How many deer have you shot & not recovered?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to nybuckboy's topic in Deer Hunting
I don't think you could be more wrong. Just by the shear number of gun hunters the odds are that gun hunters wound more. If you want to talk about percentage of deer wounded to hunter numbers I woulnd't know but by just numbers of wounded deer...gotta be gun hunters -
I believe with a NY permit you can carry in Alaska, Vermont and I think Arizona. Rochester Parsonal Defense has a combined class to get he Utah and Florida Non-Resident Permits. That combined class gives the most states. Florida has a shooting requirement but I think you get an exemption if you hold a valid home state permit.

Should the .410 be legal for deer?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to 13BVET's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
now here is a wrinkle to the law. I know one old timer up north and he used his .410 as a deer and small game gun. It was an old heavy barreled single shot. For deer he put (IN NOW WAY DO I CONDONE OR SUGGEST THIS) in a .41 mangum pistol cartrige. Now I don't know about you but that is one trigger I would never squeeze. He swore the DEC didn't have a problem because he was using a legal round for deer. -

A .22lr is a rimfire but there are many many 22's that are centerfire. even some .17's -

I think the old regulation was .25 caliber and above centerfire. I don't think the .243 was a legal deer gun the way the old regs were. Drives me nuts the inconsistencies in the regs. I wish they would get into the 21 century. No rifles....oh wait you can use a pistol chambered in .300Winmag...can't use a .410 shotgun but can use a .17caliber centerfire round. -

Big no on the .410. I own one and have shot slugs through it. It shoots them great. I just don't think there is enough energy there. (I am not a fan of the 20.ga though. wouldn't hunt with one for deer if it were given to me) I have no idea who this clown of a biologist is but he doesn't know his a$$ from a whole in the ground. The .410 is a shotgun...period. It's barrel diameter is measured in inches and is the only shot gun that is. It has nothing to do with barrel diameter it has to do with the shell casing construction. Here is a trivia for you guys and I know many will know this. How did they come up with the guage number for a shotgun? 28,20,16,12, 10? It is the number of lead balls the diameter of the barrel that equals a pound of lead. 12 balls of lead in that pound, it was a 12 guage -

Absolutely!. I could have bought a stick to keep my hard bow case filled instead of my new bow, would have done the same thing this season and cost a lot less..lol -

I was with you right up to that point. Quoting speed is really not that accurate. I wouldn't even worry about speed until you have you final set up figured out..if then. Any of the modern bows on the market today will do what he wants. My bow is only shooting 276 pfs but I am throwing a VERY heavy arrow. (don't want to get into the spped vs weight discussion). Bottom line a 50# longbow will kill any north American game. You have to pick one that feels good and you have confidence in shooting. By the way. you didn't mention price range. With new models going to be coming out and some guys that like to change bows every year a new model might not get you the best bang for your buck. -
I think he'll get the idiot award lets vote
Culvercreek hunt club replied to hb270deermanager's topic in Deer Hunting
Another bit of advice. Make sure your property is LEGALLY posted. If not there will be a "notification" that has to be made on the first offense. If it is posted correctly (right size posters, distance between them, 2 @ corners facing each way) the first time is a punishable offense. -
I was all on board until I saw the prices...lol. If I am going out of pocket for that much cash I am going to be able to drive it.
-
I didn't get the kit. Actually the best price I could find on the kit was $200 so I went for the deal on the stuffer itself. Arrives on the 29th. Here is hoping that next week provides something to use it on...lol

Ok if you are hung up on the order of operations and don't want to see the point I was making, let;s try this. The DEC doesn't tell you that you have to carry a ruler fishing but puts a 12" minimum on bass in many waters. you don't have to carry one but you still have to abide by the regulation....Again...minutes are not going to get your chops busted by the DEC but you are leaving yourself open to issues if they are in a mood.
-
I thought it was spot on. a tool is required to determine if a regulation is met.
-
You aren't required to carry a ruler either but you had better make sure at least one spike is 3" if you only have a buck tag and better make sure the point is at least 1" if you are in an AR area.

I think they anticipate the "sunrise and sunset" will be stretched. If they made it the half before and after....that would probably get stretched then. Botom line, just like any other reg, the enforecement will be at the discretion of the ECO. It may come down to whether his eggs were cooked to order that morning or not..lol

Extra rounds and hot coffee. I think you might be on to something
