Youth Hunt, don't know if anyone else had this
Suilleabhain replied to Suilleabhain's topic in General Chit Chat
Thanks Phade It wasn't DEC it was State Troopers, the guys that will enforce your Safe Act and set up the database for your ammo purchase background check that starts 1/1/14. -
My brother's grandson shot a doe. They dressed it and started dragging when his grandson heard a chopper. It came over the top of the mountain on our property in a bee line and circled right over them as they dragged. They stopped and waved at teh chopper and kept dragging. The chopper stayed over them until they got back to the house and my brother expected either a trooper car or the chopper to land by the house. Nothing happened. Sounds like the new cell towers they put up around town triangulate on the shot and they were checking youth hunters to be sure no one was poaching.

My grand nephew took a doe with a Model 70 Win carbine in 30-06 with 125 gr Remington managed recoil load. Deer dropped in its tracks.

30-06 and Managed Recoil Ammunition. Kick is like a 30-30. My grand-nephew is using that today @ 14 y/o.

They had that on an old Star Trek re-run, damn stuff attracted some varmints called Tribbles. Best to be careful with that stuff.

I've been off the radar for a while, don't know if this came up. NYS DECALS has some system issues. I registered for myMarine Free License a while ago and never got it. Went online yesterday and it said it didn't have my information. Phoned and got my Marine registry but I think I may have to get reset with a new I.D. #. My I.d. #/Driver's license/Zip code combo has been lost.

This does what it says, the last pic is just about 70', its not heat senser, the motion light went on on the patio. All I did at 70' was move my arm to see whether it would pick that motion up. 1st pic is my chihuahua and then the chi with my fox terrier. Everything I hoped for.

Just got a Moultrie D-333. Its out back taking demo pics. Set up was easy, we'll see how good it does.

I was on an NJ site once and they talked about tree stands on state land. More to the point, they talked about missing tree stands. They disappear faster than you can replace them. Only thing that moves faster than tree stands was trail cams

Oh I was waiting for the Big O debate to re-start

This was a WWII officers quarters hut in Canarsie, Bklyn where the Canarsie Market is. Disassembled and trucked up to 3A in 1950

So far in 3A, two years now and no doe permits for years before. it's no change. We aren't seeing more deer to start with, the same couple of 6pts and no real increase in spikes and 4pts. Place is just a dead zone lately. Then again, there is no farming or orchards locally anymore, just trailers with the local working guys, some summer people. The fields are just going back to nature. I think there is a major lack of natural feed. If anything, the does being taken by everyone in archery and muzzleloader is probably hurting more than helping. Some guys I know don't rifle hunt anymore after going empty for a few years in a row. Back when I was a kid, we had no doe permits for years, then the 4-men to 1 permit and we took a lot of legal bucks, but there was farming then.

Anyone hear about DEC asking for land access so they can survey the turkey population and determine why it is falling? Wanted to see what the particulars are. Last time DEC asked us about doing a deer assessment and forestry review they wanted in return to open the land to the public for 5 years.

I shot recurves for years and long bows as a kid. Its a lot more enjoyable than compounds. I'm looking for a used hickory long bow again just for sh*ts and giggles. I have a friend that hunts L.I. with a long bow. He does well, his shots are 15 to 25 feet not yards.

thurmos help
Suilleabhain replied to heatmizzer's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
Stanley's are hit and miss, I have heard a lot of this story. I fortunately have a good one. I have steel Thermos wide-mouth that's good too and the best I ever had were old Thermos and Alladin glass bottles. They really held the heat. Rather than one large bottle think about using two small ones. Opening and closing a big one loses heat and use soup instead of coffee or tea, as said the milk defeats the purpose. Chicken or beef bullion cubes in boiling water in a bottle stays red hot. I had tomato rice soup late this season and that heated up the body a lot more than coffee. Also, put boiling water in it and seal it the night before, then put more hot water in while you are cooking the soup. All makes a difference -
30-06 grain choice??
Suilleabhain replied to HuntOrBeHunted's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I always used the Remington 180gr CoreLokt in my 06 and 300 Savage. More because they were the standard round in my gun shops than anything else. They always worked fine so I had no reason to change.. -
I'll be setting my line in teh garage shortly

guy in my club took a remote control truck and mounted a target on it to practice moving shots. Worked great. I don't see why you couldn't get a used one, camo the truck and put a strutting gobler mounted to it so it moves. Truck he used was like 18" long. Weight it down so its not top heavy and you don't want speed, just to move about a little.

Last year I put up Hawthorn and blueberry. This year some more hawthorn go in and I started wild grape and had some acorns sprout roots. Deer and bear ate all the turnips and apples by December. Our plot tends to be wet, we have to dig a drainage ditch an put a pipe in to get the water off it. Too much of that swamp grass taking over.
