Congratulations Eddie.

I try my best to match my scopes to the gun and cartridge it is chambered in and also to the game being hunted along with the terrain-habitat the hunts take place. These days my Deer hunting is done in big woods and shot distances that are what I would call short, under 100 yards most times. I like trying and shooting different calibers and rifle-handgun types, all of the ones I own with a good bullet and proper shot placement will get the job done. Hardly any stand hunting for me, I am on the move and like fast handling, light weight, shorter length rifles. The scopes on most of my woods Deer guns are also compact light weight of low power with large fields of view, straight 2.5X, 3X, and 1x4 and 1x5 variables. I do have large high powered scopes but they reside on varmint and target rifles for the most part, some of my rimfire rifles I use for Squirrels have some high powered scopes. A squirrel peeking around a tree trunk just exposing it's head makes for some precession shooting so some high power comes in handy for those kinds of shots. It is all about how you hunt, what you like and have confidence in to make the shot. Al

Homemade Tick Repellent
airedale replied to airedale's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
I know a couple of guys that make big batches up in a 5 gallon bucket, they dip their boots, socks and pants up to the knees in the permethrin solution, wring out the excess back into the bucket and hang everything on a line to dry. They will use a spray bottle for above the knees on their pants especially around the waist and will also spray their shirts hats and coats while on the line and let them air dry. Al -
Homemade Tick Repellent

I know the Gordon's brand is used straight on farm animals and is safe and I know some people use it diluted on dogs. I use permethrin cattle tags on my dog's collars instead of and like a flea collar for quite a few years now, any flea and tick problems vanished. Al People also ask Can you use Gordon's Permethrin 10 on dogs? Benefits: Effective insect control on animals - Permethrin 10% can be used on dairy and beef cattle, sheep, goats, swine and poultry. Plus, it is labeled for effective control of insects on horses and dogs. Can you spray Permethrin 10 on dogs? Martins Permethrin 10% may be used to treat dogs over 12 weeks of age for fleas, ticks, mange, and lice (do NOT apply permethrin products on cats). Per the product label, you should mix 8 oz. in 12. 5 gallons of water, which would break down to 0. -
A quick video showing how to make a spray similar to Sawyer's for a whole lot less money. I use this formula and it has worked well. Al

Another kind of off the wall competition is rod and reel distance casting tournaments, with specialized equipment the distances achieved are amazing. Al

Never knew there were flight competitions. My first home had large agriculture fields off my back yard, close to 500 yards deep. I had both a rifle and archery range set up there and we did a little archery shooting to see how far our arrows would fly out of the then new compound bows compared to our old recurves. Entertaining for sure and I will say the over a mile record was safe. Al

The Royal Palm Turkey poults are coming along nicely and so are the Geese. Al

Learned something new, I have this pokeweed plant growing all over the place on my property and especially so along my pasture fences where birds who apparently eat the berries crap when perched on the fence wire. I have seen no evidence of any animals eating the plant itself. I have spent a lot of time mowing and using a weedeater on this stuff to get rid of it to no avail. Come to find out the leaves on this plant are very good eating when properly prepared, a popular Southern dish called poke salad which I have heard of is supposed to be delicious. There is a bit of work getting prepared for eating as there are some poisonous compounds that have to be leached out. There are plenty of youtube videos with recipes and instructions on how to safely prepare for eating, will give it a try sometime and maybe I will like it. Al

Shed Hunter finds 277" Dead Head in Minnessota

Wow!, That is some rack for sure. Al -
I still use them, Easton Gamegetters and XX75s in 2016s and 2018s for the bows I shoot, they are really good arrows for what I do. Al

Looks like a Luger to me. Al

Yes it is something you have to get used too, seems like all the newer stuff saw wise has one of those buttons. Al

One of my favorites is the Milwaukee "Hatchet", it is really a dinky electric chainsaw, I use this little guy for all kinds of chores around the farm. Very small, light and compact and will actually cut some good size limbs, especially nice for doing blind and stand work clearing small trees and branches. Al

Back in my Coon hunting days there were many times I would be in the middle of big woods alone in the middle of the night, some of the sounds I heard would make the hair on the back of my neck stand up. One of the spookiest is a Porcupine screaming during their mating season. Al

Don't know if it is the same one from last year but either way there is a Gray Fox out back in the pasture again mousing, took a quick photo out the kitchen window that was not the best. Al

There are far more tube magazine rifles chambered in 35 Rem than anything else, in this day and age of litigation for just about everything under the sun I would think there would be a warning on the box not to fire those cartridges in a lever action if there was a safety problem. Powder Valley has got a bunch of these European large rifle primers in stock, 5000 going for $499, that is the cheapest I have seen. Most do not need that many but two or three guys splitting them up is an option. Unis Ginex Large Rifle Primer (5000 ct) SKU: UG553N

Site seems to be back. Thank you!
airedale replied to New York Hillbilly's topic in General Chit Chat
It is not enough that they now have a forum that is setup the way they wanted, there are some of the malcontents that also want to see this site fold. As far as I am concerned this site is the best it has ever been and has one of the biggest and best hunting contents on the web with plenty of folks going through and reading it every day. It would be even better if the trolls would just stay away and bask in the utopia they always professed to want instead of popping in here and stirring the pot and keeping things festering. Al -

Occasionally?? Just about any time I come on this site you are here, for someone that despises the place you can not seem to stay away which you should be doing! Why don't you mow a lawn or post something useful instead of coming here and stirring the pot. Al -
My only complaint with this 1911 is I had to get the metal detector out to find the spent cases. Al

Does anyone still hunt woodchucks anymore?
airedale replied to Doc's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
It is the same everywhere, of all the game I have hunted Woodchucks rank right at the top. Long range precision shooting and stalking with every kind of weapon from handguns to long range rifles and archery. If I had a good place to hunt them I would go in a heartbeat. I have one living under a shed on my back lawn, he has made it three years now dodging my dogs and gets a free pass because they are so rare to see these days. I have the consolation of hunting them in the good old days when there were thousands of them, the memories are still strong and that will have to do. Al
