Tommy, sending you PM now.

If you've got the cash and dont mind spending it, by all means hire a pro to show you the ropes and put you on deer. Personally, I find it extra rewarding when I put my own time and work into my hunts. I also make an active effort to meeting people and becoming friends with them. I've make a few here on huntingNY, and would honestly it's something money can't buy. I'm in it for the comrodory more than the meat itself. Btw, if you're looking to get into hunting and meeting other hunters, feel free to contact me. I'm not much of a resource, but would be happy to keep you company while the squirrels evade us as they always do.

Welcome! Be aware that Nassau is a no hunting county except for waterfowl. If you are into rifles, I'd suggest you hunt upstate, or in LI with an airgun.

I'll take em Tommy. Meet you in Westchester?

Good luck!

Cool! Haven't seen any black ones there, but have seen a few in a bow area. Any deer over there at Cali Hill?

Push To Include Big Bore Airguns For Big Game In New York?

Going with the idea of most on the forum, you'll need a big bore for squirrels, just in case. For the minority of us that actually appreciates shot placement, a .177 or .22 is enough to take squirrel. The .22 will get you a little more range while keeping the round sub-sonic and quiet. A 50 yard shot with an airgun with an accuracy of a 1/2 dollar would require something of quality, and priced around $150-400. PCP's are excellent for long range shots, but are top dollar. 3" groupings is not hard with my .25 Marauder at 100 yards. -
No movement for us either. Did hear some twigs snapping as I approached some downed pines.

Unlike powder burners, airguns do not kill by hydroloc shock, but rather wound channel. Airguns are subsonic, especially the big bore ones. That is under 1100 fps, and in most cases, under 800 fps. If shooting straight with no angle, we're talking a drop of 24" within the first 100 yards or so. Pretty much the distance of a 22LR but the wound channel of a muzzle loader. I'd that's not safe, I don't know what is. -

Very rarely, do airgun pellets expand, so no, there will not be a 2 inch any hole. Secondly, if a pellet were to hit someone by accident, probably will be in excess of 300 yards away. By that time, the pellet will not be lethal, but an arrow at any yardage is. In regards to ricochet, arrows and pellets both ricochet, so I don't see it being any less safe. -
North America is kinda a huge fence.

G&R Cop, not sure if it was you I corrected last time or not, but I'd appreciate the correct spelling of my name, it's really not that hard( its my SN). I'm by far the "authority" on anything, just an enthusiast. Airguns are considered safer than a bow because they are not capable of cutting 2" holes in people should an accidental discharge to occur(with the exception of this airgun bow). Airguns are less dangerous than rifles because their effective range is much shorter than that of powder burners. I think it's safe to say that shooting accidents are generally not a result of one person intentionally shooting another, but rather careless handling of the weapon and not making sure of ones target and beyond. I believe an airgun helps with both these problems. This is of course not a replacement to common sense, but unfortunately, some are incapable of such a thing and I'd feel safer if such person was using an airgun rather than rifle in the woods. -
Don't see why you can't do both. There's been fox on the ice, why not yotes?

Lake Waneta now has a house right by the lake, making it a bit tougher with the 500' rule.

Most states won't consider it a firearm, since it's still a modified airgun. In anywhere outside of NYC, airguns are legal. -
Not sure what it's classified as. Most likely airgun. If it is, I don't see why it can't be used currently for small game.
-
What say you? Should it be allowed for big game in NY?

If bows can take big game, so should airguns. and here's why. -
Ive put more time shooting at the range than I have hunting. Same goes for bow. Have probably put a combined 200-300 hours at the ranges this year alone.

The 22LR is actually an inferior round compared to some of the larger bore airguns. I wouldn't use a 22 even if it was legal either. -
I too was out in Westchester today with a little fog. Not a big deal since I was still able to see in excess of 100 yards. Sat from 2:30 till 5 and saw not a thing. Struck out 2 days in a row now without seeing a single deer.

I'm part of the seeing none while hunting. But I am seeing them gang up on the roads.

Limit the power to be under a certain FPE like in Europe and also qualify only quiet airguns to be allowed in urban areas. Of course this would only work if the 500' rule was reduced to allow for them. They certainly carry less danger than a bow at closer ranges. -
I should have taken a picture and some samples to have you fellas a taste, seems some are pretty eager. The droppings was high in count, probably 20+ droppings in the pile. It's also fresh, because it was not there few days prior. I've seen black droppings from over several weeks old, and does not turn brown. The droppings looks like deer, but has a horse dropping color and consistency. This was also close to a primary scrape. Saw another pile at a different location but was smaller pellets. Could their diet be changing to a more dry, lower protein diet?

I've been seeing more and more of these brown, hay-like droppings. Anyone know if this is normal, and what story it may tell?
