westchester is awful since only a few public spots & lots of traffic. i go just to be out and its close but keep expectations LOW.. they seem to stay mostly nocturnal there or get pushed so deep you have to walk thru few hundred yards of 20ft pricker bushes towards the southern ends..yes, frustrating

kensico area i meant to say..
-
Chef, have you ever had luck there? been goin there on and off for years and still havent seen much on that land. they def know once hunters start coming.
-
welcome. One of my favorite walmarts in Oneonta

even for bow with no other buildings around i guess better to be safe and not do it. unfortunately passing up some deer and turkey
-
It is illegal to discharge a firearm or bow: so that the load or arrow passes over any part of a public highway, within 500 feet of any school, playground, or an occupied factory or church, within 500 feet of a dwelling, farm building or structure in occupation or use unless you own it, lease it, are an immediate member of the family, an employee, or have the owner's consent. Does this mean if you are an employee, it is ok? called DEC and they had no clue.. great

what are your experiences trying to get permission to bow hunt corporate park areas? tough to get someone in charge to actually ask them but some places seem like there are opportunities..hunting time would be on weeknds when there arent employees around. but i guess if the land is owned by a business it is technically trespassing

with all the talk about recoil and weight of the rifle, what really is the over under poundage on gun weight that makes it "heavy" vs "light" ? may 7 or 8 pounds.. so a scoped 9+ lb is considered heavy and a scoped 6.5 lb synthetic rifle is light?

not knocked when walking in the dark. just trying to get to my spot slowly, safely and quietly. the release goes as soon as i close the car door though.
-
hamptons & hunting.. hilarious. wont catch us out there

you walking in 2+ miles in and out each day ? or camping out? creeping in 2 miles is goin take long time. You cant bait in NY so you maybe plan your whole days path in a circular path since you have the topo maps. dont expect see many bears but give it try, cant win if you dont play!

try to be in the stand at least about 2 before sunrise, thats about 5 am now. http://www.sunrisesunset.com/calendar.asp?comb_city_info=New%20York,%20New%20York;74.006;40.7144;-5;1&want_mphase=1&month=10&year=2012&time_type=0

it wont be strictly for deer, Kind of a lower all around caliber easy to target shoot and game hunting anything on the small -mid size animal. so 243 or 7-08 seem to be in the ballpark
-
I am looking for a rifle caliber to complement my 30.06 on the smaller end. I want something for range shooting 100 & 200yrds but also for hunting nothing larger than a deer and that has has lower recoil and easy to find affordable ammo, so I am leaning towards a .243 ..thoughts?

-
An Attaboy and hope it brings you good luck this year

i use long piece of dental floss( unused of course) hanging in few spots for the wind.
-
out for a midday walk, good to see
-
on public land, what is the consensus on how far your man made blind should be away from others who have also used tree, limbs, branches to build their own spot ? the hot spots seem to be just a few so I can see a bunch of hunters facing each other at 50yd distances !

New to Hunting looking for some new hunting buddies!
mac replied to AaronBlaine's topic in Introductions
Both Sterling and Stewart get very busy since they are closer to those hunters from the boroughs and long island. A liitle too busy for some and most dont seem to follow rules of safety especially during rifle season. The DEC website is helpful for finding other public WMU'S, parks, forests upstate. West Point may be a nice option.
