If you want to target them and know they are in the area I have a tip for you. You are allowed 1-1/2 oz of attractant for bear hunting. Take a soup can with the label off. put a coat hanger or tie wire through two hole you put in it....like a small 5 gallon bucket arrangement. In the area you want to hunt that day........put the leagal ammount of honey in it. Take a propane torch and heat the honey up in the can until it foams....turns black and smokes.....sit back and wait. works best with a gentle breeze and pick you spot so the breeze carries the sicky sweet odor into suspect bear cover. Worked like a charm for me in Ontario.

So do bears really like turnips?......

this time of year they will eat anything they can get their mouths on. the higher the fat content or sugar content the better. -
LOL...I made a similiar mistake once on my car seats....almost ended up in a ball down by the brake pedal when I hit them.

Something like this would work....dump the brush hog and york rake and get a back blade....between the back blade and loader...NO snow will be too bad for you and in darn short order. http://utica.craigslist.org/grd/1977581476.html

ONly problem I have seen with ATV plows.....you have to push it back far enough with anticipation of future snow. if it maelts and gets had you will now way have the strength in the atv to move it back. I have been looking for a compact tractor and have been scouring Craig's list. I have see 2/8/9 N tractors ...some with loaders for around 2500. a back blade would do well for you too because you can get one to push or pull. I love a 4x4 subcompact with a loader and 3 point hitch.....cheapest so far was 5,000. one word of warning......snow blower...even if you get a WIDE walk behind. untill it freezes you do run the rish of popping a shear key if you pick up a large stone.

Antler Restrictions - What are your thoughts?
Culvercreek hunt club replied to TheHunter's topic in Deer Hunting
I have no idea how old all the folks are that are posting on this. from my personal experience I shot my first at 17....a spike....and pretty much put anything on the ground with a legal horn until I was probably 30. The area I hunted at the time needed 2 on a doe permit (old system) and if you got one every other year you were VERY lucky. so taking a deer was mostly bucks if you wanted one. I got that out of my system and became more selective. My choice. It felt pretty good letting that first one walk. with all the permits now a days it is much easier to get a deer than it used to be (in most areas of the state...sorry to most of our NZ brothers). I remember reading a thread on her about the evolution of the hunter through stages. I can't help but think that AR might rob a young hunter of that experience...being able to grow through all the steps. On the outside looking in at this I guess it isn't that much different than a catch and release section of a river....or a lake with a slot limit....or even a minimum size to keep a fish. I guess I am just getting old and love the way I was able to grow up and have the experience I have had hunting. I just hate to see things change that might jepordize it for my younger relatives. Maybe this would make it better....I don't know....and I am not sure the powers to be really do either....that is my hesitency... I hope I can get down there next week to inquire about the studies- 1885 replies

Cabin for sale
Culvercreek hunt club replied to tstrange's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
very nice cabin -
Nice area down there. Good luck with selling it. I hope you have decent access. I am only about a half hour form you if that but we are a mile off the hard road on a logging ROW. I think the one we built we will have to burn if we ever decide to drop the lease...lol. No getting that out of there. I started out with a panel system so I could take it down if I had to...but then said the hell with it and got the nail gun out ;D

their will to survive amazes me all with every encounter.

Talked with the farmer that plants the land I hunt in Monroe....won't be taking the beans for 2-3 more weeks. Has to wait for the leaves to all drop. since they turned yellow deer trafic is down but they are still using it. they are taking all the beans and corn on the block as we speak. Hope to get one good week out of the place. and he planted 20 acres or rye 2 weeks ago so they will be hitting that all bow and gun

I understand 100% your position on this Doc. But...and there always is one...lol. Have you ever seen any numbers on shooting accidents vs the number hurt in treestand falls? I am just wondering because I have to imagine the incident rate for treestand accidents has to be higher than accidental shootings. And like I said in my previous post the $$$ associated with that would be up there pretty good, based on my experience in construction accidents -
Has to be the smell between the two types. when I took my bow hunter ed course years back the instructor brought in a bunch of acors and had us taste them.....he broke them open and the meaty inside we tasted. It was amazing how much better the taste of the White acorns were. I can understand, given a choice, why deer prefer them

I have them on film...I will have to scan them. I Took a Rochester NY 8 point that dressed 190. the 12 point that I use for my pic on here was in full rut....23" around his neck under his chin where it buldged out. he dressed out at 205. That was an Adirondak buck. that drag killed me. I gutted him and had to drag him 25' to the logging road b4 we could lift him onto the tailgate...lol. He ran the perfect direction!

All of mine are ladder stands now. I usually leave them up but release teh tension on the ratchets at the end of the season. I don't like to distub the tree growth and put extra stress on the straps. When I used hang ons-----b4 my slip----I use to take those down... Seats are an excelelnt point. I wish I had taken some of mine off. 2 of my ladder stands have hammock seats and they are a pain to take off and even adjust, so I leave them....but the squirrels do have fun with them

I will be starting my 30th season this year. I have missed my share and as may have stated here, are they all misses....who knows. I exhaust every option after a shot, to follow up that deer as long as possible. I have seem in snow deer hit and not bleed for over a hundred yards. And in fresh powder the blood drop can fall right through the snow. I have never lost a deer with a gun...again ...that I know of. With my bow...took me 4 years to get an arrow in one and I lost him .....for 2 days anyway. by the time I found him the 'yotes had done a pretty bad job on him. I still tagged it so I could have the rack( all 4 points of it...lol)....first bow kill and all. Other than that one I have not lost a bow kill. I came close to losing 2 deer the year I went to mechanical broadheads. High tree stand and they did not pass through at 20 yards. It is hard to follow a deer with a high entry hole and no exit. Luckily it was a wet area a tracking was easy. no blood until I was about 20 yards away from where they had fallen. I hung up the mechanicals and have never used them again. fly great but no penetration and I shoot a pretty fast bow @70#.

I think the issue is....where do you draw the line. How far are they willing to take it. Treestans are far more dangerous to hunt from than from the ground. injuries from falls associated with a treestand effect others in the same way as those shot in full camo during gun season. I don't want to sound morbid but maybe the treestand effect general society more. the injusries that occur from falls probably have a higher social impact because they are often injuries not deaths. Insurance costs from those are probably more....as well as disability and rehab costs. I wear it during gun...my choice. I just am asking where do we draw the line? -
I have seen struck deer too the last few weeks. I know it is too early for an pre rutting but I think it has to do with th bachelor groups breaking up . I have noticed on the land I hunt....the groups are broken up and if I see more than one buck they are almost identical to each other. I think the little guys are looking for their own range.

I have been looking for a subcompact tractor for the camp.....I opened this one ad in the Rochester section under Barter.......the guys has nice pics of the tractor...but also of 2 deer on a salt block and corn pile...think DEC would investigate that one? http://rochester.craigslist.org/bar/1975084787.html
-
Do you guys think thee is a value to have a seperate classified section on here for no hunting items. Just to give the members a shot at stuff first?
-
Economics 101-----if you don't want to raise the price.......best wat to increase profit is cut cost.....set premiums based on the amout of payout for the deer collisions and them get rid of more deer to decrease teh incident rate
-
What did you guys think of the old system....I grew up in an area with low DMP numbers....but we use to at least get one every other year...never went 2,3,4 years like some of the horror stories I hear
