  1. Went to a friend's property in Walworth this am . Sat from 6:30 until 10 am and saw nothing . Checked my cams while I was there . Most sightings have been at dark hours so it's not such a great spot but it was only a 10 mile drive and I can't shoot anything from here .
  2. I'm not in as I figured being part of the staff I probably shouldn't be entered . Then again , I got skunked last year .
  3. Moog --- What Town in Wayne County was the bear sighting ?
  4. If you didn't get busted and the wind is right , use the same stand .
  5. Happy Birthday Joe ..... pay attention in school !
  6. The stand is about 400 yards south from the road by a corn field , 50 yards North of the neighboring fence line and the land owner owns both properties eat and west of the hedge row that the stand is located on . There are several directions where the culprit could approach . My son suggested calling the cops but someone told him that if it became too much of a hassle for the land owner , he might lose his hunting rights . So now my sons are considering using climbers there .
  7. The stands are well within the land owner's boundaries and his field that gets farmed as well as the huge lot where equipment gets stored so there is no question as a property dispute . Someone is just being an a-hole . Only a couple of Yote hunters have permission to hunt there and they have no reason to mess around as the father has used one of the stands to gun hunt from so it would be a disadvantage for either one to mess things up .
  8. Some low-life has screwed around with my son's ladder stands and removed and took the braces that goes from the ladder to the tree . The person / persons have also put up posted signs with no name on it on property that isn't theirs . My son showed the property owner a map of the area and he confirmed that the stands are on his property where he gave my sons permission to hunt but did not place any posted signs out . About a month ago the braces were removed and tossed on the ground . Whoever is doing the dirty deed doesn't have permission to hunt the property . I had made a suggestion to my son about placing a Black-Out camera facing the stand and put it high enough where it would be hard to reach and hidden but that never happened . He also had 2 ladder stands stolen last year
  9. Bummer . Left home at 5 am and was in my stand by 6:15 . Saw 3 doe at a bit over 100 yards making their way through a soybean field . Took a break at 11 am and got something to eat / drink and went to town to use a John . I was in my Pod Blind by 1 pm and stayed until 6 pm without seeing anything . Had about a 1/2 walk back to my vehicle and nothing in sight . Pulled cards from 3 trail cams to check out .
  10. Oct 1 -- Opening day . Yeeeehaaaaaaaa ! Heading for Geneseo in a few minutes . I plan to use a permanent stand in the am rather than spook everything on the way to the stand by the pond . I can use that for an afternoon stand . Hoping to see some deer action whether I get a shot or not . The sight of the 1st deer I see gets the heart pumping with the hopes that it will come near enough to get a shot . It would be sweet to fill a tag on opening day !
  11. I do the same . It prevents you from pulling the trigger prematurely . I shudder when I see someone in a Bow Shop or DICKs pull back on a bowstring and i'm thinking , "don't let go" .
  12. I barely remember things from when I was 50 ...........
  13. Sunrise will be at 7:08 here ...... Sunset 6:53 pm
  14. I have been shooting 30 -50 arrows a night at least 5 days a week for the past month . Less days earlier months . I practice from a 10' high treestand in the back yard at 4 different targets at 20 and 30 yards . Not everyone needs this but I find it enjoyable and it pays off .
  15. I am with Doc on the spot targets . Once the groups tighten up , shoot individual arrows at the spot targets . I am also with Jesse on the part that if someone hasn't practiced they shouldn't be out hunting . That's how accidents happen . It's BS to pick up a bow that you haven't shot a few days before season opens and go hunting . You should have been at it months ago . give someone tips 5 days before season starts . My tip would be don't bow hunt until next season . Not everyone can become proficient in a weeks time . Buy a crossbow . Takes bout 1/2 hour to become proficient according to a Horton Rep in an interview 4-5 years ago .
  16. I assume you are kidding but I recall a couple years ago being in the Geneseo walMart and a guy was buying some 20 ga and 12 ga slugs because he was borrowing a friend's shotgun and didn't know was ga it was . Gun season opened the following day .
  17. Here is the article from today's paper ................... Hunting fatality grim reminder Squirrel hunter’s death in Rush brings safety talk to forefront Victoria E. Freile and Leo Roth Staff writers Hunting safety in New York state has greatly increased in the last 50 years, with the incident rate per 100,000 hunters falling by more than 70 percent since the 1960s, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. Last year was the safest on record with a total of 19 hunting incidents and two fatalities. Of those, 14 were self-inflicted. A father and son, along with the father’s friend, were hunting in Rush on Tuesday evening when the son shot at what he believed to be a squirrel, according to Monroe County sheriff’s deputies. The shot instead struck and killed his father’s friend, Vienchaleun Kettavong, 71, who died at the scene. Jim Crittenden, a New York hunter safety instructor and past president and current treasurer of the Region 8 North Instructors Association, said no one kind of game See HUNTING, Page 9A Article Continued Below See HUNTING on Page A09 Hunting Continued from Page 3A hunting is more dangerous than the other. “I can’t say (squirrel hunting) is any more dangerous, it’s only dangerous if you’ve got people who aren’t being safe,” said Crittenden, of Henrietta. “Ninety-nine percent of all the incidents that happen every year are due to people who blatantly disregard the first four safety regulations that we put out to students.” Those are: always point the muzzle of a gun in a safe direction; treat every firearm as if it were loaded; identify your target and what lies beyond; keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire, Crittenden said. “It’s those last two that really get people in trouble when they disregard them,” he said. Tuesday’s hunting fatality occurred in a heavily wooded area, which is prime habitat for squirrels. Typically, squirrel hunters use a shotgun loaded with shells that contain pellets or a .22caliber rifle, Crittenden said. Shooting at a squirrel sitting high on a tree branch or one that is near the ground on a log or stump requires a safetyconscious hunter to determine what’s beyond his target, he added. “If you are using a .22 and shooting a squirrel in a tree, you have to make sure the backstop is the tree,” Crittenden said. “Because if the bullet keeps going and doesn’t hit the trunk, where is it ending up? It can go a mile and a half. If a squirrel is on a tree branch and you’re using a shotgun, those pellets come down fairly close, within 100 yards because the shot is at a high angle.” Police did not disclose the type of gun used in Tuesday’s incident by Phetsouvahn Kounnavong, a convicted violent felon who spent more than two years in state prison. Kounnavong was 24 when he was convicted of second-degree assault and attempted second-degree burglary in Wayne County in 2006 after he entered a home, stole personal items and assaulted a female resident, according to the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. He was sentenced to 2 1 ⁄ years and five years postrelease supervision and spent nearly two years in prison before he was released in June 2008, said DOCCS spokeswoman Taylor Vogt. Kounnavong violated his parole in mid-2012 and spent three more months in prison before he was again released in September 2012. Convicted violent felons are prohibited from possessing firearms under most federal and state laws. No charges have been filed in connection with the incident, said John Helfer of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. The incident is being investigated. Kettavong is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years and six grown children, all born in Laos, and many other relatives. He served in the Lao Republic Army before he spent six years in a concentration camp, followed by two years in a Thai refugee camp with his family before moving to upstate New York in 1982. His calling hours will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home in Livonia, Livingston County. Kettavong’s funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at the funeral home. 18. Lonsberry said on the radio that the shooter had a scoped rifle . How the hell do you look through a scope and think it's a squirrel ? Was it an accident ?
  19. Here is a pic of Phade shopping at WalMart
  20. I would think that the info on the Complaint Record and Permit Form that is put out by the DEC would be standard .
  21. I thought the stores had little chips in the camera boxes that would beep if someone left with one that hadn't been removed . Why have those big plastic tags on a pair of $50 boots but not a $100+ camera ?
  22. Dom --- The Deer Damage Permits that I have seen are for ANTERLESS deer only . That is stated right on page 1 of the Complaint REcord and Permit Form . I have never seen any where allowing the shooting of bucks . If the bucks have been killed , they have probably been poached . The farmers are responsible for the control of the permits and the reporting . Many of these Deer Damage Permits are from January thru September . The permit is void when the crop has been harvested .
  23. If you are talking about the Deer Damage Permits the Farmer has to apply for them . They are to be used for anterless deer only . Here is some of the information .
