Now that I got a black bear on camera . . .
Deerthug replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
Region 1 emailed me back telling me to call the citizen participation specialist in Region 4 where I hunt. So I will be calling them today. We shall see... Stay tuned! -
Two guys are out hunting deer, when the first guy says, "Did you see that?" "No," the second guy says. "A bald eagle just flew overhead," the first guy says. "Oh", says the second guy. A couple of minutes later, The first guy says, "Did you see that?" "See what?" the second guy asks. "Are you blind? There was a big, black bear walking on that hill over there." "Oh", said the second guy. A few minutes later the first guy says: "Did you see that?" By now, the second guy has had enough, so he says, "Yes, I did!" So the first guy says: "Then why did you step in it?" -credit goes to Roger Raglin.

I felt like a little kid on Christmas morning when I found it!

Well I cleaned out the freezer yesterday and found a couple of bags of venison still frozen and vacuumn sealed. So I decided to finish it off by making venison stew today for dinner. I browned the venison in vegetable oil. Fried up some onions, and peppers. Opened a jar of fresh tomato sauce and fried half a jar of sauce with some garlic. Added the meat with chopped carrots. Covered it with water and let it stew in there for an hour. Added the peppers, shrooms and onions and let it stew for another hour. Added some chili powder to give it some heat and voila.... YUM!

I just emailed DEC to get a clear answer. I will post when I get the answer. -
I was thinking of making a slow honey burn container as a scent or attractant to lure it in like this guy did . . . I know you can't use bait or dogs to hunt black bear in NY but you can use and carry up to 1.5 oz of bear lure/attractant. If you use 1.5 oz of honey and heat it up, would that be considered baiting? Any thoughts? Thanks.

DIY Camouflage lightweight Jumpsuit
Deerthug replied to Deerthug's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Yup! 4Y with bow 10/1-11/15 and 11/16-12/8 regular firearm. I would pee my pants if I shot this guy with my bow. Lol! -

Thanks! Yes very surprised! This past year we saw what we thought was bear scat on the other side of the proerty but we were not sure. This sighting confirmed it! -
I got this idea from dpete on AT to make a light weight camouflage jumpsuit to wear over shorts and t-shirt during warm weather hunting. Total cost was $9 for the white painter's suit and about $12 for 4 cans of spray paint. I'm pleased with the result. See for yourself: Also pulled a card on one of the cameras. These are two of some pictures we got before the batteries died: First black bear seen on the property Nice buck!

It seems like only yesterday when I started counting down. I can't believe that Oct 1st will be here before we know it. Got most of my stuff done around the house and I reseeded my lawn yesterday - Oy my aching back! Now I can concentrate on shooting my bow and perfecting my form every evening.

Too funny!

Staying local as well. Working on the lawn, yard, house etc. And getting mentally ready for the kids to go back to school for 2 days only to have 4 days off ....

Is anyone else having difficulty finding an open course?

Hmmm... Didn't think to look up there. Thanks Dinsdale. I will check it out. -
Is anyone else having difficulty finding an open course?
Deerthug replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
The boys are signed up for the Bayville course but I was hoping to find a weekend course sooner than end of October. -
I've been trying to sign my son and his friend up for a sportsman's education course since the beginning of July. Every course that I've found that fits our schedule gets filled by the time I go and try to register them. I called the one in Garden City at GC Tactical in the beginning of June for the July and the August courses but both were filled. I went to the Uniondale range today after seeing the 9/14-15 weekend course that was posted on Monday and I found out that it was filled the same day it was posted. Both are still showing as open but If they fill up aren't they supposed to remove it from the list? I've never experienced this before. There must be a huge infusion of new hunters that will be filling the woods this coming season. I was hoping to get them in before 10/1 so I can take them hunting opening weekend for turkey but it seems as the only weekend course available in my area is in Bayville for which I signed them, up but that's not until the end of October. I would consider some courses in Suffolk but they are in Mid september and during the week and late at night interfering with school sports and such. I guess the boys will have to wait until the end of October.

Wowza! -
I found this video last night on how to pack out and cape a deer without gutting it. Pretty interesting. I may try it on my next one. http://youtu.be/_7AHA2TyqHo

Good luck with the move and the new business Geno. I hope you stick around this site though. I just drove through Northern and Central NY on my way up to and from Niagara. During the drive I brought up the subject of moving up North with my wife. This has been a subject we've discussed for several years. She's all for it. Been so for a while. She can't stand living on LI. Too crowded and expensive. Seems like we are only working to pay taxes. The only thing keeping us here is family. Both sets of parents, sister and brothers all within 15 mins drive. I think once the kids are out of HS then it may become a reality. But that's not for another 5 years. By then my daughter will be done with college and my son will be done with HS. Guess I'll have to wait and see for now...

Welcome to the Forum and the brotherhood Tom. I too started hunting at a later age. I was 40 yo and have been hooked ever since.
