Worlds Largest Army!
hunter replied to Mr VJP's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
I saw a tv show where the owner of Dillion reloading had a private plane or jet with a licensed GE mini gun which I think is a full auto machine gun or grenade launcher mounted to the aircraft. I also remember years ago when Joan Rivers was moving back to NYC to host a tv show her first stop was NYPD headquarters where she recieved training and a carry permit in the same day. Try that if you're a truck driver or nurse. While I do think the 2nd ammendment was intended to allow us to be able to defend against army strength opponents, I would concede there might be need for some structure. But fast foward to where we are now. Even after passing training courses and background checks many of us are issued restricted permits that render them useless. Some locales refuse to issue CCW permits except for bussiness or work and they are restricted for those purposes. But if you're a celebrity or rich no problem. -
Congrats to both of you. Fine job!

Worlds Largest Army!

I once read an article where the author said he supported the right to own any gun that could be towed behind your truck. I thought it was funny but could see his point as well. -
Biz-R-O, can you bring the wolf back to ny? When I was in canada about ten years ago the outfitter offered me wolf license but when he asked what state I was from he told me I couldn't bring a wolf back with me even though they had too many and wanted them shot. And of course I saw a nice black one but no bear.

Good point fantail. I'll keep it mobile.

Barrel protector for ML
hunter replied to fasteddie's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
Last year I bought a new gun with a scope and it came with the flip up lens protectors that you can shoot through. I completely forgot about them but when a deer trotted by I made the shot righht through them. They are great and won't cost you a deer. -
Yeah! Just bought a camp in Gilbertsville and I can't get to it. It wasn't plowed all year so under the 18" snow is ice and we are getting more now. So much for the trout opener too. Maybe it will be clear for Turkey.

A fire pit is on my list now too. Just got a camp and the last guy was using a freestanding steel fireplace like 70s era for a fire pit. I wanted to build a stone circle but may go with the square cinder block now that I have seen Fantail's. Want to build a couple of benches too. Maybe just double up some blocks and attach 2x8s. Any ideas or pics?

Isn't that LBJ's camper? lol

When you mention Davis it should be noted for the uninitiated the incredible mounts he has in Sloatsburg and the great range at the other store in Goshen I think. I am not involved with the store but I just wanted to mention it to guys who have never been there, it's worth a trip.

Steve, I don't want this to turn ugly but I just want to suggest it may have been "entrapment" and exagerrated. Last you say they should not get caught mocking the law. I disagree, they can't get caught breaking the law but mocking a law you don't agree with is your right. I think telling someone a shotgun barrel is supposed to 16" or longer to be legal is just relaying facts. If someone cuts it shorter to make a sale then it is a crime. I have no use for these type of weapons but I believe this is harassment because even if found innocent these men will have to pay high legal fees and that's what I feel is the real motive.

Hey guys, I don't know how many of you saw the news regarding a sting operation in Nassau County involving undercover investigators videoing owners explaining what would make an AR 15 illegal and then arresting five men for selling the dreaded assault rifle. At her press conference the DA went so far as to say these assault rifles were being put in the hands of children.??? Legal sales with proper computer checks are being labeled as putting assault rifles in the hands of kids. Really? There is no real crime here that we have to demonize honest FFL dealers. I know most of these guys and consider some friends and I can tell you one is a retired cop and another has a brother who is a cop and a father who is a retired cop who help at the store. Most of them employ cops as workers also. These guys are as honest and legit as any. One victim is a sponsor here South Shore Sportsman in Merrick, the others are TNT gunnery in Seaford and Floral Park, Colliseum Guns in Uniondale and Hunter Sports in Massapequa. Please visit these victims of a PC hoax and spend a little money or donate to their legal defense fund. I know I will.

First off, thanks to Wooly for bringing up a great subject. I am one of the foolish who does not carry any first aid gear when I hunt. More important I should at least carry some aspirin in case of heart attack which means any tightness or pain take an aspirin and call for help if you have service. I helped save my wife's life when she had a heart attack. She was only 43 at the time so we should all be prepared especially with the strain of dragging deer. I will definitely have a first aid kit in my rig tommorow and a pocket one with aspirin to take in the field. Again thanks Wooly, I think you saved some lives.

Ah, the days of tent camping. I used to do alot of tent camping for the fun of it. I have camped from Tiorati plateau in Harriman to the Moose River Recreation area in the Adks. I preferred primitive camping compared to the crowded campsites I find in most Campgrounds. After years of camping-hunting trips I felt that the camping part was taken too much time and effort away from hunting. I also found myself trying to get back to camp before dark so I could get a fire and dinner going before it got dark and I knew I needed to change my methods so I could hunt until dark. I also became less reluctant to get wet while in the field knowing I could take a hot shower and sleep in a warm room either motel or lodge. Like many of you guys I have gotten a little too old to tent camp anymore, but they are some sweet memories.

Just got my hands on the 30-30 Marlin
hunter replied to Robinson446's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I love Marlin lever guns. My first rifle was a .35 Marlin and now have one in 30-30. Also have a .41 mag Marlin which is awesome. I understand the .35 ammo is more expensive so you're probably better off with the 30-30. Good luck. -
Just wanted to mention heavy fleece. I have a pair of wool from Johnson's in Vermont, they're great but cost around $100 and same or more for shirt jacket but I use my heavy fleece pants more often plus the fleece have zippers on bottoms to put on with boots on in case I carry them in and need them later. Cost around $20 a couple of years ago when I got them

Yeah, I would shoot it. I think it's a pretty good deer and since it meets AR if you care about that why wouldn't you shhot it. Besides I believe they call it a slick six because it didn't grow brow tines and I heard on TV will stay a six. Not sure. Not an expert, just what I saw on TV explaining why they would consider one like that a management buck and wouldn't give it more time.

I agree with all your thoughts and will be more careful from now on.

I was in my blind at 5:30 opening day and saw nothing till 10:30 when a buck comes along at a trot and I get my 20 Ga up and shoot as soon as I worked the slide I hear a shoot and another hunter comes out and says I hit it. I said let me see if I hit it at which point some one in his party yells it's still thrashing and the hunter says don't shoot and bang he does shoot. Now I'm a guest and I'm trying to be a good sport so I said if you shot it last it's your deer let me just see where I hit it. Well. long story short I hit midway on my side with an exit wound at the opposite front leg and he grazed the back hip on the opposite side because unbeknown to me we were facing each other. I thought we had an agreement not to shoot in my direction and he was on the other side of the field I was told he would be. This shook me up because we were in each other's line of fire. Since the other guy neck shot it last I still did not dispute the deer which BTW was an eight pointer. Now when they hang the deer the story starts to go he shot it and I grazed it WTF I never argued my right to the deer due to the late and maybe unnecessary neck shot which may have been done when the graze was noticed before I got to the deer. When I claimed credit for my shot I was immediately challenged how do you know? I answered we were on opposite sides as were our wounds and the other guy took "credit" for the hip shot which turned out to be only a graze but they kept the deer. Hope your opener was better than mine. I consider myself lucky not to have gotten shot and will never trust my safety to someone else's judgement as you can be in danger and never know it.

Anyone know where ATV trails are especially in Central NY but I'd be interested in anywhere in the state? Even ones that require joining a club. Thanks

Slug Guns - What do you shoot? What works best?
hunter replied to ELMER J. FUDD's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
It's not that hard to reload a single shot as I have done it with my NEF 12 ga although the deer didn't bolt it ran a few yards and stopped but I was already reloaded. I was using the stock band with slug holders at the time. I moved up to a Remington 870 with rifled canterlivered barrel. It came with a scope and extra smooth bore gold bead barrel. I got mine in 20 ga and love it. I usually hunt rifle zones but my club is in a shotgun zone and my land has close neighbors so I only use shotgun there by choice. If I only hunted shotgun I would look at the Savage bolt action slug gun. Bolts are supposed to be the most accurate -
Good luck Enduro lookin good. Are you working from plans?
