  1. I am not for laws that impose on any choice as most of you have read in my posts. I do see Doc's point here though. their decission does have a direct impact on others. medical costs. legal costs and even if we passed a law saying no one is liable if the one shot is not in orange and no disability of insurance coverage for them.......what about the mental impact of shooting some yahoo how hunkered down in a bush in full camo. I don't think I could put that aside so easily and move on with my life like nothing happened. It's a tough call.
  2. We had half a truck load on the property lease we picked up too. Crying shame some act like that.
  3. I have a vise mouted on mine and do a lot of work. I bought a couple 2'x2' rubber floor tiles from Mr. Seconds and if I do any banging I just throw them down on it first. They were like $2 a peice. No chips yet after 6 years. I am not sure what they are called but I use those little threaded inserts on the bench......drill through and stick them in from underneath. They have little ears to keep them from turning but I epoxied them as an added measue. the pattern of them all let me but my drill press...bench grinder and vise on the bench...bolt it don from the top and not have to go under or ave them on there when I don't need them. Works great since I only have the 10' bench to do everything.
  4. So I am not putting words in your mouth Punch....you are saying those that oppose AR are inferior ethically....not as intelligent and not as safe since all of them are slinging slugs around? Did I get that correctly from your last post?
  5. I will be requesting DEC's back up studies for the wmu 3 AR regulation....but the science you talk about seems to always come either from an interested party, opinion presented as fact or misrepresented. The broad brush position of some on AR can not be the correct approach. The state is broken into wmu's for a good reason....the situations vary widely across the state. Management of the herd for the betterment of the herd will never be a bad thing...I would support it whole heartidly. I have yet to see empirical data that explains how AR betters the health of the herd. And I mean full and comprehensive data...not a 2% opinion poll pushed off as 70% on favor. We have a great deer population in NY...way better opportunities than 30 years ago when I started....I just need to see any justification to change something that, in my opinion has worked....is based in generations of tradition and takes individual freedom away
  6. I thought I recognized some of those characters from the grocery store in Whitney Point...lol. I do agree....fire arms require being on top of you game...throw in booze and it is a disaster waiting to happen
  7. Punch...don't mix two issues...keeping doe numbers in check have nothing to do withAR.shoot all thw does you have tags for...I do....many do. What many, including myself are questioning here is the AR movement wanting to impose their views on others...I can tell from your extreme comments and reaction talking about no laws that the opponents fears are warranted. AR want it their way and only their way...no reverence to tradition...no consideration of others.....those good times you are mocking....make it sound like a drunken frat party....try them...strapping that big buck on your hood nd driving around showing it off and begging back pats will never measure up. Some hunters judge their success by their name in book others by their joy in their heart...pick one
  8. You are so full of crap thehunter...enough is enough...not one comment I recall seeing said anything about changing your precious area. They have called into question all your inflated facts though....you on the other hand HAVE taken multiple opportunities to express a desire to have this crap in other areas if not all the state. So it is obvious who has n agenda
  9. 60 hours a week Sam....must be a part time farmer...lol. Hard work. I have been there. I think you hit it right on the head...you CHOOSE to pass. I do on many occasions now too. But it is your choice. I think all the opponents of this AR stuff are saying just that. It should be the hunters choice. I have seen some of the AR guys talk about just supporting it in their area...but then argue foe the benefits for across thw state. I am sure there are areas in the state that may benefit and some like John truely speak of his experiences and observations. That I respect. Those spewing talking points and smell of an agenda...I don't trust them any more than politicians. I am very guarded near any folks trying to impose there preference on others.
  10. You are teling me each WMU in the state does not hold big bucks? BS. They are there. Sure there are regions that have a higher tendency for them but they are state wide. there are pics posted form across the state. And this is a personal observation and opinion. The view that folks are in this for the horns is sad. I beleive it is true but I'll take my "scrub" racks that I took during outing with friends and family with the more important memories that go along with them. My second biggest buck I took- a 148- 8 point- I took solo. I was in the woods a total of 15 minutes. I scouted it knew it and took it. and you know for me....the satisfaction of being at hunting camp for a weekend and taking a spike give me better and more lasting memories. It is sad that it has gotten to be about the horns and not the hunt.
  11. and that posted in the liberal media surprises you why...lol
  12. Hard to beleive we can be on the same side of the coin...lol Same here, but I still get my share in. I just think about others that aren't so luck and work their butts off....how about the older crowd that is retired but still are limited because of age or money. Let's face it., especially in shotgun areas but probably in most cases Gun killed deer...the majority are probably taken inside 75 yards. the whole find time to shoot BS from you, NY Antler, doesn't hold water. How much practice is required to make sure your gun is still on and functioning correctly to make a responsible clean kill at those ranges. We are not talking about 300 yard shots at elk here. the bow is a different story and I have had years that I was out of town working and not able to practice...knwo what...didn't bow hunt that year. I pulled out my muzzleloader and rifle and hit the north woods until south opened. Steve hit it on the head and it is all about choice and the QDM BS won't hold water with the majority of NY hunters. Preaching the benefits to the HERD.....I don't see it. Buck to doe ratio in the areas I hunt...not an issue. I am not saying some areas may not benefit from some of these techniques but to paint the entire state with that brush in pushing and agenda
  13. My lease with the same folks he leases from runs $18 /acre each year. I would bet that lease is around 1.600. 3 year leases. yours to post and use all year. They are a timber company so really big rule is DON"T TOUCH THE TREES...lol
  14. I can't take it....I gotta chime in as much as I tried to resist. The AR guys talking about no big buck around...BS...and I don't care what region you are in. They are there! Everwhere! What they want is a guarantee. Them mouthing off that the opponents to AR are killers and they are the HUNTERS...again BS. If they were all that good they would be finding and getting those bucks no matter where they were. They just want to walk out and have a south Texas rach style hunt without haveing to pay for it. And to include the income from NR licenses as even a consideration in any management style maks me want to puke. If you want to talk finances of NY let's talk about all these welfare gimmicks....bet a few of these boys wouldn't want that included as a finance concern. Seems to me a lot of these proponents with all this time to spend in the woods waiting on the BIG one might want to try working for a living. A lot hunters have limited time and base their satisfaction of a season on mre than the size of some bone. Entitlement...go figure....mature...immature...big horns or none....it ISN"T what this is all about...or at least shouldn't be. "Benifiting the herd"....If I have to hear that one more time....what they are saying when those words slime off their keyboard is "benefiting them". You can tell they are all about them...it is obvious. the comment to reduce gun season or eliminate it just proves it. No consideration to folks that can't bowhunt or don't have the time to practice and feel irresponsible walking into the field like that. He is a solution that I beleive would satisfy everyone involved....it would give them the Iowa , South Texas ranch stye hunting they want and so desire....and it give the resto of us the opportunity to make our own free choices......MOVE THERE!!! all parties will be happy then
  15. Eddie....I am a frim beleiver in "you gotta KNOW and TRUST the guys you are with". an I think that holds in any situation involving risk. Heck, I won't do any kind of hunting with guys I at least can't get a floavor for their attitudes. quite a few guys I have only gone with once....if you know what I mean
  16. Solon---where u been?...We do the same now...or should I say I do....now a days it is more like me still hunting circles and pushing the deer to Dad and my Uncle....darn I should have had a boy!!!!
  17. I usually trim my shooting lanes in pairs. it depends on the set up but 2 lanes at noon...2 lanes at 3...2 at 6...and 2 at 9....I hunt very thick cover so it is usual to have one make it through the first of the pair....but i am ready when they get to the second.
  18. Hate to keep singing the praises of it but Craig's list. I have built 2 and used kitchen counter tops. drill easily and cuts to size with a fine toothed circular saw. oil and grease spill clean up well and best part they were in the free section. just went and picked them up.....and the have backspashes too. I have seen 2 listed in Rochester this week.
  19. I have participated in drives since I first got into hunting. It has been 4 or 5 years since we have had enough guys to do it well. If done correctly they can be very productive and safe. I have been involved in smal groups---3-4 watchers and 2-3 Drivers and we used it in a setting that was thick as hell. On my uncles land he had 3 sets of pines and 3 large Cedar swamps. It worked great. I have also been invloved on large scale drives there was a group I hunted with when I lived in Albany and they hunted North of Sacandaga. there were 25-30 guys in their hunting party. we drove entire mountains on that opening weekend. That is all they do,,,,never sit. We took 12 bucks and 2 bear that weekend. It really looked like the old 50's photos at the hunting camp when you looked at the meat pole. In both groups every thing revolved around safety. the larger group you had to unchamber your gun unless you were the lead in the line walking. You got dropped off on watch and didn't move until they came and got you. Drivers always in line with an occassional "hoot" to know where everyone was. But they really handled them more like a big still hunting exercize. slow and steady. Great times and great memories. I can't think of any deer of the top of my head that got wounded and lost. sure some were tracked but whit the approach we used they usually weren't on mach 3 when they came out. More ofteen than not the big boys tried to slip back through the drivers and we started leaving guys at the start of the drives. they usually got the good bucks. Botoom line.....let's face it...There are richard noggins in this sport regardless of the hunting style., just don't judge all by actions of a few.
  20. understandable during this 50 page ping pong match...lol
