I Got Bit...ignorant dog owners are out there

Glad you are ok. I have zero tolerance for biting dogs and irresponsible owners. See that the dogs are put down and sue the sh!t out of her. -
Would deer be put off by caged dogs barking 24/7?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Core's topic in Deer Hunting
I can understand that. Why would a deer be scared of a cat that small...lol. Just kidding. -
My first introduction to shootign a bow was through Boy Scouts. Simple fiberglass long bows. I believe even the arrows were fiberglass and if memory serves, heavy as hell. we shot targets and then what amounted to a 3D course. The 3D course was pretty simplistic. rubber blunt tipped arrows and the targets were plastic milk jugs suspended on a rope between two stakes pounded in the ground. we walked through the woods and shot from predetermined points at each station. That was fun. I didn't care too much for the big round ring targets in the open fields. I started bow hunting right after high school. My cousin that I gun hunted with my whole life started and he suckered me in. It basically gave us a longer season. we were the only 2 out of our hunting group of 8 that bow hunted. It seems like a hundred years ago. I am not sure were even got an extra tag back then. Something sticks in my head about our regular season tag being good for either sex but if you filled it you didn't have one during regular gun season. maybe I dreamed that.

Would deer be put off by caged dogs barking 24/7?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to Core's topic in Deer Hunting
I have shot sporting clays at a gun club and had deer laying within 30 yards of a shooting station and never budge when the shootign started. I honestly believe they can become desensitized to things like that and the dogs. That sound of the dogs is just a sound. it hasn't been linked to a threatening situation becasue they aren't in the woods and chasing the deer. have a buck wander in the woods during the rut that has been chased by barking dogs and you may get a different reaction to the barking. -

Well last night 9 bucks walked into the field. This guys was leading the parade and appeared to be the largest. I did my best with the cell phone camera through my spotting scope..lol This 10 pointer got me excited. The smallest in the field were year old 6 pointers. Again, sorry for the sideways pic. I freaking hate posting pictures here -
I did at some point last year.

let me make it simple. January 15, 2013 is the line in the sand date. if your permit was ORIGINALLY issued prior to that then you have to re-certify by January 31st 2018. if you permit was ORIGINALLY issued after that date then your issue date plus 5 years is the date you must recertify by

Mine is filled out and ready to be mailed as well.

Ever had a run-in while hunting?

Q: I have a pistol permit, may I carry my handgun while bowhunting?A: No. While bowhunting during a special bow season, you may not possess a firearm of any description. That is right off the DEC webiste -

I get why THEY think that but let's be honest. if you can legally carry a pistol you can have it loaded in the car with you on your way to hunting and on your way home. Since you can't hunt from a vehicle I guess you could make a case that sitting in you car and having lunch in the middle of a bow hunt isn't hunting so you could have it then. You can't carry it in the stand in the morning if you have your bow with you but if you leave your bow in the car in the afternoon you can climb into the same stand for the afternoon and have it on you then. All this and having it make you more likely to become a poacher? That is NY liberal logic. -

I wonder how much social media and the decline of the traditional hunting camps have on topics like this? The person to person interaction and the social interdependent nature of the hunting camps VS the posting pictures for "likes" from folks that are barely known. I see more and more hunters that take on the sport as a solo event or with one close buddy. I know growing up and hunting with our party of 8-10 guys there was always a good spirited competition on who got the bigger or most (insert animal in season here). It wasn't a life or death competition but it was for bragging rights until you were dethroned. -

I can think of 3 occasions I wish I had a fire arm with me. First was a very early Morning that my cousin and I were backed back into his truck by a group of coyotes in a very thick and tight cedar swamp. They were close. Second was a run in with a very aggressive German Shepard. luckily I made my stand ladder before he got to me. The third was on a property I hunt only a couple times during NZ ML and early rifle. I came across 3 patches of pot planted in the woods. plastic mesh to keep the animals away, miracle grow packages and watering buckets. Kind of felt naked standing there around a grow operation and no gun. Luckily it had been harvested within the week prior. (so the State Police told me when they came in response to my call) -

I guess for me that "excitement" is what keeps me coming back. Nothing like the rush of seeing that buck you have been playing tag with all season coming down the trial like you thought and hoped he would. My wife use to ask me, while we were driving and I'm shouting out "look at the deer" , "Why do you get so excited seeing them"? My response always is, when I stop gettign excited to see them is when I stop hunting. I like having to try and calm myself to make the shot. Buck fever? hell no!! I get excited even when shooting at a doe. lol -
only know it because it's my old stomping grounds...lol

Over millions of years of evolution, Doc. that has been the story. Why would it be some dirty secret to mention it? -
The Psychology Behind the Quest For Trophy Racks

It sure does. Some folks stay at one stage longer or permanently and some move through a stage more quickly. This is written about in many articles. This one is one I was familiar with. http://charliealsheimer.com/ca/articles/5stages.html -
The Psychology Behind the Quest For Trophy Racks

yes. Where I am. 2 doe tags on first draw. ALWAYS guaranteed 2 in late draw. 2 signed over. That is 6 not even getting into bow ML either sex and antlerless. Then add using you regular season buck tag during lat season and there is a possibility of 9 and never even have to shoot a buck -

Stubby, serious question. How many years have you been hunting and how many deer do you estimate you have taken? -
I am really enjoying this thread. Thank you to everyone for sharing.

first 11 acres isn't that much to hunt on. Make sure you try to maintain a workign relationship with the neighbors. Recovery rights are NOT guaranteed. I agrees with the folks here. Enough time has taken place to pull the stand down. Return the camera to the owner and leave a note at the tree. POST the property and read up to do it by the letter of the law. Be honest with the neighbors about your intentions to prosecute trespassers. Give the neighbors your number and discuss how to contact each other to arrange recovery. DO this in plenty to time prior to the season.
