  1. I see. That makes sense to me now. .I get turned off by these "outdoor" tv shows that turn hunting into an out right team competition. This is not Football.
  2. First-Light... when it comes to Bears I sit on the fence too. I have no desire to shoot one. However, as long as it is not a garbage dump bear, bear meat can be nothing short of superb. My kid brother makes the best "Teddy Burgers" in the world! And Bear Pot Roast is hard to beat!
  3. Elmo.. I know how you feel. I never kill anything that is not intended for the table. As far as Hunting Bobcats, Coyotes, etc... I don't hunt or shoot them, I feel they have their rightful place. And by the way, it is a biological fact.. the more coyotes you kill, the greater their litter sizes are the next time. Many predators respond to hunting pressue by only increasing their own population. Coyote case in point, whether you hunt them, trap them or poison their dens they always bounce right back - they are here to stay. Knowing this I just let them be. And considering the majority of what they eat includes small mammals, they also keep the Deer Tick population in check. But, on the other hand, even with Predators sound game management is needed, for many reasons. We all have seen already, when Coyotes lose their fear of man, serious problems occur. To me hunting never was and never can be a "competitve" sport. If you're hunting to compete against other hunters I feel sorry for you. If you think you are "competing" against the animals, you are mistaken. I'll just leave it at that.
  4. I've decided to keep the gun for now - Moderators Please Delete.
  5. I'm in Dutchess County - Eastern New York. Cabelas sells this Gun for $199.99, not sure what Gander Mtn has... but $150 is as low as I'll go. And yes, it has the quick release screw in-screw out breech plug.
  6. Reduced $150.00 as Low as I will go. This is a steal for a New Muzzleloader.
  7. CVA® Wolf Blued/Black .50-Caliber Rifle BREAK ACTION REMOVAL BREECH PLUG. RELIABLE 209 IGNITION NEW. NEVER BEEN FIRED. I WON THIS GUN AT LAST YEARS TURKEY SHOOT. I JUST DO NOT HAVE ANY INTERST IN IT NORMALLY SELLS FOR $200.00 ** ASKING $165.00 Buyer will need to make arrangements with me to Pick Up.
  8. I agree. I only go there as a last resort. Gander Mountain like the other one, use to be the best place to shop for quality and price - WHEN THEY WERE MAIL ORDER CATALOGS! However, they have over-extended themselves and to make up for the horrendous overhead in employees, real estate and inventory. They are now pricier than 5th Avenue. Too Bad. It's a shame.
  9. Not to Rain on the Parade.... But there is NO YOUTH HUNT - Quoting from another source - Maybe this can shed a little insight into this discussion: As of this past Tuesday July 11, DEC filed the Notice of Adoption with the Department of State to amend several deer hunting regulations for the 2012 Big Game seasons. Included in the changes were 12 separate actions pertaining to deer hunting, including provisions for a three day Youth Big Game Firearms Hunt on Columbus Day weekend. These regulations were effective upon the Notice of Adoption appearing in the NYS Register yesterday. See: http://www.dos.ny.go.../pdfs/rules.pdf Scroll down to page 6 to see the DEC section. This is the annual process that DEC goes through to amend sporting regulations, and accordingly provides for a 3 day special youth deer hunting opportunity. Here’s where it gets sticky and clouded: During the past legislative session, the Assembly ENCON Committee, chaired by Assemblyman Sweeney, considered Assembly Bill (A9682) which would have expanded crossbow use to other big game seasons. They did not pass that specific bill and instead passed Assembly A10583 which simply extends the limited current cross bow use for another two years, however, it also contains new specific language that prevents DEC from establishing regulations allowing any crossbow or firearm use for deer hunting during the early archery season. This bill passed both the Senate and the Assembly in their mad rush to end the session. Accordingly, the bill now goes to the Governor for his signature and becomes law when that happens. So we currently have an officially adopted Regulation which allows for a Youth Archery Season and also a proposed law which specifically contradicts the use of firearms to take deer during the early archery season. Law trumps regulation. Complicating the matter is that the Legislature is now out of session and the rules for Executive approval and signing change. When in session, the Governor has 10 working days to sign the bill, veto the bill or if he takes no action it becomes law after the 10 days. When they are out of session, he is under no time constraints to do any thing with the bill and he can just let it sit there indefinitely. By doing nothing with it, the bill essentially becomes a “pocket veto” (dead). Th conundrum we’re having now is that nobody knows what the Governor will do with this bill. As of this writing we have a Youth Deer Hunt scheduled for Columbus Day weekend, as provided for by 6NYCRR regulations adopted yesterday. However, if the Governor signs the bill, then that takes precedence and trumps the regulations and there is no Youth Hunt. Your guess is as good as mine as to what will happen. Hope this gives a clearer picture of where we stand. I gotta find my “I Love NY” bumper sticker. (I also need a beer, too !)
  10. I have to agree. Getting good form practicing with 60 LBS is not a great way to start. You are way over-bowed coming from a 60 LB Compound. 45# maybe 50# would have been much better. The problem with being over bowed is your form will suffer, leading to bad habits that should not be part of proper form in the first place. And as DOC said, with a traditional bow in effect you're exercising your upper body muscles, particularly your shoulder and back muscles. So you have to be careful. The question is - Can you comfortably shoot an NFAA 300 Round with your new 60# Recurve and neither your shots or your shoulders deteriorate? Anyway, Best of Luck,. Enjoy your new bow. But I would look for a 45# "Beater" bow on @bay and practice with that first. Then work your way up.
  11. Well.. as a past president/director of a couple of clubs, and current secretary for our County Federation of Fish & Game Clubs. Here's a question for you.... If you join a club, what are YOU willing to contribute? Pay it forward... these clubs kept hunting, fishing and shooting sports alive. This is about making a contribution to the next generation coming up.
  12. I was teaching a Hunter Ed Course a couple of years ago and one of the students parents was a Local Agway Feed Store Manager, and when we were talking about Ethics, he mentioned that during the week before deer season all of the Deer Feed they Supply literally goes flying off the shelves. So I said, "feeding deer in New York is illegal, so why then do you sell the stuff"? He replied, "because there are several deer farms in the county". I said, "yeah right!". Like everything else.... if a quick (and many times -- lucrative) buck can be made - business is business and ethics can go to blazes. .
  13. Lucky Girl! One of the reasons why I prefer bowhunting over gun hunting in suburban areas. This sort of thing should not happen. And I would have to agree, I don;t think shortening the distance for bow hunting is advisable or warranted. As past President of a local gun club, several years ago, I had to go the the home of an individual who is the neighbor of one of our land owners that allows us to post their property for hunting, anyway, the neighbor was IRATE when he found a arrow with broadhead sticking out of the siding of his house. And who could blame him. We then posted much of the area around the perimeter of huntable land as a restricted safety zone.
  14. hahaha... thanks for the Chuckle! Good One!
  15. My sincere condolences. Sounds like a good man and had a good life.
  16. I think the only "audience" that listens to Nugent are those that WANT to hear him. With the NRA zealots he has a captive audience. With EVERYONE else they just shrug it off as - look at where it's coming from... an IDIOT! Nugent doesn't represent the NRA, Nugent doesn't represent his Family, Nugent doesn't represent Veterans! Nugent represents Nugent! All of his actions prove demonstrate just that. As a veteran all I can say is. It takes a hell of a lot of nerve to wrap yourself in the American Flag screaming Hoo ahh!! After eating sausage and deffecating in your own pants for two weeks, so you can get yourself eliminated from the Draft.. The only conviction or principle this nut job has is looking out for Numeral Uno.
  17. I'd rather Nugent not say anything at all. His past and his present reveal the very questionable character he really is. By his actions and his motor mouth he gives sportsman, particularly hunters and gun owners a big black eye. Nugent isn't promoting gun rights, Nugent is promoting Nugent. Listening to Nugent on Ethics and Behavior would be like going to a sex therapy seminar given by Nuns.
  18. I hunt by myself. And Like it that way. Less hassle. We are all different, and have different perceptions of what hunting is about. After sharing a camp with a drunk for a week, I swore never again.
  19. Happy Easter to Everyone. God Bless.
  20. Here Here... not a great day, raining, not much shooting today! Too much time on our hands! I do agree.. all of these arguments are a matter of perspective. Too bad we can't all get along, we have nothing to fear from the Anti's as long as we fight among ourselves. Not good.
  21. The same old stale argument.. when the first gun goes off deer go Nocturnal. Having been an avid runner for many years, I use to get up at 4:30 every morning and run 7 miles a day, an old habit from my Infantry days. Anyway, I used to run by an apple orchard close the road that had motion detection lights and when I ran by, the outside lights would go on, and I would see a couple of bucks I mean bucks with massive racks with 12 and 14 points, and I guarantee you, no hunter ever saw these two brutes in daylight, ever! NYB would have you believe after the the first gun goes of in the deer woods, the deer have all packed their bags and left for new unknown territory. Fact is deer don't vacate they just know their home range more intimately than hunters do. And for the most part after few days of the regular gun season, deer revert back to their daily routine anyway. Anyone willing to walk more than a 1/4 mile from the road, will most likely do far better than the average hunter that never ventures beyond the first 200 yards or so. And yes, I am extremely serious bowhunter, I use traditional equipment and make most of it myself. I do my homework, hunt bow only areas at times, and after the gun season is in full swing, have to get a little further back, that in itself opens up new territory and new opportunities for success. I am just not as selfish as some. I would take more delight in seeing a 12 year old come out of the woods with his first buck, than myself with anything at all. It's a sport. It's called Hunting. Not Killing. What baffles me is these same arguments the NYB Crowd throws out today, is largely the same argument and battles our Archery leaders fought in the 40's and 50's to get an archery season. With the Advent of the Compound Bow we had the Bear Archery advertisements "Become a Two Season Hunter". if not for the Compound, the Archery Season would have a lot less pressure than it gets today. My point is the introduction Crossbow or a Youth Hunt in the "Pristine" and "Unpressured" woods is not a valid argument. Besides it is human presence in thw woods that Alerts deer more than anything else. The deers biggest asset is his nose. And come October 15 one month before the rut, every Nimod in the woods is doused with Tink's 69 or some other snake oil. The deer know, and will be on the alert it's hunting season!
  22. I had suffered with it for a couple of years. And yes, it is psychological. And more importantly about confidence and form. As a traditional shooter I practice just at the bale several times week and all I think about is my form. That way, whether it be 3D, Stumping or Hunting the only thing I am thinking about is hitting the spot. And that's it. Archery is 90% Mental if you think you are going to miss than more likely than not you will miss, because you already told yourself you are going too. There is an excellent book out there that deals with the Psychological and Mental game of Archery called, "Understanding Winning Archery" by (Olympic Coach) Al Henderson. It is a highly recommdeAd book.
