  1. I should be good for Saturday. Let's start a list of who's available. I'm in.
  2. Most guys that start with airguns will go for either a pimp or break barrel. Difference between them is power versus accuracy. It's much cheaper to get and accurate gun from a pump than it is from a break barrel. For hunting purposes, sometimes accuracy is much more important than power, especially for small game like squirrels. I would prefer the pimp over the break barrel for a first airgun.
  3. Sept 30 might be cutting it too close to bowhunting opener. I'm in, also have a new toy to try out on the critters. .25 cal Benjamin spitting out 40 fpe at the muzzle. A little overkill, maybe. How's this weekend?
  4. The Hornady ammo indeed has very accurate readings when shot through my Chrony.
  5. The bipod you have on there is a Leapers/UTG bipod. It'll allow you to use the swivel for mounting the bipod as well as for a sling. You plan on replacing the thumb hole stock?
  6. Very nice guns there. I also see that you mounted an airgun bipod to your 17HMR. If you're ever in NY, I'd be more than happy to go on an airgun hunt with you.
  7. Not every bullet will have the same BC, and the scope height will also play a role in POI and zero. Also some food for thought. The general reference to the speed and POI is a good baseline though.
  8. NYC cops - quantity over quality, period.
  9. As a general rule, airguns are allowed anywhere in the state of NY where shotguns are allowed. If it is stated that hunting is by bow only, then airguns are not allowed. Westchester and Long Island are both bow hunting only, for deer. Small game is still allowed in Westchester with shotgun and airgun in some areas. Long Island is famous for the waterfowl hunting, so I can't imagine it not being able to hunt small game with a shotgun. Just be sure the land you hunt allows for shotguns/airguns. By definition, and air rifle is not a rifle at all, since it does not use a cartridge. The definition of a rifle is to use a cartridge and a rifled barrel. Good luck with the Nitro Venom, it's a great shooter for me up to 50 yards.
  10. Rjw, great thing you guys are doing teaching kids to tie their own flies. I'll be sure to save some tails of them for you if I get any this year.
  11. I frequent mongaup pond and find it a good campground, but hunting is not allowed. Saw a fawn come into our site a few weeks ago.
  12. No mentor here to get me started. I think the first time hunting was when I was 7. Someone made a wooden gun for me and was loaded by rubber bands. I was to help lower the dragonfly population by shooting them dead. I was pretty good at it too. From that point on, I knew hunting was a tool to control populations, and not just for game and trophies. It wasn't until a couple years ago that I turned my passion for paintball and airguns into hunting. Now I take pride in hunting for pests and the occasional game to take home.
  13. Because they are not considered trophies.
  14. Hmm. Pretty close to home. Hope everyone is ok.
  15. I would imagine that a fox is as large as I would go with a magnum springer in .177. I've heard stories of raccoons being a tough animal with the .177, even well placed shots.
  16. That's the Rogue, in .357. Even their .22 cal in 18 grain is very capable.
  17. Adult white tail has been taken by some of the more powerful airguns.
  18. Although rated for 1200 fps, usually much lower than that in reality unless you are using light weight alloy pellets in the 5 grain weight range Most hunting pellets will be 8 grains and up to retain enough energy down range to cause a lethal wound. Since my last post in this thread, I have take a lot of game with my .177, .22 and .25. You would really be surprised what 40 fpe at the muzzle can do.
  19. Interesting idea, but NY is so huge, it'll probably have to be done in sections.
