  1. Think you should have asked those questions before you got the rod. The rod should tell you the lb test range and lure weight range recommended. Some people use as low as 8lb test on their surf rods and as high as 300lb braid. If you are plugging with a St Croix, Lami, or a GLoomis, I'd probably recommend 20lb -30lb braid or 10-15lb mono. If you are soaking bait, I'd go with 30-50lb braid or 20-40lb mono. When the blues are in, go with a steel leader and a size 6/0 hook. Bunker is a favorite as well as clams for stripers. Larger hooks for larger fish. Smaller hooks will get you some more hookups.
  2. Saw someone with some saltwater rods on the i87 northbound strapped to his bike this morning.
  3. Don't know if gulls are legal to harvest, but they taste horrible. That's a fact!
  4. Morning doves have quite the meat. When taken by air guns, you risk very little waste and can often get 6-8 in a short amount of time.
  5. Look, each person has a certain amount they wish to spend on a certain item or sport. If Joseph wishes to keep his costs down, so be it. I remember a thread I made regarding saving an Easton arrow a buddy of mine blew up. He has a longer draw than I do and I was able to salvage the arrow by cutting the damaged part off. It's a tiny bit shorter than my draw, but shoots fine. My accuracy has not been able to tell the difference between that arrow and that of my set of 12 CX I purchased new. To each their own as long as they ain't gut shooting deer.
  6. Why do you park in the driveway and drive on the parkway?
  7. Nope. Weight is not everything in the equation, speed and cross sectional profile of the projectile also plays a huge role. The .17 HMR is a more accurate gun wen I comes to long ranger vs the WMR.
  8. For my Yum worms for $1 a pack! Many rapalas for under $2, it was great!
  9. I recall getting my lures at clearance plus 1/2 off at Dicks one year.
  10. I didn't get the pleasure of being around long before Bubba got fed up with this site and vowed to call it quits. But he definitely is a man of his words and haven't seen him back since. He's one I wouldn't mind going back on his words though.
  11. A qualified pro shop can suggest the arrow spines and weight you need after they measure you. I'd stick with a poundage that you are comfortable in shooting and not the max you'd like to shoot, like Elmo said.
  12. Never have I heard broad heads fly better than field tips.
  13. I suppose with the proper permissions and or permits, one can poison a grey with lead? But that's assuming it was a grey at all. But back to the question. I think the temperature has to do with the speed at which it sets in and sets out. In deer, I've seen it set in after 3-4 hrs time. Squirrels, sometimes as fast as 45 minutes.

    Striped Bass

City island doesn't really have many shore spots, and at the few spots, is normally not productive for lures and too rocky for 8&bait. One of these days, I'll have to make a visit to these places in LI.

B., the herring you get from November through March are Atlantic herring, different from Bluebacks. They look very similar, but was told they are different and come in at different times. I believe 2-3 different species of herring run up the Hudson to spawn, one of them being the Alewife. Herring is said to be on the decline, and new regulations are forbidding the catch of some species and certain waters. I'd love to get into some blues and stripers, but alas, hard to do from shore as I don't know any productive spots.

I do believe we are talking about two different species of herring here. The winter herring is Atlantic herring.
  17. Sure sounds like there's a few Bloomberg's in this thread with all the comments on controlling sugary foods etc. The solution is simple really, do away with free healthcare and the public doesn't have to bare any burden. If you choose to buy private insurance, be prepared to pay the premiums and not bitch about how you MIGHT be paying for someone else's health issues, because YOU might just be that someone else. Who am I kidding, we're too soft for that type of radical change, let's just tax everyone more, it goes over better and better PR.
  18. Boo for us downstaters that will have to pay Internet tax!
  19. But you took a pic anyway, right?

    B. you should grab a 50lb weight from a weightlifter and test your scale. It may very well be off.
  21. So you're just a hypocrite that keeps coming back for more abuse.
  22. Not disagreeing with you. Your point well taken.
