So I was in Herb Philipsons yesterday and they have some of the NY legal Stags for sale. What really caught my eye was the COLLAPSIBLE, FOLDING STOCK, PISTOL GRIP AR that they had. Reason this baby is legal... It's a pump action from Troy Industries. Looks exactly like an AR takes AR mags and all accessories but is not semi auto getting around king andy's rules. At $1,099.99 its not bad either.

So I see Remington is giving away a Versamax on their facebook page.. but guess what... NY residents are not eligible. WTH... They gave some guy the excuse that its because of what the total value of the prize package is. Whats up with that??

So this weekend i was going to a remote hunting camp with my stepson's boyscout troop. The leader usually gets there ahead of time and gets the fires going and generator gassed up. When he arrived at around 4-4:30 he was unlocking the front door and heard a commotion at the back. He looked around the building and saw a blackbear coming out of the rear door. It stopped and looked at him so he yelled and shot his 44 mag over the bears head to scare it away. There was all sorts of damage inside such as torn down cabinets, what little food or cooking oils were empty, bunks were torn up and the couch inthe back room was torn up, as well as a bunch of Tom Cat mouse killer was eatten and bear crap all over. The next day the leaders son and I decided to follow the tracks and see where they went after he left the camp. After about a 4 mile hike we ended up at another camp back in the woods. At first it didn't look like the bear made in inside until we looked around the corner. The bear actually ripped the 2' planking right off the building to gain entrance. We looked through the windows in the kitchen area and saw the mess he had made in there tearing through a wall to gain access to there as well. We couldn't see into the bunkhouse portion because all the blinds were shut. There were no fresh tracks leading out of the cabin just in so we think it was still in there, however even with sidearms neither one of us wanted to stick our heads in the hole to find out.

I was looking at these at Herb Philipson's. They have them for $549 and right now the ammo is 5.97 a box of 20 Tula with limits of 10. Normally its 9.99 a box. Let us know how it shoots.. -
First deer with the pistol. Ruger Redahawk 44 mag hornady leverevolutions. 30 yards through and through ran 30 yards. I'm pleased with the caliber

We got this guy on camera only once. The neighbor saw him at the end of the season crossing by a pond but didn't get a shot. Good thing is he is still out there!

Virgil, Richfield has some great bucks. Been hunting in the area for about 10 years. the buck in my avatar is from the land we lease there we also took an 8 and a 9pt. Oaks creek is the chanel that the guys have duck blinds on. That is the area I have duck hunted along the lake. What is the exact area you are looking at? Can you get the GIS info or do you have the tax map numbers and I may be able to give you more info.

strange and scariest things while hunting or fishing NY
Yotehntr replied to noodle one's topic in General Chit Chat
4 years ago my uncle and I went to hunt a patch of woods that we knew held turkeys. We walked in together way before light. I sat on the field with my back to the woods and he cut through the woods to the opposite side so we had them covered. As it started to get lighter out and birds started gobbling in the distance I heard footsteps behind me. Figuring it was either my uncle coming to tell me "lets move" or someone else sneaking in I leaned to look around the tree and see who it was. I almost crapped when 30 yards away I see a blackbear coming down the farmers road that links his 2 fields. I freeze not knowing what to do. Remembering my grandfather always said aim for the face if you have to shoot a bear in during turkey season its the best you can do. I tightened my grip on my 1100 and hoped if needed the 3in #4 Remingtons would persuade him to go the other way. My luck he kept right on going down the road and across the field to another patch of woods. The turkeys were not there so when my uncle met up with me we went down the road where the bear came from, after some birds we heard gobbling, and found a dead cow over the bank that he must have been feeding on. Thankfully he was full.... -
Have caught a lot of fish out of there and some whopper walleye. Good perch and some nice largemouth, they usually run a Bass tournament up there every summer. Also is good bullhead at night off the boat launch if you can secure a spot early enough. Have duck hunted it a couple of times on the far end to the right off the launch (not sure N,E,S or W). There are guys that have some blinds in the channel down there and do well. The last time I hunted there we had decoys out, had been shooting, and then had some guy in a bass boat decide he wanted to fish there. Told us he had more rights to the water.. It had gotten slow so we packed up and left anyhow. Also on this end have seen a few deer swimming that channel going back and forth. Not sure where the land is you are looking at but it is a very nice lake and a great spot for recreational use. The only thing is you have to watch out if it floods like it did a few years ago.

land.. He is in my avatar but here is another picture of him from opening morning of the south. I think its from the Big 10 I missed last weekend of bow.. Buck Fever... But a clean miss and good news is the season is over and no one claimed to have gotten him or another we called the freak so they will only be bigger next year!! We never were able to catch the Big 10 on camera but I have also included a picture of the Freak

I found this rub Sunday while walking around. Its only 20 yards from where I shot my 10pt this year and I know it wasn't there before he died. I am thinking this is the bigger 10 that is roaming around up there someplace. He has it rubbed all the way around the entire tree.

After my half day of work and on my way to the lease Saturday my Brother-in-Law calls and says he hit a deer and is trailing it. I got there and helped him find a nice 8pt. There was still plenty of time so I went and sat in the apple scrub where I had planned on even though they had walked through there earlier in the day. I got in to where I have been sitting and saw all the frozen apples turned up in the snow. I sat a while not seeing anything contemplating if I would. Then I looked over my right shoulder into the field behind me and saw a deer coming from the golden rod into the apple scrub about 150 yards away. I got turned and waited hoping whatever it was would come my way and not go the other. Soon a deer appeared I pulled up my pistol and looked it was a little one. I hoped that with it being there it would be like a live decoy and bring others in. It began looking the direction it came from. I kept watching and nothing was coming up over the hill. I looked beyond and another deer came from high out of the upper corn field. Another little one. Then a nice doe popped over the hill where the deer was looking. I put the cross hairs on her but she kept moving. Then an 8pt just like the one my Brother-in-Law killed came in behind her. I watched all 4 of them for about 15 min at 30 yards from me while sitting on the ground. Finally the buck turned to go back and the doe was getting anxious. I put the crosshairs on her but she was staring right at me stomping I was busted. Then she jumped and ran 10 yards I figured she was outta there, but she stopped. I put the crosshairs behind the shoulder and touched it off. After receiving this gun from my wife the same day I propsed to her on Christmas and hunting 4 years with it I finally put a deer under its belt. Complete pass through and she ran about 30 yards and piled up. Ruger Redhawk 7.5" barrel 225gr Hornady Leverevolution.

Saturday morning I sat 50 yards in from my bow stand I had seen many bucks from, but couldn't get shots at because of the pine and spruce bows. I sat along an old logging road with the pines to mt left, swamp to my right and hardwoods at the end of the road. 6:30 I hear a deer running on top of the ridge to my left and I look to see a doe being chased by a grunting buck. The buck was small and through the scope I couldn't see any large antlers silhouetted against the horizon. He chased her down behind me and back up on the same trail about 40 yards away. 7 am I hear another sound on the same trail that the buck chased the doe and see a very nice 8 pointer. At this time I contemplate taking the shot but it is 7 on opening day. I just watch through the scope as he follows the same trail down behind me but does not return. I sit back the way I was originally facing down the old road and get myself situated again when I see what looked like a deer's tail flick in the hardwoods. Pick up my scope and sure enough it is a deer and it has a RACK! I put my scope up to 5 so that I can see better and the deer that was facing down hill to the swamp turns and goes uphill now behind all the pines and spruce. I take my head away fromt he scope thinking man he's gone when i see him come back into view. I look again at him and his rack and decide I'm gonna take him. he is now positioned facing down the hill again and the sweet spot is centered between 2 trees. I put the crosshairs right behind the front shoulder and squeeze while talking to myself to keep calm. Crack! My baby my Winchester mod 70 in .270 barked. The deer humped and ran. I waited for a few minutes texted the wife to tell her I just shot and got up to look. When I got to the spot where I thought he was I saw no blood, but hoof marks where it looked like a deer ran. I followed them for a bit and thought I better go back to the top and check again. 20 yards further than where I thought he was I found blood, followed it for 10 yards and looked ahead there he was. perfect heat shot he did the dead deer run for about 30 yards. This was the 10pt that I had on my game camera and that I have on my work computer desktop so he has been teasing me for the last month looking at me. 10pt 15.5" inside spread and 156 dressed weight 140 yard shot .270 150gr winchester powerpoints.

use the dead grasses that surround the field if there are no corn stalks laying around.

What time will you be in your stand / blind / spot on opening morning?

6am I'll be sitting down -
My .357 always tags along with me. Ammo is cheaper and I can get right close for finishing shots. why waste another rifle round?

So sitting in my stand Sunday morning thinking about how my season had gone. Remembering all the bucks I had seen and the big ones that mocked me at 20yards in front of my stand in the thick brush. I was startled when the buck we call Tan the Ten stepped out of that thick and into a spot I had wanted those big ones to step into all season. This deer we have no pictures of but have seen him making this his 3rd appearance on the property. So as he walked from right to left at 30 yards I slowly stood, brought my bow up, and anchored. I could feel my heart racing when he stopped broadside and looked over his right shoulder. I placed the 30 yard pin behind his shoulder, placed my finger on my release, and began to squeeze. I felt the release let go and watched the arrow fly through the air and........Into the dirt.... Missed to the left in front him by 2 feet.... as I sat back down to nock another arrow he slowly walked back into the woods wondering what had just happened. I too sat in disbelief as my lighted knock showed bright sticking out of the dirt. Everything took about 15-20 seconds too happen and I rushed the shot. I can only figure that I pulled the bow on release being right handed. I can be grateful that I did not put a bad hit on this deer and that he was not spooked so may see him again with the rifle. As for my season it was a good one I let small 3's, 4's, and an 8 go knowing there are some good ones here. I guess I will have to wait until next year to try and kill my first deer with the bow. Looking forward to seeing any of these big guys with the gun cause I am much better with that then the bow...

Aquaseal is the best there is for neoprene waders. I have cut mine many times on beaver cutting while waterfowl hunting. Don't be neat and clean when you are putting it on and make sure its a level surface. I tried to do it nice the first time and it still leaked, the second time I gobbed it on and wasn't level so I have aquaseal runs down the sides of my waders. As for finding the holes.. if you cant find a rip its usually a seam. I have found the leaks by getting in my pool with them on, walking down the boat launch at the canal, or having my wife spray me down in the shower. Note the spot and like I said just gob the aquaseal on and let it do its work.

Thanks Guys! He'll get the pass from us this year and we will check him out on camera next year if someone else doesn't pop him during the gun season.

Corn needs to be cut lower than what it is. They don't like landing in the tall leftovers. Easier to land they might not think twice about just dropping right in without even calling. Thats what they do on our lease barely even circle.

I am not great at determining a deers age on the hoof. Is this deer a young deer (2.5 or less) with good potential or an older deer (2.5+) that will never be anything? He looks good body size but the rack is messed up. If these are bad genes then i will put him on the list for someone to take. I have a picture of him in velvet and then he showed up last week at my stand again. I have not seen him in person.
