  1. If as criminal is firing a gun that is stolen, why would they care if the serial number was imprinted on the casing? It won't lead to him. Lead back to the one that originally purchased it......and thye probably already know the gun is stolen if the owner was responsible. I do not see how this process could effect any crime. It could be used in the crime of passion type, but how much of that is really out there. I don't see it being the majority of gun crime.
  2. They are proposing 4 days during the week. How many do you think will be involved in that season? Personally, except for Thanksgiving week I don't get to hunt during the week. I won't even know they are out there.
  3. Grow....I think you are missing the point on the doe tags. They want better control on the harvests and I agree with this approach. It should help stop what you have seen in your area. The does get harvested by the area, not a tag that can be used anywhere in the state. I evvision then issuing more doe tags to make up for the bow/ml loss of harvest but it is more easily controled. say an area get low on populaton for what ever reason. they just don't issue tags for the area the next year and no does are taken with bow or ML. The way it stands in 8N now the rebound of the population will take longer since there is still harvest of does down there now. I aslo don't see how everyone is saying that they are taking days away. they add 15. allow 3 days (Sat, Sun, Mon) in that for youth, allow another 4 for the early ML (Tues, wed, thurs, Fri). That is still an add of 8 days if you didn't want to hunt in the woods with them. And let's be honest. there are people walking around in full camo in all the gun seasons now. I haven't seen the carnage that some are forcasting.
  4. Are you saying the proposal says no magnificaton on the sights or that is your preference?
  5. There is a lot of support out there for the one buck only. Personally I wouldn't care if I only got a chance at one buck.....as long as I get doe tags. Not sure how this will all play out though. I am worried about guys who live in low or no doe areas.....how will the loss of the either sex or antlerless tag effect their season. I can't see it having a big impact on me since my hunting lands are in high percentage areas for permits. I think they better put some brain power into this before they move on it. Not everyone is able to travel to higher density areas or has access to land in these areas.
  6. Yeah...I am notsure how they will handle the antlerless tag for bow muzzleloader. Typically NY goes about any restructuring slowly......sometimes at a snail pace. They did make a comment in that report that they would preferto handle all doe harvest through the permit system. They said in areas where dp's drop in issued numbers. They see an increase in bow ml hunting and harvest. Guess we take the does with them when we don't draw tags. I have to agree with you on the youth hunt. I have mixed feelings. On one side I think it may make for a great experience and offer a better opportunity for them to harvest...thus getting them hooked. On the other hand is it making their expectations unrealistic and not giving them a flavor of what this is allabout anyway......not sure....almost seems like they are making this little league where you don't keep score because you don't want the losers to feel bad. I spent 8 years following my father around the deer woods before I was old enough to hunt.....I learned a lot then....especially that the most important thing about hunting wasn't the harvest.
  7. Congrats John. Best feeling in the world. Enjoy every day and every sleepless night because they go by to quickly
  8. I have used an ultra knock for years. I never noticed the sound you mention....but then again I am damn near deaf anyway...lol. It is on my list of items during this summer tune up. I will be switching to a loop. The only part of te ultra knock I did like was it awlays could be hooked up without looking and it worked great for forcing the alignment of the peep. Any issues with a loop along those lines?
  9. I am betting the only way you would hunt ML in 8N during that would be if you had applied for doe tags in that area. The plan said it was for population control and they want that to happen throught the permit process
  10. The youth hunt is 3 days....the ML is 4 days and does not even include a weekend.(as proposed). I am betting most of us wouldn't even know the ML is going on unless you are lucky enough to be able to hunt during the week. Part of me thinks I would like to see the neighbors doing it a little to chase the bucks over to the areas I can hunt...lol
  11. If they followed the lead from the NZ you would be losing a week of pre-rut/rut hunting. That would really get the majority of bow hunter up in a hackle
  12. From what I read they don't want hunting going any deeper into December and the shortening of gun had a high percentage of negative response. I would rather see this where it is than take any archery at the end of the archery season....that is my favorite time to bow hunt. They are anticipating 16,000 participants in the youth gun. I don't think 3 days will ruin it. I bet the ML seaon doesn't happen. I probably wouldn't participate for just filling of doe tags. I'd rather be bow hunting for the buck during that time.I wouldn't stir up the woods for the does at that point.
  13. I guess I kind of envision them saying if you have Doe permits for an area you can fill them in that time frame with the muzzleloader. that would take care of what areas get hunted. Kind of just like we do now during archery season. An nice to see the use of the phrase "same as other bow hunting equipment" so much in their report
  14. Just cleaned mine this weekend. Lowered the deck....pulled 6 cotter pins and slid it out. Stood it up and had at it with the pressure washer. 1/2 hour from start to finish and it was sparkling clean. Perfect opportunity to inspect it nad the belts and chnage the blades to a sharp set.
  15. Ditto, Except I wouldn't mind an early ML season. The mandatory reporting is key in my view. If you want another license you have to produce your used and unsed tags from last year. I have to believe with the bar codes it would be a pretty easy programming feat to input the data.
  16. If you want to bait fish I suggest using a three way swivel. The line down to the weight should be smaller test so if it hangs you don't lose your rig. I have used this for bait and for adding weight for trolling close to the bottom or weed tops. The drop sinners are pretty cheap and keeps you from losing the main rig
  17. I wouldn't think the "ccol down period" would really fall into their thoughts. One that is bent on reacting like that could get a long gun in muuch shorter time. I don't mind waiting a reasonable amount of time.....I'd even consider 6 months fair if it gave us the ability to carry in the country.....not just state by state. (or group of states). I do agree with some on here that the gun laws do seem to have little real effect o the crime. Here in Rochester they can be had very easily. Unfortuantely the same groups that seem bent on hampering the average guys ability to carry are the same ones that want to hold the criminals hands....dump tons of money in failed rehabilitation and turn them back on the streets to commit crimes again. I would buy the checks and waiting periods if they would be willing to stiffen up the penalties on the violent gun offenders. kill someone....death .....use a gun in commision of a crime., any crime...life in a box (not the current country clubs). until the penalties are so stiff that it is a deterrant........no law will have an effect
  18. In my view the current laws....(in my county anyway) don't seem to even approach reasonable. 8-9 months for a permit yet I can get my security clearance for admission to a classified FBI facility in 4 weeks. prints, background checks and all.
  19. They usually go for a pretty good price. Might be an opportunity to sell an old one if you get a bigger one
  20. Very good friend of mine just got a new job and is moving back east from the west coast. He just put in an offer and had accepted on a 150 acre, old farm in Waverly Ohio. About 25 miles north of the KY boarder. Any one know how the hunting is in that area. He has already extended the invitation and he thinks it will be about an 8 hour drive for me.
  21. Amen, NY. I am taking next week off and will be at camp the whole week. I have my fingers crossed for good weather.
  22. My wife would handle it also. My list will be different in a a few years as my daughter moves out. then I can really evaluate if I want to be somewhere else. hmmmmm. I don't think my wife would buy going to Alaska....perfect...that is my new destination Really though....If I were single, that is where I would be. I'd live in a cardboard box if I could have access to up there year round.
  23. Doe- If you want tho throw one factor in that "quality of life: column to consider.....Many states that have it better than us in the taxes department really sucks in the education department. (Not that I am a fan of NY's but it is better than quite a few). Something to consider with the little ankle biters following you there. If you are really considering it I would list the top 20 things most important to you and your wife. and evaluate. VA used to have free state college for residents...not sure if that is still there or not. I love NY myself and until my daughter is out I wouldn't consider moving.....aside form the liberals....the govt.....the taxes....the potholes....lol
