  1. Tug congradulation on taking the challenge of bow hunting. Caution: Bow Hunting May Become Addictive! You may not need a middle finger any way. First thing to do to get the right set up is finding your draw length. This may vary from brand to brand and you may be a 28 inch draw for a Martin and a 27.5 with the Hoyt. Fitting of the bow is crucial for accuracy. Do not worry about speed. All the bows out today have plenty and speed is a luxury. Accuracy is everything and can only be acheived with a properly fitted bow. This is the best advice I can give. Find a good shop in your area. Take a look at as many bows as you can. Go to the range and speak to other archers about their equipment. Read everything. Magazines, web sites, and product reviews. Decide if you want top of the line fancy, basic and functional or something inbetween. Good luck with the proccess and enjoy. Phil
  2. It is sad that a criminal from a foriegn country has more rights than a citizen. It is sad a Politician will only make a law against an object used in a crime, rather then a person who commits the crime.
  3. Welcome to Long Island. In October the seasonal access permit will allow you to park at any of the DEC managed lands parking areas for hunters until the Ridge check Station. When the Ridge staion opens you will need to check in to get a daily access permit. The station opens about 45 minutes before sunrise to le big game hunters out and then will let the small gamers go out. You can get a permit up until 2:00 or 2:30 I can't remember. There is also the state parks and county parks wich are adifferent process. You will need to contact the state and county parks departments for more information. Here is a link for details. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/40414.html
  4. Hot and dry I think will be the weather this summer. Should produce a lot of acorns.
  5. I still Don't understand why the archery class is seperate from theregular class. In most states there is only one course and it covers everything. I took a class in Hawaii and it included endangered and protected species. It seems to me that the hunting course could include all hunting topics and save on the paper work.
  6. I will never under stand idiots.
  7. This was a deal the democrats made with the insurance companies. They benefit greatly and there is no responsibility apon the federal government. If I don not get insurance will that make me a criminal? When I go to jail wont I get free medical care?
  8. NBC did a lousy job with their investigations as each incident they reported on had issues with firearm safety. The nineteen year old who was shot in the leg failed to unload his shotgun and the leaned it against his vehical ( the type of vehical was not stated in the report.). This is a major safety violation as a car will move and shake when you open the doors and put stuff into it. He was shot in the upper thigh, how? If he leaned the gun against the wheel well and it fell to the ground, how did the barrel line up with his upper thigh. This was not explained. He was done hunting and should have unloaded the shotgun first. In my oppinion there is more to this story and it is not cut and dry. How old was the shotgun he was using? It was stated it had been in the family for a while. What was the condition of the trigger system? The incident occured in 1976, what year was the gun manufactured? In older firearms the metalurgy was not what it is today and the steels were softer and wore down quicker. Was this a case of a worn out shotgun that needed repair or retirement? The second case of the duck hunter in the boat. He did not sue because he did not have a case. He stated he was in a boat traveling when a wave caused his shotgun to fall from its perch on the seat in front of him. Safety is again the issue here. It is unsafe and illeagal in some states to ride in a vehical or vessal whith a loaded firearm. He had his pinky and ring finger shot off. In my home testing sitting on the couch with the gun resting on the coffee table we could not duplicate a situation where a shotgun whith a 24 inch barrel would fall causing your hand to slip over the barrel. Again they did not show the boat or how he was situated or how th gun fell causing the accident. Also it was not varified that the safety was on. I am certain there was other equipment in the boat and it is possible if the safety was off that the trigger could have hit something. here is to many questions here to get a clear answer. In the third case the man mudered his wife oops by accident. The holes in this story are so big a first year law student could make this case. First the man goes on a weekend trip where he did some target shooting. He then comes home to his family of wich he has 3 young daughters. He goes to clean his gun and is going to blow oil down his barrel hith an air compressor. The wife walks into the garage and the gur discharges when it is bumped while resting on a work bench. First rule of firearms is to never leave a firearm loaded. When yo are done shooting you unload it. It is unsafe and illeagal in most states to travel in a vehical with a loade firearm. Now to the big holes. A good father of 3 young girls would never risk their lives by bringing a loaded firearm into the home. So was he a good father or an imbacile. When cleaning a firearm first check it to ensure it is unloaded. He obviously never heard of this due to the fact that he was about to blow oil down the barrel with a bullet in the way. An air compressor with the right nosel could produce sufficient force to set the triger off. There was no varification as to the position of the safety. The state of the firearm should have been in the report but this was not shown in the story. It was stated that the firearm was not tested for any defects. Most police departments test all firearms functions when prossessing a murder case. If his defence was an accidental discharge of the gun it would have been the focus of the investigation. The reporter did not show any court documents or police reports stating as to why the firearm was not checked for defects. Why? Could it have been because the gun was checked and nothing wrong was found? I am certain the police investigation looked for a motive and most likely found one as the man was convicted. The man is looking to get out of prison and NBC is facilitating the release of a murderer. There is far more to this story and we can talk about it for a long time but again NBC did not give full details surounding the case. Lets not talk about the engineer guy. He has made claims against a lot of firearms companies stating their arms are unsafe. We are not certain if he is atigun or just trying to sell his patents. In the article he never presented the actual problem in a scientific way nor did he show the solution. If he is really conserned about peoples safety, why does he not produce a replacement trigger group and sell it as an after market part. Shoddy reporting is what most of these news shows are about. A few bits of information and to few detials to make you think the way they want you to think. This is mind controll 101 and how the Nazi's and Communist's took over coutries. In all these incidencess there was not definitive proof of there being a problem with the triggers. I have not been convinced. My own testing has not duplicated the problem and I would say that the condition of the arms in question may be more of a factor.
  9. Look at the Savage Modle 11 BTH. Look under the Hunter series. http://savagearms.com/firearms/models/
  10. I would suggest contacting the Dec to see if they can recommend a company. If not you could check with lumber yards, Farmers or Developers to see who they use.
  11. I'll set it in my hall outside the bathroom when my brother goes into the shower.
  12. It is early in the season so the woods have a good chance at regrowth. Most animals will leave the area but some young birds and turtles will be lost. last I heard several homes were gone and a building. The National Guard and other helicopters will most likely be put into service tommorrow. Hoping for a quick extiguishing of the blaze and the safety of the firefighters.
  13. Ok. I am at 280 now. Lets see how trim I can get by October.
  14. Doc you are correct. According to the Hunting & Trapping Guide it is unlawful to: Construct or place a permanent structure, blind, stand or platform ( inlcudes placement of nails or other hardware into trees). Leave any peronal property at the time of leaving the area.
  15. Most of us started hunting when we became old enough to do so. We were taken afield by our fathers, uncles and brothers. We did not have great expectations about bagging a trophy buck or even a doe. The thrill was finally being able to go hunting with the men we respected, to join the fraternity of hunters. This was a ritual, a right of passage, being initiated and excepted into the world of men. A special youth season destroys that sacred right. It would only be confusing to a young hunter to imply that they are now old enough to hunt but are still a child and can not hunt with the adults. Raise them to be adults by showing them the respect given to an adult.
  16. Great show. Way better then what is on the networks. Sparticus is also high on my list.
  17. Why are we toying around with a youth hunt? If the age is lowered then they can hunt during the normal season. Why disappoint kids who's fathers can't get the time off to take their kids on the youth hunt. There is nothing that says the kids can't bow hunt. Since most kids are not after a buck and are just wanting to experience hunting this youth hunt can come at the end of the season or after it during the holiday break.
  18. I have tried that stuff twice. Best sleep I ever had.
  19. I had a very good time today as well. Meeting all you guys was great. I shot better then I thought I would have for my first 3D shoot. My scores were: Red Station: 5, 5, 8, 8, 8,5 White: 12, 5, 8, 0, 5, 10 Blue: 8, 5, 10, 5, 8 , 8 Green: 5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 8 Yellow: 8, 10, 5, 10, 12, 8 Total 209 I look foward to doing this again. But I will score my own card as my brother math skills shorted me 16 points. And he is suppose to be the smart one.
