  1. So since it can't be "all" better to do nothing? For an analogy, the local deer population is like a pile of dry sand. keep pulling from the edges and the top will come down. As effectively as sticking your shovel right in the center of the pile? No but it will seek a level. So we pull from the property we have access or ownership of. Remember the movie Field Of Dreams? If you build it they will come. Deer will gravitate to the best food and cover available. Does especially. It kind of sucks to me because one area, 8H, is one of my close and very productive spots. I have another in 8N. Both with the best potential for seeing really good bucks. It's gonna kill me to be in a stand and not be able to take a shot on a nice buck. Personally I would have rather they did this where the most impact could have been made. first week of Regular season.
  2. A shameless plug here but my involvement in the QDMA has opened my eyes to what I thought I knew and how I went about thing along this line. I know it is tough to build interest in managing a property if you don't own it, but if we all took matters into our own hands with some good boots on the ground knowledge of that property we can do what DEC can't or won't. manage the take for the property. not seeing deer with good habitat, don't fill them. don't have enough tags to remove the deer your census shows, invite a youth or a vet or a couple buddies in for a doe hunt.
  3. Eliminate DMP in those areas and that will entice more public access. I personally know farms that get them and regardless of the rules they are used by family, deer are shot and no recovery attempts made, or more than two taken by DMAP hunters.
  4. I think that most of us would agree that any step that they can take should be taken to achieve a good and balanced population....(big caveat here)....if they based it on sound biology, an accurate census and in the best interest of the game. I can't find anything that convinces me that one of those three are met though.
  5. This really isn't new news as a possibility. I think they even talked about it as a possibility in the last 5 year management plan or survey.
  6. I really think that is the wrong approach and what has these areas in the position they are in (As well as limited access). The doe take should be driven by population and the ability of the habitat to sustain them. If the property is over populated I believe as stewards of the resource we should be taking them if it is called for. Donate the venison. it costs you very little to do it. Basically gas to get it to a participating processor.
  7. The units listed in Region 8 are some of the highest buck density areas in the state, with some of the best bucks in the state.
  8. If they really wanted to take a number out of the referenced Western NY WMU's they could have come up with any number of options that would yield better results.
  9. Personally I this making the DMAP process easier is counter productive to what is the true problem in the areas with the population issues. Land access. All the tags and pull them out of your backside programs won't change anything g u less you can get to them.
  10. The DEC really doesn't have anything to do with the new bills that are out there.
  11. So what is the solution and what have each of us done to help push for it. And no. Bitching about it doesn't count
  12. I would love to see their staffing contributes to directly based on the fines handed out. Their budgets aren't funded that way but they could be. If people got involved and pushed for a change.
  13. I like in person permission rather than letters if you can pull it off. Go to the county clerk's office. they will have the new owner's info
  14. I use to ask them for ID until I found out yesterday on here that it is unethical to shoot a turkey at any yardage other than exactly 20. The print it to small with these old eyes to see it at 20 yards. Guess I have to bring a spotting scope with me on a turkey hunt now.
  15. We have to get you new friends...lol. The ones I see posted aren't like that.
  16. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/31416.html First bullet •A person may not fish for a species (even if immediately released) during the closed season for that species on a given water. Fish caught during the closed season must be unhooked and released immediately. They may not be handled for any other purpose, including taking a photo.
  17. So those of you pushing for a very stiff law that would deter poachers, what have you done to get it pushed through the system?
  18. I read some of these comments and just have to shake my head.
  19. Baby steps folks. These bills are far better than we have. Don't let wanting more stop you from taking one step forward
  20. So you break down in front of my house and come knock on the door to get help and are carrying concealed. I didn't invite you so you are trespassing. No signs needed any more per your scenario. Felony and you lose your guns
