  1. Our deer hang on opening morning. This was by 11:00. Should of had a nice 8 hanging but I rushed the shot and my neighbor took him. Hanging are two doe, button buck and another buck with broken antlers. Friend thought it was a doe. We did tag it as a doe because the 1 antler was 2.75 inches. 1st time hunter and newly weds were together and they shot the button buck!!
  2. Bubba, Thanks for your input that was very well said. I hunt with a small group of 5 people. Maybe as the landowner I will take it upon myself to implement a refresher for all who gun hunt my property. 10 minutes to go over rules at camp and gun safety procedures. I think I will even go a bit further and print up the list and display it on the back door of the cabin. John your right people who took the course years ago need some refresher. Lets face it there are some who take the gun or bow out once a year. They are not familiar with their equipment nor the woods they hunt in. I will never forget this as a kid of 16. I was invited by my friend to hunt opening day with his father and friends. Night before we are all sitting around and one man is talking about shooting everything that moves. The bush moves I shoot and look later. I was actually frighten by his words. The next morning I faked a stomach ache and headed out when it was light, also in the complete other direction of that man. Hey I'm sure guys out there have some basic rules at camp. I would love to hear the ones that are beyond the basics that you use. Just a thought maybe we can agree on a list and publish it as its own thread to be shared by all. If it saves one accident from happening it would be worth it.
  3. Oh man that sounds sweet! Your lucky this weather isn't a day ahead of you, 19 degrees on Sunday night. I have to hand it to you, your a really good Dad! PS my folks live right down the road in baiting hollow if you need a warm bed!!! lol
  4. So we have had a few threads on hunter safety. A hunter died this year from being shot by his good friend. I took the safety course a long time ago and have only heard recently from my niece and a friend what the course is all about. My niece said they taught more survival skills in her class than anything else. My friend is in the military and said it was a complete bore. Now there were things that were useful to him but the amount of time in class and what was learned was really a waste of time. I have been thinking and I believe Doc brought this up about really showing what these firearms are capable of doing. Examples to make your stomach turn. Maybe more emphasis on game identification in certain situations. Wearing of BO at all tmes. I was riding home tonight on the LIRR and they had a poster showing a crushed car by a train at a crossing gate. Wait at the gate is what it said. Kind of the same thing here in the woods, identify first, and there is no good by! I don't know how these courses are run these days, Bubba can chime in here, but maybe a new approach is needed. Just a thought.......
  5. Good luck Zem! Love to see picks of the deer taken at camp.
  6. What he said. BTW last Sunday I had a tree fall 50 feet from me. I was on the ground and it was a big one! Be carefull out there.
  7. If your happy thats all that counts!
  8. Is he mounting it? Hope that hide was in a cooler? Great deer!!!
  9. I was looking at the video frame by frame it looks like the deer was hit in the spine area. Now I have heard that an impact in that area can put a deer out but after a while they come to and will run off. This is not breaking the spine, of course.
  10. Just and FYI-I got this from another site. I would of had a finishing round in it. One thing I aways do is stay out of the deers sight when its down and still alive. Approach from behind and shoot it in the neck.
  11. Get out and hunt. Use bleats and buck growls it will bring them in. Scrapes are still being used in 8P.
  12. Give me a break, they are two guys who stand by their convictions.
  13. Nobody got owned here. Those animals are all trophies in Hunter's eyes. Hunter you shouldn't have posted that PM in my opinion. It's available for a reason.
  14. Honestly I come from Long Island and had a cabin on roscoe. It got too crowded For me. Stuff like this happened so I sold the place and bought In the finger lakes. Way too far for weekend warriors I just have To put up with the jerks from Rochester! Lol
  15. Real nice buck, congratulations to the hunters! You also should be congratulated on keeping tabs on this giant and sharing it with us!
  16. 8P all the deer were using the scrapes over the weekend. I read an article about a trickle rut in place this year. I think the scrapes stay active for a couple more weeks.
  17. IJust trying to get some facts straight here Bubba, I'msmart enough to figure out the rest.
  18. Grow is this the big 9 that was shot??
