  1. Ugly or not the AR does have it's place in the hunting woods. I happen to like both the traditional hunting rifles and the AR / black rifles. WNY- yeah I'm aware that spending more than a grand is common place for an AR. Plus optics and such. Money well spent in my eyes.
  2. The speeds these airguns are reaching are unbelievable. I saw a show where they were killing hogs and gators. They also were hunting deer with airguns. I don't think they were whitetails maybe key deer.
  3. It may sound crazy but I have to agree with some of what he's talking about. Obama has already started handing over this country to the U.N. Have you heard of the Small Arms Treaty that Obama and Clinton are trying to ram through? If this goes through other countries will have a say in our 2nd amendment rights. Civil war sounds crazy as all get out but ask yourself what will you do if the UN knocks on your door demanding you turn in your firearms ? We are headed for some very scary days if this man gets re elected.

    Anise Oil

So the 50 pounds of old donuts and bacon grease someone I know puts out isn't legal ? lol
  5. Great thread WNY ! I think it's good to refresh our minds eye of where the vitals are. Grow, I agree with Doewhacker and WNY femoral artery all the way.
  6. Years back we had a hunter wound a big doe on state land and she crossed onto our property. For whatever reason this hunter stopped tracking the deer when he came to our property line. Instead of asking permission to continue tracking he just left. So a few of us went out to see if we could find what he hit. At the time we didn't know what it was. Thanks to the snowfall we could see that it was bleeding very badly. We tracked it until sundown and came back the next morning. I finally caught up to it and I saw that she was missing one of her rear legs. I couldn't believe she was still alive with all the blood loss. I finally pinned her in down in a deep ravine with a stream. I stood there watching her thinking what I should do because none of us had a doe tag. The way she was still bleeding and the fact that she couldn't make it up the steep bank to get out of there I felt there was only one thing to do. So I put her down and we took both of her hind quarters to eat. At first I was going to take the whole deer but I figured I would leave the critters their cut. We contacted the Game Warden in our area and told him what we did. He said it wasn't a problem. We ate great the next 2 weeks back at the cabin !
  7. I've heard of quite a few hunters taking deer with this round. Personally I think it's a little light but thats just me. As for the AR platform for deer hunting, absolutley. As a matter of fact I just started saving up for one myself. They are very reliable, accurate, modular rifles which will do very well for hunting. As for caliber I'm probably going to get one in .308. You can get them in .243 or if you want some serious knockdown power you can get them in .450 bushmaster or .458 socom. I think the AR will be the choice of many hunters in the future.
  8. Mossy, I also shoot 180 gr out of my Win. 70 and I've found that for some reason my rifle doesn't like some premium bullets like the Federal Vital Shok. It shoots the Power Shoks better which I think are a little cheaper and it shoots the Hornady SST's pretty well. But like most people have already said here The Remington Core Lokt's and the Federal Fussions seem to shoot really well for me in 180 gr. You have to try different ammo and figure out which one your rifle likes. I like shooting 180 gr. because where I hunt it's mostly heavy timber or brush and I rarely shoot over 100 yards. I don't need to reach out that far so I'd rather have a little more knockdown power than accuracy. So I stick with the heavier bullet. Good Luck
  9. I put 1 in the chamber and 5 in the tube of my Marlin then I have a leather bullet holder thingy that holds 10 rounds. It's made to go on your belt but I just toss it in my backpack. Same thing when I carry my Winchester 70, 1 in the chamber 4 in the magazine and 10 in the leather holder in my pack. I knew a guy who used to bring more than one rifle into his hunting blind. I would ask wth for and he would say you never know I might run into some A- Rabs. I would make sure I wasn't anywhere near the loon.
  10. Romney/Ryan will be getting my vote. Barack Hussein Osama Bin Laden needs to go with a quickness. Anyone who thinks the UN should be able to disarm Americans needs to go bye bye !
  11. I had the same problem in a Long Island Walmart trying to buy .44mag ammo. The pimple faced kid asked me for my pistol permit. I then talked to a manager and explained that it was for a rifle and they sold me the ammo. This was some years ago.
  12. My first deer rifle was a Marlin 336 in .35 Rem. That was 22 years ago and it's still my first choice. Now with the new Hornady Flex Tip rounds you can reach out to 300 yards if you had to. But for a brush/woods gun .35 is a very solid choice. Like others have said the .35 is better than the 30/30. In my opinion I think the .35 rem is the ideal rifle for the woods and brush of NY.
  13. They aren't reporting on all the killings that are happening in Chicago right now. You know black on black violence. They only report white on black violence and when there is none to report they make it white on black violence like with Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin. If Zimmerman is a white guy then I'm Santa Claus.
  14. The liberals are already calling for the melting of all guns. It's just so interesting how these shootings are happening just before election time.
  15. Wow guys thanks for the congrats ! You are all too kind.
  16. There are a few towns out west who have laws on the books against killing bigfoot so it doesn't surprise me one bit.
  17. After an uneventfull opening day of Reg. season in 4R (Westkill,Greene County) I was late getting out the next morning and mad at myself for it. I didn't get to where I go into the woods until 6:55 am. As I eased my way in I started to see orange almost everywhere I looked. Now I'm furious at myself. Didn't see one hunter the day before but that day I had to weave my way through 6 different hunters to get to my pop up blind. I finally get to the blind around 7:35-ish settle in to the blind look off to my left across a big draw which we call "the bowl" about 200 yards out what do I see ? Another hunter. So now I'm having a full out arguement with myself. After calling myself a few choice words I decide I'm not moving it's too late and I liked where I was. So I took my orange vest hung it in a tree next to my blind and hoped the hunter would see it before he shot in my direction if a deer came between us. On top of all this the weather wasn't exactly the best, it was chilly but the forecast said it would warm up into the mid to upper 50's and the wind was gusting to 30-35 mph. I didn't bother to put out any of my normal spread of scents because of my late start except for my scent killer I sprayed down with at the truck and I had set up a few mock scrapes out in front of the blind a couple days before the opener. I had a dripper over one with Active scrape and the other 2 srapes I had poured Code Blue Buck urine in. I finally settled down and began scanning the woods . About an hour later I was enjoying some hot chocolate and I was looking out the right side of the blind and I thought I saw the hind end of a deer about 8 0 or so yards out. I looked with the binos and I didn't see anything so I chalked it up to one of those deer trees we all have seen many times. A few minutes later I looked the same way and this time thewre was no mistaking. I saw a deer headed straight towards me and I thought I could see antlers.I remember thinking how could this buck walk right past six hunters to get to me ? Then I picked up the binos and saw that it was a good buck and the antlers were over the ears. I didn't know exactly how big he was but I knew he was big enough to take. So now all hell breaks loose in my blind, hot chocolate goes flying and I'm fumbling around trying to get my .35 Marlin and my shooting stick. I finally get into a shooting position and he stopped walking and now is looking right in my direction. He was 80-85 yards so I doubt he heard or saw me in the blind but in my scope he looked like he was staring right at me into my soul. The only shot I had was a head on neck shot. I had the cross hairs right on his throat patch but I was concerned about the amount of sticks and brush between him and me. So I waited for him to make a move. The wind was still gusty and I could tell he was not relaxed and I thought if something happened that he didn't like noise or scent he was gone. So he turned broadside and started to head towards the left which would bring him out in front of the blind where the mock scrapes were. By now I knew he was a big deer and his antlers were respectable. So my heart is in my throat and the crosshairs are dancing around like Chaz Bono on dancing with the stars. I did what I knew I shouldn't of and took a shot through all that brush. He ran in a semi circle towards the left and my hopes and dreams were running with him into the next county (I thought). Then he stops ! Right out in front of the blind still about 80 or so yards. The only problem was he stopped behind a cluster of trees and the only thing I could see was his butt sticking out. Now I'm a mess so I take some deep breaths get my heart rate down (if that's possible) and my breathing somewhat under control. I put my crosshairs in just in front of the tree he was behind and waited until he started to move. He started to walk and as soon as he stepped into my crosshairs I squeezed the trigger. He hunched over and kicked. I knew I hit him now. He then does a 180 and starts booking right back to where I missed him. So now I'm worried about all those hunters I walked through getting a shot at this deer if he doesn't go down. I found an opening in the brush and waited for him to step into it. Just as I was about to pull the trigger he hits the ground hard. OMG ! he's down ! Ok Paul get a hold of yourself and make sure he doesn't get up. I stumble out of the blind and make my way towards the deer at a brisk pace. When I got there I saw he was done and I let out a Yeah Baby ! He was an 8 pt. with his left G3 broken. The butcher estimated him to be about 170 dressed making him over a 200 pound deer. What a great hunting trip this year.
  18. Second morning of Gun Season in 4R Westkill about 8:30 am I picked up movement out of the right side of my pop up blind 75-80 yards out. Looked through the binos and saw that it was a good buck. Fumbled around in the blind trying to get my rifle and my shooting stick, got him in my scope and had a head on shot. I saw a lot of little limbs and sticks so I waited until he turned broadside found what I thought was a hole in the brush settled the crosshair in right behind the shoulder and squeezed the trigger. He then ran in a semi-circle out in front of my blind still about 75 yards and stopped ! I must've hit a branch because I missed. The wind was gusting and I think he wasn't sure where the shot came from. Unfortunately he stopped right behind a cluster of trees and all I could see in my scope was his ass and tail. So I found a clear shooting lane right in front of him and waited for him to move. He started to walk the way he was headed and when I saw his chest fill my scope I squeezed and saw him hunch and mule kick. He spun around and headed right back to where I first saw him running low to the ground tail down between his legs. I knew I hit him yet it looked like he was going to run out of the county. So I found a nice clear spot where I thought he was headed to get another round in him. Just as I was going to shoot he piled up lick someone turned off his switch. He was down. That morning going in I was late getting to my blind and I had to walk through 5 hunters. Somehow this buck made it by all those hunters to me. I still don't know how that happened. I got him on DEP land. His G3 on his left side is broken off .
  19. Wooly I'm actually very glad you posted this because this is something that definitely left a mark and I wondered if other hunters had experienced something like it. I think if a hunter reads this thread he/she will have learned something valuable and the fact that we can use a negative experience and help other hunters avoid a similar situation is a good thing.
  20. One of our neighbors in Westkill told me he heard of a hog taken in the Liberty area. Not sure how true it was but that was the word last week.
  21. Very nice buck congrats ! You got him near Fleischmanns? I was over the other side of the mountain from you in Westkill. Are the people rebuilding from the damage caused by Irene ? I went to Prattsville and my jaw dropped. I felt so bad for those people, their homes were in shambles. I want to know why our fraud of a President Obama hasn't gone there to give these people funding to help them. I heard families got an average of $5,000 each. That's ridiculous considering we gave Haiti billions. Getting back on topic, Great job on a beautiful buck.
  22. Well this is a very interesting set of questions. While I have never done it myself I was present when my father did it so here goes : We were bow hunting on private land in Ulster county in a little town called High Woods. My Dad and I got back to the house around 4 pm. The house was set way back in the woods so basically once you stepped out of the front porch you were hunting and deer would come out of the woods and on to the lawn on a regular basis. So a doe came out, my Dad grabbed his bow and crept out the door drew his bow back and let it fly. The doe unfortunately jumped the string and the arrow hit her right in the head. The doe dropped immediately but didn't die. She kept kicking her legs but couldn't get up. So we waited a few minutes thinking she would expire but she didn't. My Dad didn't want to waste another arrow so he decided to use his knife. He cut her throat and what I saw after was something that I never want to see again and thats all I'll say. A word of advice if you have to use a knife don't cut the throat just walk up to the deer, judge where the heart is and sink it in with a firm quick plunge. This will kill the deer very quick and it's nowhere near as graphic or messy as cutting the throat.
  23. And yet you said it anyway. Must be a conspiracy.
  24. Since NY is not a reciprocity state other states will not honor a NY permit. I have a concealed carry permit in NC and one of the few states who don't reciprocate is NY of course. Every state I travel through from NC to NY honors my permit except NY or I would bring my handguns with me. NY will always be a liberal state so I hope this bill passes. But if I'm not mistaken even if the Federal law passes NY state still doesn't have to honor it. The Federal gov. can't tell a state what to do even though it would be a battle because of the 2nd amendment.
