Just a little venting...
shawnhu replied to Sogaard's topic in Gun and Hunting Laws and Politics Discussions
Ouch. -
Buckshot is legal in NJ for DDP permits. Let's not take things for granted and state the facts.

That was childish and uncalled for. We're here to discuss and debate and hopefully learn something. I have no idea why you are here at all.

I would think that there are a lot of incidents that plans for mass shootings have been foiled by good citizens, and in some cases by an armed citizen. Unfortunately, not many of these cases will ever make it into the news media as it is not deemed news worthy. And that is the real problem that America faces, people thriving on doom and gloom in the media, because good news are not as popular amongst the masses as bad news. We're also so caught up in knowing about everyone else's lives and when the next sex scandal with which celebrity that we neglect our own children. In my opinion, if at least one incident of a plot to mass murder people was foiled by a good citizen that used his weapon, that's many lives saved because of the right to carry.

Duck hunting north shore of western Long Island
shawnhu replied to digthesig's topic in Waterfowl Hunting
Lots of duck hunting clubs out in LI, I know of one in Flannigan, Ducks Unlimited I think. Could try getting in contact with them and see if they could assist. -
150 yards... I'm guessing it wasn't a double lung, but rather a spine shot?

Not sure if this is true or false, but I'd expect a 3000$ laptop to hold a charge long enough to last several hours before needing a charge from the car. Even then, the engine does not need to be running to keep an accessory on. A car battery will keep a dying laptop charged for many hours AND start a vehicle with no problems. I know folks would like to believe that those sworn to serve and protect is doing the right thing all the time, but if it walks like a duck....

I agree. Only people can control another dangerous offender, not laws.

So stricter security and training for gun operators, no banning. Got it.

Do you also believe in world peace and hugging the trees? Reality of it is if we don't protect ourselves, I know you won't be doing it for me. I know damn sure the cops around here won't either. Do you also believe in Santa?

Ex-FBI profiler's take on the Newtown massacre
shawnhu replied to Deerthug's topic in General Chit Chat
Those that don't learn from history is bound to repeat it. There is still much to do to learn from this tragedy. -
I would reckon that the more fuel the vehicle uses, the easier it is to convince his boss that he was "working". I see this in public school systems as well, where it's summer time and the heat is blasting. When confronted with the high temps, the answer was "we need to use more heat so we can have a budget for heat next year". The system is broken, mostly at the top level.

And what I'm saying is that in most cases, especially in the woods, and in NYS, one would likely never encounter the variables you describe for a shooter to doubt their shots. The biggest variable is the shooter and their ability to confidently place a shot.

Funny, not too long ago I commented on a young hunter's grammar, or lack thereof and how using punctuation could help others understand and help in his search for help. I was warmly welcomed by the anti-grammar nazi police to leave the kid alone and that this is a hunting forum giving the notion it was ok. I'm glad people are pointing out that even in a hunting forum, poor grammar is not excusable when attempting to communicate in an educated fashion.

With due respect Sir, I don't think we are talking about 2-300 yard shots with winds in the 30 mph range to deflect a bullet enough to miss a dinner plate. I'm sure you know that with today's ballistics and speeds of bullets that an extra 50 yards wont make much more than a fraction of an inch's difference in POI. Now that leaves flinching. Nothing can be said about that but more range time and/or man down and use a weapon that one is not afraid of pulling the trigger on. I'm here to learn and share as much as the next guy, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

I believe that any hunter that has to see blood before knowing that they hit their target needs to get back to the range and spend some time pinching some paper.

No one likes to see these events in the news, with that said, there wouldn't be a necessity to defend gun rights if there was never an offensive against them. Think about that and maybe do some WTF's to those starting the gun control threads instead. RIP little angels, you're in a much better place than the rest of us, that's for sure.

Good luck finding her. Wonder how many deer are lost to solid broadside shots each year.

If the government decides to ban guns for citizens, Law enforcement should also not be allowed to carry, just like in England. Let them enforce the criminals with their sticks and whistles. We are a nation of checks and balances, and if our guns are stripped from us, who then will keep the military and government in check? The anti's in this forum probably never took US history, of how this nation came to be. We are here because we fought for our freedom, with guns. I'm not into high capacity mags, or assault rifles. But I would never think to ban them because I feel they are not the issue here. They've been used in mass murders, but so has bombs and planes and cars, we didn't ban those, did we? The US as a whole is going through a phase, a phase of depression, a phase of lack in education and of family morals. Top this with a phase to disarm and strip away the right for individuals to protect themselves, and this is the result. None of these kids or teachers were able to defend themselves. There's a lot of folks out there that are willing to put their lives on the line to protect others, if they were only allowed to do so by carrying.

Fly-fisherman turned Hunter-new to hunting and to NY
shawnhu replied to Dr Ignominious Death's topic in Introductions
How's it going Doc? Using an exclamation mark is better than no punctuation at all; seems like no one in the states know what they are anymore. In regards to hunting deer with a shotgun or a rifle, it all depends on where you are hunting in terms of county. The general trend is that counties are going towards of rifles. If you were to get a shotgun for waterfowl, upland birds etc, I'd recommend a 12 gauge. Most on here will tell you different opinions on the rifle necessary to take deer, but legally, any centerfire is suffice.
