they would not use a crossbow instead, they would be done hunting bow. I guess time will tell. One thing I will say its nice to have the option open.
-
Could not agree more! Well said! I see the same thing. Most slobs have a crossbow all ready. Like was mentioned before hopefully this will help with less wounded animals. But they are slobs so I doubt it as they will push the limits with no knowledge of trajectory factored in. Happy for the old and disabled that could benefit but this should have been allowed by them before.

If you live in a residential area don't do it. I use to think it was ok but after shooting 1,000's of arrows at Suffolk Archers I have seen how an arrow can ricochet. Plain and simple if you are going to do this at your house, do it inside at dots on your target. Get the orange dots that are just larger than your arrow and practice precision. The noise of a compound bow to the laymen can be disturbing and doing it closer to your neighbors yard to shoot at your house is not really a fix. Get into a archery club they are relatively cheap and fun. Good luck, hope everything works out ok.

Thanks CulverCreek I was just going to say that.

Remove the gif from the site. It should not be available.

Tick are a big issue in these area and Lyme is the main reasoning for population control. Despite the complains about car accidents and plant shrub damage. It just seems evident they have never consulted a deer biologist and are trying to figure it out themselves. Typical, they are throwing money at the problem with the hope that is will just go away.

Town of North Haven NY. Cost of snipers for deer cull 15,000$. Deer taken estimated 22. Goal achieved? https://www.27east.com/news/article.cfm/Sag-Harbor/56448/North-Haven-Appears-To-Have-Completed-Its-Deer-Cull Estimated cost of deer Post program 240,000$-250,000 a year to reduce ticks. (Under deer summary.) http://northhavenny.us/deermanagement.htm At least they are seeking ways to get permission from land owners and more hunters. So it seems, think I will inquire. The 150 foot rule would help. Access is usually an issue, if the town goes knocking on doors and explains the situation it could help with approval and access if done properly. Estimated cost with sniper and post program 255,000$ - 265,000$ a year. Some good bow hunters could keep the population at recommended levels at a much better cost with better results. This area is less than 3 square miles. Thoughts

Long Island Deer cull? 15,000$ to kill 22 deer in the town of North Haven. No way bow hunters could have done this good, LOL. Pathetic use of tax payer money. http://easthamptonstar.com/?q=News/2012705/Deer-Town-Sights Dam NCountry you are way up North but not the furthest on this forum. Dam I am cold now. lol Urban and farm hunting is vastly different from public land hunting. If you do not understand this as fact you need to try both. Hunter population and deer per square mile can be vastly different. Soil, topography, canopy I could go on, simply put sounds like you are in a great area and are pretty pissed off. Do you still have access to this farm? Did other bow hunters kick you out? Otherwise simply reread GMan's post, he hit the nail on the head.

I think Luck always has a part, sometimes bad. Working on my shooting has made for much better luck for me and is why I stress it so much. So many factors when the moment of truth comes. One thing I have learned is being prepared in deep ADK woods is key. Extra food, proper clothes, hydration and knowing when to stop or slow down if exhausted or overheating, good maps, compass and GPS, flashlights and good navigation skills. Taking it as more of an adventure vs just trying to kill a deer makes it a journey. With that attitude the deep ADK will never disappoint! I now realize I need a pair of good binoculars!

OK so you do not like bow hunters because they trophy hunt and complain about things? Welcome aboard! Enjoy!
-
Try getting out of your tree stand and hunting them. You might see it is much harder. Bow hunting is NO challenge, LOL. So gun hunters never wound a deer? That is a good one. And bow hunters always hit the deer and have a blood trail? You sound very young or at least inexperienced. I can not blame some of the complaints when bow season seams to be the one that always gets trampled on. You would know this if you where informed better and then this would not be one of your opening post. We all get upset at certain things, this apparently upset you. Hunters, as you will see if you read enough of our post, are a stubborn bunch and we like to tell everyone how we are right. Traditional are better than compound, compound better than crossbow, and the lowly gun lol. Tree stand vs stalking, public vs private etc. If we were not so passionate this site would have shut down a long time ago! O yea I am right and your wrong so HA. LOL just needed to add that. Come on back and join the discussion or chime in on other posts, its fun!

Could not have said it better myself. One of my hunting partners did it for wild boar in Penn. But he knew it was just for meat and was basically shopping with a gun. He wanted to test his fire arm and get some meat and experience a kill. Funny how they ran the boar past them over 3 times before he got a shot off. He ate all the meat and enjoyed every bit. He knows that it was NOT hunting. And he knows how I disagree with it. He is relatively new to hunting and was happy with the results of a perfect shot and meat for the family. His nephew was able to go and they enjoyed themselves. It just makes me wonder if fair chase will eventually become a thing of the past. Deer and CDW is just to scary right now IMO. Other spreadable diseases can cause other damage to deer. Just like any fence sometimes animals find a way out. Sometimes they do not have to get out to spread a infection! Unless you are a deer biologist or just do it for study I do not like "deer farms".
