Thanks guys... Wooly thats me i was getting harassed pretty good by the others so it was all fun and smiles in the end. I can say that the belly loins are delicious and much better than that shiny yellow plastic...

Hunt.. It was on a drive.. you only have seconds to make a decision in the swamps. If I could have gotten a longer look and saw the antlers he would have gotten a pass. I have let lots of these guys go already this year.

So I have hunted A LOT this year between bow and the firearm season. I wouldn't call myself a trophy hunter because i don't make sure what I shoot is over 3 yrs, 140 class yada yada yada. However I do have a requirement that it be 6 or bigger as goes for our whole group on the property we have in 6S. So as it goes I have let may "little guys" go that were anything from spikes to crotches with guard horns and a bunch of short nosed does, I prefer the grey long faced heavy does if I am to shoot one. Yesterday since we have not seen many deer at all this season I decided to take a walk in the thick swamp where I knew they were hiding. I found a good buck track chasing a doe and got on it trying my best to stalk them. Well my clumsiness and weighing 240 before heavy clothes makes that pretty impossible though I try. I did manage to follow for a while and found where I had jumped them and got em moving again. As I was pulling myself out of a hole in the swamp I saw 5 something run by no shots but texted my brother in law to tell him. I continued on following the buck and doe and came to an area completely littered with tracks and beds. I stopped to rest and look around and saw 12 more through the thick from back down no look at heads to see what they were. I met up with my B-I-L and told him so he said well lets go push the other swamp. we got set up and he started walking. It wasn't long and I heard my Uncle in law shoot. My B-I-L called to say that it was a miss and the does ran back in, and to sit tight. As I was talking to him I see movement through the pines and throw my phone into the snow with him still talking. I see what looks like a decent size deer coming and I pick a hole. Once that deer hit it I let him have one. He goes down then picks his head up and I see what I thought were spikes. Now I'm pissed at myself. Come to find out... if you go by the ring method its a 5pt but if you go by the inch method he's only a 3. So I have been beating myself up for shooting this thing but everyone keeps telling me it meat! I guess they are right I just hate shooting such a small deer and this one could have had potential with what he had for headgear already.

Yes its a Deerfield Carbine 44 mag. I have one as does my brother inherited an older model. Fun shooters.. haven't killed anything with it yet... but makes a nice brush gun.

Got my buck last year with the Winchester 270 and a doe with the 44 mag Ruger Redhawk so this year it will me by JC Higgins 30-06 then my newly acquired marlin 336 30-30 if time and luck permits I'll break out the 1100. Then its a knight .54 cal for muzzle season.

I saw this.... it was November 20th 2011... I had sat down for a night sit at about 2:00. Around 2:15 I hear crashing coming up the creek... through an opening comes a doe with her tongue hanging out and snot pouring out of her... behind her comes a buck! I look but the doe was larger than the buck so I decide to pull on the doe and drop her in her tracks. I begin texting my wife and letting her know that I killed a doe and that the buck ran to her brother I was waiting for the shot. Just as I was about to get up I see the buck come back. I sit to watch him for a bit and start texting my wife letting her know he was back. She tells me "shoot him then you won't have any tags to eat" This year the weather was warm so it kind of made sense. I looked at him while he was still pacing the swamp looking at her. Finally I decided my wife was right and I did not yet have a 5 pointer. So after about 20 mins I decided to take him too. Two deer same day... The rest of the guys never saw anything for the rest of the year so I was happy I decided to take them both. She was HOT and he didn't want to leave... Love kills!! Sorry about the gut pile in the back not the best picture....

Advice - Hunting from tree stand vs on the ground?
Yotehntr replied to jrussell's topic in Deer Hunting
During Bow season its from a treestand when you have to get them in close. As soon as gun opens it all ground sitting. I can see further from the ground and have cleaner shooting lanes from there. -
Winchester Powerpoints 150gr nothing fancy and does the job. Been shooting them for 16yrs with no problems. took the buck in my avatar at 150yrds with them

So am I just looking in the wrong place or are all of you that have been lucky enough to harvest deer not involved in the contest. I haven't seen 1 picture of anyone with a contest sheet. It looked as though just about everyone was signed up in the contest thread. If I am not looking in the right spot please point me in that direction as I would like to see stats of some of these deer that are being taken.

So you don't really know the person. I would meet up with him at some point and get to know them. Meet at a diner in the morning or something and enter the woods together so he can go to his stand and you can keep on going to yours. Set up a form of communication even if it is just a text when one goes in to say hey i'm in here. Find another route around his stand so if he is there first, you have another entry and exit point. Who knows if they are a good person you may actually gain a hunting friend and you guys can share data on deer activity. Or lie and tell him you are seeing huge ones on another piece of the property and hope he moves his stand off the trail! HAHA But seriously I'd talk to him and become friends. You guys are hunting the same piece and sometimes you end up needing help to track or drag a deer.

2014 HuntingNY Whitetail Challenge

Count me in! -
I purchased an Axis in 22-250 for calling coyotes. Shooting the Hornady superformance the thing is a tack driver. I have the bushnell 4-16x40 illuminated scope with the CF500 reticle, basically same as the nikon BDC but lines instead of circles. Haven't had a chance to put it out any further than 100yrds but would not hesitate. Also replaced the spring in the trigger for a crisper pull. Very nice gun for the money if you ask me.

Small food plot success ???
Yotehntr replied to BBDEric's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I put in a small plot near my stand on the 10th. I left my camera up and it captured the whole thing in photo progression if I can turn it to a video I will post it. I was afraid with all the rain we had this week it would be washed away but I was surprised to see the brassica, and clover already coming through. I have even had a few visitors through there. If you look closely in the Larch in the middle is my stand. This camera is about 30 yards away. -
From what I have heard this will be the last year to use any unused prior year deer tags in the "early" (september 27th to sept. 30th) season in the North. Get out and fill the freezers. I won't be able to as i will be taking my wife away for the weekend for our 5th year anniversary. She knows though after we get back its all hunting season!! Thats why I keep her! HAHA

Best Hunting Boots
Yotehntr replied to NYBuckHunter27's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I too have MANY pairs of hunting boots as my wife reminds me when i complain about her shoe fetish. However my go to's are 400gr Rocky's when its dry out, Lacross neoprene when its wet or going through swamps, and back to a pair of big bulky Rocky's when the temps drop. I have a pair of the Thermacell heated insoles and my suggestion is not to waste the money. Mine were give too me or I would not have them. The biggest misconception with them is that they are not meant to warm your feet. They are meant to maintain a temperature. In other words you cannot turn them on when you get cold you need to tun them on when you stop moving. I found it just as easy to purchase the toe or foot warmers from Grabber. -
WOOD... I am not familiar witht the area I went out there with some friends but we were close to the mouth of the lake. We fished out by the rock walls in the morning. We were going to try the lake but there was 7-10' waves so we turned and went back into the river and fished by the Huntley power station to end the day.

Anyone install their own Above Ground Pool?
Yotehntr replied to burmjohn's topic in General Chit Chat
I put mine up about 2 years ago. I did some construction work and the people said I could have the pool and deck for free since they were looking at a bigger one. I just had to take it all down and put it back up. Sounded like a good and cheap idea at the time. Never again will I do it. Pay to have a pool put in may cost more but they are in and out the same day and you are swimming the next. Took me about a month to dig, level, and build everything on nights and weekends. I did use an Elephant pad underneath just to protect from anything that may be sharp. Then this winter the ice blew out the side. I have had 2 people offer me their pools for free I just have to take them down. No way maybe i'll take them for the $40 in scrap i got for my pool. Next summer I will pay to have one put in. -

My wife, the two dogs and I went looking for sheds on my lease Sunday. Found some old skulls and bones but no sheds from this year. However when I found the last skull with its top teeth pointing to the sky I picked it up and had 4in spikes on it. Looks like its from last year. We covered a bunch of trails but have to get back up there. With 300 acres and a bunch of swamp they could be anywhere. I'll see how the turkey hunting goes Thursday if its bad i'll go shed hunt some more.

These shots were 30, 40, and 50yrd shots from a Remington 1100 with a 30" full barrel. I was very impressed with the 3" #4's. Before I wouldn't trust shooting the remingtons out to 40 yards.

I worked with my taxidermist this year to mount my own deer and found there are a lot of factors that come into play here. As heads were dropped off throughout the whole season he would flesh them and then freeze them. After the 1st of the year he ordered his truckload of mounts. As he got ready he would pickle the hides himself to save some time and money as opposed to sending them out to the tannery. There would then be a rotation of pickling hides prepping the mount and mounting the hide taking about 2 days to do so. once the hide is mounted it takes about 3-4 weeks as its drying to keep an eye out for any problems. Finally when everything looks good and dry the painting step comes to touch up spots. So it should take 3-6 months to get one back. I just hung mine up after finishing the painting last thursday. No depending on what other animals the taxidermist has to mount and what kind of other mounts he has to do could push things back further. Deer on the left is my adirondack 10pt from 07 which was the last one that taxidermist did, so he would have more time to travel and hunt and fish himself, and the one on the right is my 10 from this year from the southern zone that I mounted under the watchful eye of my taxidermist.
