  1. I tnk AR is going to take its toll too, not on the kids raised upstate who have time to hunt but, the kids downstate that have to be driven 3 hours on weekends and have school during the week. They shoot whatever for two years on youth hunt and then its 3-points or better and no doe permits like in 3A. That and they can't put their stupid I-Phones down for 30 seconds.
  2. Shame but out of my nieces and nephews, 7 of them, only one hunts and only 2 days a yer if at all. They were all exposed to it but they'd rather watch baseball & football. I think losing the shooting clubs in high school also has something to do with it.
  3. A Sportsman, you are describing my club too. In the 60's and 70's there would be 12 guys for opening day and Tuesday with about 6 or 7 hunting thru the following Sunday. Then come back every weekend. Now they hunt Sat & Sun, come back home Monday and then go back up for a few days of muzzleloader. A few bow hunting a couple of days in the early season. Chalk that up to AR. No farmland, no feed, posters all over, food plots all over pulling deer away, so getting a chance at any real horns are slim. Does are the draw now.
  4. I heard earlier this week that the NYS State Police just said they were ready for 1/15/14 to commence the registration of ammo purchases
  5. what I'm hearing downstate is no one wants to sell ammo period because it takes 20 minutes per sale for the registration work.
  6. Not on the run, I would have taken a shot earlier too.
  7. Kudos to you for finding a wife like that. She's a keeper for sure. Bless her patient heart
  8. Well, second chat with him, the cable didn't break. He torqued the bow so far on the draw that the loop slipped. To me that's real odd. Knowing him I suspect that the setup hasn't been touched in ten years. I always waxed and replaced my recurve strings, the compounds always spooked me on teh first few test draws, all those moving parts and cables.

    Indoors

When I was a kid we shot .22, air rifles and bows in the basement. My father was a machinist and made a metal trap for the rifles. NYPD detective lived next door, he'd come over every so often.
  10. Me and my wife had a pot roast contest. She did beef her way, I did venison in my cast iron roast pot. Didn't tell anyone. The venison disappeared. Two days later we spilled the story. Now every time I make a roast I'm asked if its that disgusting venison. Fine, more for me. My vegan niece makes an exception for fresh back straps but "Won't eat anything with a face"
  11. One year I shot my deer and was walking to push for the other guys. I's walking with a shotgun and walked right up on a doe browsing. She was only 50' away from me and never fretted while I walked up, stopped to watch her and then walked on. Another year I did the same, walked up on a spike bedded with a couple of does. They looked at me, he mounted one doe and only moved when I tried to push the spike to my brother. Any other time I would have seen tails 100 yearsd in front of me. They do seem to have a sixth sense, can't be true but it seems so.
  12. Guy in my club went out on the last day of bow seaon. When he got out of his truck he dry drew the bow to limber up and the connection to the loop let go. Had to go to the ER, just an eye srcatch luckily. Its worth it to take your bow to a shop and have it inspected and tuned. You only get one set of eyes.
  13. My own opinion which is worth zip. That hits me in the ethics spot. Change the season to outsmart them. Fair chase, let them have their time. I have a "safety zone" around my brother's house. Won't shoot a deer in the zone, passed on a nice doe this year becasue she was browsing there. Just my own way of thinking.
  14. My family used to joke about this and still do. Go out small game hunting and have bucks run right into us. Go and get a bow or a gun and you see rabbits, squirrels and grouse. Where I hunt in 9H we have squirrels by the bushel. Day before opener I go out with a .22 and don't see any. My father went to East Nassau squirrel hunting and ran into grouse after grouse. He & I went back their the next weekend and didn't flush a bird. They put the latest alerts on the forest wire service, shotguns headed to Dusenberry Hill Road. Head for cover. News at 11.
  15. Law " If you don't LIVE with your bow daily and religiously you need to rethink it." That's why I gave them to a friend and quit. I didn't have the time or space in the city to shoot every day & knew sooner or later I was going to gut shoot one. That's when I switched to a compound. Then I screwed my shoulder and was out entirely. I may get a stick bow and test the shoulder again at targets. Will never hunt with a bow gain, I still don't have the time or space to pratice correctly. "Man's gotta know his limitations"
  16. The teak knife blocks are edge killers. Wiping the edge on that sand impregnated teak will surely dull a blade. I made a cutting board for my boat in teak. What a mistake. It looked primo but cut bait or a fish and you were left with one dull piece of steel.
  17. I watch it in spurts On Demand when I have watched everything else. Had my wife watching it last week and when she saw them at dinner and the Nativity pagent, she was hooked.
  18. yeah and they are not recording you calls or computer information either. Bubba so true, with tracking cookies, every time you put in a search for a gun or go to Cabelas, Bass Pro, Gander Mountain...sure no one is tracking that.
  19. From what I have been told, after the background check is approved, the information is deleted. The NSA confirmed that the database they maintain which is the size of Texas, has no gun owner information stored in it. Just holds photos of fuzzy little kittens.
  20. A&E just brought him back to make money. Technically yes but, the full treatment is they found out that the people that make DD the highest watched cable show wouldn't stand for their pandering to the left BS, that they had to protect their franchise because of the merchandizing and that the other cable networks smelled blood in the water and would have paid A&E's price to move that show to their network. That show is too big for anyone to lose. How many shows merchandize out of restaurants like Cracker Barrel? Like it or not, its a cultural phenomenon that happens every so often, like Cabbage Patch Dolls
  21. I took 3 shots with a recurve 35 years ago. First dropped right under a chest shot. Second time, string hit my arm and the arrow just fell off the rest. Third try I was following a walking deer and a let go, WHACK, I shot myself a nice ash tree!! I loved my recurves. Never did get a deer with them but that was some challenge.
  22. Gonna be a lot of hissy fits tonight
  23. Haven't figured out this quote thing yet. VJP, I'm in the same boat. I can't remember the last pres candidate I voted for. Maybe Clinton
