I see there was a fellow that broke the state Largemouth record this year also.

A buddy of mine will be picking me up and we will be heading to the show this morning, a good day for it as this 80 plus degree weather will be putting a damper on my hunting, looking at the upcoming forecast for the next week she looks to be a bit too hot for me. Al

Hey Paula there is no better tune up for Deer season than hitting the timber and still hunting for Squirrels, good luck young lady. Al

Congrats, That equipment may be vintage but it was top of the line stuff in it's day, while they are a bit heavier than today's stuff and a bit slower they would still be very effective in the hands of an archer that knows how to use them. I have no experience with Golden Eagle equipment but I know it is of very good quality. As for the bottom bow, it looks to be a Bear Alaskan, it was their top of the line bow back in the day and I have one hanging here in my gun room, I still get the old gal out every now and then and sling a few arrows. All of my archery equipment is of the same era, at this stage of the game it is plenty good enough for me. Al

I think your self diagnosis is pretty much on the money. Al

Squirrel number one, The season is long so I will only take one per day, this guy instead of being eaten he will be going into the freezer intact and will be used as a training aid for my young Airedale "Ruff". When I am done he will be able to associate those Squirrel tracks he finds in the woods with what is actually making them. I always try to use real animals when training instead of bottled scents. Al

Freaks of Four Seasons.

Man that is pretty messy, wonder if there is any pain involved. Al -
I just want to give a quick report on these Ruag Large Rifle primers, I have tested quite a few handloads made up using them and I am happy to say their reliability has been 100% and the accuracy has been as good as what I get with American brands. So if you see them available do not be afraid to buy and use them. Al

Man, that is a big slab for sure! Al

It is kind of a pain in the ass but I figured it out and got mine. I believe you still can go to a license issuing agent and get your permits. Al

Tested the 541 with three different brands of ammo high and standard velocity and everything grouping great. That is one thing I love about this 541S, it is not real picky with ammo like some rifles I have. When the leaves come down so I can see something I will be ready. Al

Live From The Woods 2024-2025 Edition
airedale replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Deer Hunting
With all the leaves still on the trees and underbrush visibility is very limited, early in the Squirrel season it is tough spotting them much less getting a shot especially with a 22. Usually, I hunt them with a shotgun early in the season for that reason, but I am hitting the woods with my pup and want to introduce him to gunfire with something that is easy on the ears. I don't think gun shyness is going to be any kind of problem with this guy, he was outdoors with me today on the shooting range while I was testing some 22 ammo and he was all good. Al -
That is a heck of a deal, those safes can be a real bear to move. Back when I worked in my buddy's gun shop he sold Browning safes, they were massive and heavy, it would take 4 guys to make a delivery to our customers. Congrats to you and your Dad. Al

Am I surprised? In today's world Hell no! Al

Every now and then I make a purchase of a highly hyped product that exceeds my expectations. This little Garmin Xero Chronograph is one of those purchases, it is so simple and convenient to use compared to my Pact. I just love the thing. I use it every time I hit the range and it provides me with much eye opening data on what kind of ammo I am producing. One of the best purchases for me that I have ever made, a triple thumbs up. Al

Red Stag hunting in New Zealand, most of the photos of Red Stags I have seen their antlers resemble those of an Elk. Lost for words on this guy, what a set of antlers!! Al

Look Beyond Trump and Harris
airedale replied to airedale's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I play the hand I am dealt, Trump is the Republican nominee and he is who I will vote for and certainly not for any candidate whose party is for everything I listed above. I would have to be a complete moron to do so, I will take my chances! Al -
Potential Squirrel Dog?
airedale replied to Northcountryman's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
Got my pup Ruff into the woods today looking for a Squirrel but things were slow, saw one Chipmunk and the mosquitoes were fierce, that being said I liked everything I saw with this pup. He has his nose down and he is ranging out and hunting, have trained a lot of pups and I like what I am seeing with young Ruff. Al -
The media likes to make this election all about Trump and Harris but do not get pulled into that narrative, the big picture is about party policy and party platform, that where the focus should be and which party is looking out for your interests!! From where I sit the Democrats are doing everything in their power to ruin my life and lifestyle! Listing just few things that do not sit well with me. Let's start with some law and order, cashless bail, defunding police, riots and violence. Open borders, letting anyone vote, welfare state, big government, high taxes, over regulation, inflation, socialism, communism, and who gets the bill? They want to ban oil, internal combustion engines, cars and motorcycle, boats will be affected, ban coal, ban burning wood, ban propane, it is what I use to heat and cook with! Anti farming and over regulating, Animal rights radicals, anti meat eating Anti hunting and fishing, anti trapping, anti firearms, anti traditional ammunition and ammunition period! There is plenty more but my fingers are getting tired from typing all the crap various groups of knuckleheads in the Democrat party are trying to pull they are not our friends! Little by little like death from a 1000 cuts they are ruining this country and turning it into a shithole, the people better take their blinders off and pay attention! Al

One of the things I find interesting is the game and techniques hunters in other parts of the world use. Youtube provides a view into hunting for just about every game animal on the planet. I got some education watching videos of Deer hunting in Europe, they like to call it stalking and they have a small size Deer over there called a Roe Deer that bark when alarmed. They have an interesting technique for hunting those little guys, "calling" and it is much the same as the way we use varmint calls for predators. They will set up a stand on the edges fields that border forests and call, some of those Bucks come on the run like a Coyote to a dying rabbit call. Looks like a lot of fun and the kind of hunting being a varmint hunter, I would enjoy. They also have a nifty set of antlers, the racks are not big but they look nice.

Another update, I got those Sierra bullets seated just a little deeper and after the Turkey left I ran them through the rifle and they shot beautifully, I usually do not try so many different bullets but have the 6.5X300 and the 6.5 PRC I wanted a good selection to evaluate. This 6.5 Creedmoor is making a big impression, 4 different loads with different bullets and powders and they all shot so good. Like Ron Spomer said "this may be my new favorite rifle'! 100 gr Barnes averaged 3150 FPS loaded with the new Winchester StayBall 123 Hornadys averaged slightly over 2700 FPS loaded with Varget and those new Peterson small primer cases 140 Sierras and the 143 Hornady EDLs averaged 2550 FPS loaded with Varget Al

Hit the range and I am as happy as a pig in shit, the Howa is laying them in there putting up ragged holes with everything I am trying. The 140 Sierra bullets were seated just a tad too long, they were bumping the lands when put into the chamber, their shape is not quite as streamlined as the Hornadys so I came into the gun room and seated them down just a bit. The break in the action was needed as after I touched off the last shot here come the goofy Turkeys on to the range, I will have lunch and hopefully they will be back in the timber so I can test the Sierras. DEC Expands Bald and Golden Eagle Conservation Study
airedale replied to Steve D's topic in NYS DEC News and Annoucements
If you do not belong to the NRA or Gun Owners of America you should, they will keep you informed on what the sneaky Democrats are up to. Al September 10, 2024 Washington, D.C. – Last week, Gun Owners of America (GOA) filed public comment with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in opposition to their proposed rule to ban the use of lead ammunition of certain public lands, starting with this upcoming fall/winter hunting season. The proposed rule, which was first announced in early August, is the fourth attempt by anti-gun and anti-hunting activists in the Obama-Biden-Harris administrations to ban lead ammo on public lands in the last nine years. While the Obama-Biden attempt to ban lead ammo and lead based fishing tackle was reversed by President Trump, the Harris-Biden Administration has now initiated its third lead ammo ban, prompting sportsmen to voice serious concerns with their lawmakers in Washington. In its comments, GOA argues that USFWS has no statutory mandate to effect such a ban, and they highlight the complete lack of any compelling and statistically significant evidence that suggests the presence of lead ammo is detrimental to wildlife or human populations. NOTE: these comments do not discuss or extend to the existing ban on lead ammunition for waterfowl hunting, which has been in place for several decades. Read GOA’s full public comments here. Mark Jones, GOA’s National Director of Hunter Outreach, issued the following statement: “As a Certified Wildlife Biologist® with 32 years of experience in wildlife management, I can say that the claims made by USFWS are not supported by peer-reviewed scientific literature. In turn, it’s obvious that this proposed rule is simply meant to frustrate and further disincentivize hunters and target shooters by making it harder and more expensive to participate in the shooting sports. GOA is proud to oppose this rule and will continue to push back on Capitol Hill should it go through.” Aidan Johnston, GOA’s Director of Federal Affairs, added: “The Harris-Walz campaign can sell all the camo hats it wants, but that doesn’t change the fact that Kamala Harris has tried to ban lead ammunition and fishing tackle every year for the last three years. A Harris-Walz Administration would mean another four years of rogue federal agencies criminalizing the actions of sportsmen to suppress our nation’s proud traditions of hunting and fishing.” GOA spokesmen are available for interviews. Gun Owners of America is a nonprofit grassroots lobbying organization dedicated to protecting the right to keep and bear arms without compromise. GOA represents over two million members and activists. For more information, visit GOA’s Press Center. –GOA–
